2026 ZiPS Projections: Atlanta Braves
For the 22nd consecutive season, the ZiPS projection system is unleashing a full set of prognostications. For more information on the ZiPS projections, please consult this year’s introduction, as well as MLB’s glossary entry. The team order is selected by lot, and the next team up is the Atlanta Braves.
Batters
Remember how 2024 was a major disappointment for the Atlanta Braves? Well, Father Time apparently took umbrage at that description being applied to an 89-win team that at least made the playoffs, and proceeded to have his beer held as he cooked up something really disappointing in his workshop. The Braves finished with a 76-86 record, the team’s worst showing in a season where it was actually considered a viable contender coming into Opening Day since 2008. Now they hope to put things back together with more or less the same core talent.
Just looking at our depth chart, you’d feel pretty good about the Braves, except for a couple things: They look a bit worse at (almost) every position than they did at this time last year, and we’re getting those WAR numbers with quite a lot of the starters projected for at least 600 plate appearances. The first is a problem because a team with slightly better projections just won 76 games, and the second is worrisome because ZiPS is quite meh on Atlanta’s offensive talent once you get past the team’s impressive first-tier players.
The one place where the Braves did get a projection boost is at catcher, with Drake Baldwin a lot more established than he was coming into 2025. The position didn’t disappoint this season, and there’s no reason for particular worry here. Holding steady is Matt Olson, who more than pulled his weight in his fourth consecutive ironman season. His 2025 paled next to 2023’s 54-homer campaign, likely Olson’s high-water mark, but it represented a nice recovery from a down 2024.
Elsewhere, there are questions. Austin Riley missed significant time to injury, and for the third consecutive season, he shed a good chunk of his wRC+. Ronald Acuña Jr. was his usual terrific self when healthy, but after being plagued by Achilles issues, he appears to be running out of parts in his legs that haven’t been injured. Michael Harris II suddenly hit like a Double-A player for months, and though he made up some of the loss with a hot July and August, you have to have questions about a major leaguer who can go a half-season with a .234 on-base percentage. I’m also not sure that Ozzie Albies is even good anymore, which is a major bummer, as he’s now only a couple of years from hitting free agency and otherwise having the opportunity to make up for one of the worst pre-free agency contracts ever signed by a good player.
Help is unlikely to come from the minors. Atlanta has developed an impressive number of position players, but until/unless the 2025 draftees succeed, Baldwin might be the last short-term boost from within for a bit. And while the Braves aren’t cheap in the sense that teams like the Rays or Marlins are, the organization isn’t known for being super aggressive in free agency.
In short: If the Braves get a bit of good fortune for a change, this could be a really good lineup, but there’s a lot that could easily go very wrong.
Pitchers
The problem with the starting lineup’s projections repeats here, especially in the rotation: There are a lot of good projections, but they’re mostly a bit worse than they were last year. Unfortunately, pitchers being pitchers, I have less confidence in the rotation staying healthy than I do the lineup.
I’m certainly hopeful about Chris Sale, whose late-career mini-comeback has put him in plausible Hall of Fame territory, at least for me. On the plus side, his rib cage injury, like the bicycle-aided broken wrist in 2022, wasn’t a recurrence of his prior elbow problems, so I’m cautiously optimistic here. But he’s also going to be 37, an age where decline becomes a serious year-to-year concern for pitchers.
Both ZiPS and I are relatively bullish on Spencer Schwellenbach coming back from the stress fracture in his elbow, even if he has to give back some velocity to take some pressure off things. Reynaldo López’s shoulder showed no structural damage, but baseball’s medical wizards have become adept at fixing elbows quicker than shoulders, so caution is warranted there. I personally have no idea what Spencer Strider is now, as he’s lost a lot of velocity and his ability to get whiffs inside the strike zone is diminished.
The good news is that ZiPS sees Atlanta’s rotation as having better emergency options than the lineup. Bryce Elder and Hurston Waldrep are reasonable fifth starter options, and the computer thinks JR Ritchie and Lucas Braun could fill-in where needed without it being a major disaster.
ZiPS projects the bullpen to be competently average, and while nobody is forecast to be a dominant arm, the numbers don’t start looking worrisome until you get to the sixth or seventh relievers, which is true of most teams this early in the offseason. ZiPS sees Joel Payamps as a decent addition who adds some heft to the ‘pen. I expect a few moves to be made here, though it’s unlikely to be anything that would push Atlanta into being a top tier bullpen.
When you assume that a lot of injuries will inevitably happen, the Braves look like an 84-88 win team (or somewhere thereabouts) depending on who the healthy guys are. That’s better than last year’s finish, but still kind of a disappointment. Uh oh, maybe I should avoid using that word again!

Players are listed with their most recent teams wherever possible. This includes players who are unsigned or have retired, players who will miss 2026 due to injury, and players who were released in 2025. So yes, if you see Joe Schmoe, who quit baseball back in August to form a Ambient Math-Rock Trip-Hop Yacht Metal band that only performs in abandoned malls, he’s still listed here intentionally. ZiPS is assuming a league with an ERA of 4.16.
Hitters are ranked by zWAR, which is to say, WAR values as calculated by me, Dan Szymborski, whose surname is spelled with a z. WAR values might differ slightly from those that appear in the full release of ZiPS. Finally, I will advise anyone against — and might karate chop anyone guilty of — merely adding up WAR totals on a depth chart to produce projected team WAR. It is important to remember that ZiPS is agnostic about playing time, and has no information about, for example, how quickly a team will call up a prospect or what veteran has fallen into disfavor.
As always, incorrect projections are either caused by misinformation, a non-pragmatic reality, or by the skillful sabotage of our friend and former editor. You can, however, still get mad at me on Twitter or on BlueSky. This last is, however, not an actual requirement.
Dan Szymborski is a senior writer for FanGraphs and the developer of the ZiPS projection system. He was a writer for ESPN.com from 2010-2018, a regular guest on a number of radio shows and podcasts, and a voting BBWAA member. He also maintains a terrible Twitter account at @DSzymborski.
Who’s Andrew Jenkins the LHP? Link goes to a Tigers 1B. Can’t find the P anywhere
I think it should be Aaron Bummer? 32 year old LHP who doesn’t appear here, and the K%, BB%, and HR% are quite close to his Steamer projection.
It’s a typo. His name is Leroy Jenkins and he’s going to take the league by storm.
Thumbs up lets do this
I wonder if this is a team where CJ Abrams for Sean Murphy + minor league pitching (Ritchie, Fuentes, Baumann) makes sense. Abrams is an Atlanta native.
CJ Abrams is not a shortstop and if the Braves are wise they wouldn’t view him as one.
This is all made more complicated by the fact that we don’t know what position he would be best at. Or which ones he can even play effectively. For this reason, and the fact that he’s the only extension candidate on the team not represented by Boras, I would think he’s a better candidate to stay than Gore.
I don’t think the Braves are going to do anything except keep the door open for Kim to return on a deal like the one he rejected. Maybe one for longer but at a lower AAV. I guess they would do a deal like this for Jeremy Pena, but since they did a trade with the Astros for someone and it wasn’t Pena I don’t think that’s happening.
Something like:
ATL gets: Pena, Yanier Diaz, and Lance McCullers (who at this point they would love to trade)
for
HOU gets: Sean Murphy, one of Fuentes or Waldrep, and one of Braun / Ritchie / Baumann / Owen Murphy
I think the Braves would do something like this. Pena bumps Dubon into a utility role where he fits better, and Pena is a strong defensive shortstop and good hitter for the position. Yanier Diaz can be the regular backup at C and spend time at DH for a good chunk of the rest of the time. They can take a shot on a change of scenery for McCullers, and whichever one of Fuentes or Waldrep doesn’t get traded is probably in the rotation if they don’t feel good about McCullers’ progress (or when someone gets hurt).
I want to be clear, I don’t think the Astros should do this but I think they would. They are really clear that they need more pitching and they do not want to go over the luxury tax again. With Correa, Paredes, Walker, and Pena they have four everyday players for three positions, and DH is already spoken for with Alvarez and Altuve (who theoretically could move back to second base). This trade would shave another $16M or something like that off their tax number, give them a real starting catcher, and an MLB-ready starter with lots of team control (plus another one not far off). Which in theory would allow them to bring in another pitcher. Someone like Framber Valdez or Ranger Suarez might be out of their price range, but it’s possible that Giolito, Mahle, or old friend Justin Verlander would come significantly cheaper.
Why would the rebuilding Nationals trade their 25 year old shortstop with 3 years of cheap-ish team control for 3 years of a 32 year old declining catcher who is way more expensive? It would have to be one heck of a prospect attached to get the Nationals to do that.
While I agree that it doesn’t make sense for the Nationals to do this, it also doesn’t make sense for the Braves to do it either. Abrams just had a “career year” and wasn’t even all that good. Murphy probably has similar projection for the next three years (he’s 31 btw) and while he’s more expensive, he’s only being paid $45 million while Abrams will probably make $25ish million over that time and Murphy does have a club option with no buy out for his age 34 season which has some value, too.
Sean Murphy made the honorable mention for this year’s trade value series while Abrams was 47th. But as a Braves fan if they made this trade straight up I’d be miffed. We don’t need another player that if you squint he’s maybe an above average regular. And the difference in money doesn’t seem to be enough to really swim in the deep end of the free agent pool either.
He is an above average regular but he has two issues: (1) as of right now he has no position and (2) he runs a low walk rate with low BABIP so he doesn’t get on base at a high enough rate to move him too far down the defensive spectrum.
I find it mystifying that a guy with that speed has never run a .300 or higher BABIP. It’s not the worst in MLB by any means but combined with the low number of walks it leaves him in a place that’s kind of like “Gavin Sheets, but he will steal 30 bases for you.” It plays well at shortstop and poorly in left field or at first base, but we have known he wasn’t a shortstop for over a year now.
How do you value a player whose plus value is tied up in baserunning and whose position is completely unknown? I don’t think you can trade for a player like that. He is too valuable to be given away but you can’t trade anything of value for a player who might not be able to do the job you hired him for.
Love the player comps for Acuna and Sale!
My preferred comp listed above is MOTORBOAT JONES
Sale’s are great but being compared to Trout/Yelich at age 28 is pretty scary. 🙂
This team sucks. No way they make the playoffs without some additions.
manoah isn’t on the braves anymore. Lowkey hope he comes back to Toronto, wanna frame the signed jersey
“Players are listed with their most recent teams wherever possible. This includes players who are unsigned or have retired, players who will miss 2026 due to injury, and players who were released in 2025.”
I think the over/under on similar comments across all 30 team projections is about 12.5 😀
I think people are going to sleep on the Braves this year. They had a very solid roster but had a case of Murphy’s Law in 2025. 26 out of 26 Fangraph’s staffers projected them to make the playoffs last year. Not a whole lot has changed since than. It wouldn’t surprise me to see this team have a similar trajectory to the Blue Jays. The Jays entered 2024 with a very solid roster but had an incredibly unlucky season. Their only major additions in the offseason were Santander who put up -0.9 WAR and Jeff Hoffman who put up -0.4 WAR. Yet they made it to the World Series when almost everyone was out on them (only 2 staffers picked them to make the playoffs). I’m not saying they’re World Series bound but I definitely think they have just as good a shot as anyone else not named the Dodgers.
Most of the Braves’ hitters weren’t very good in 2024, either. The Braves are coming off two straight down years, whereas the Blue Jays were coming off only one.
It’s a shame Charlie Morton retired because his old man comps made my heart skip a beat.
Is there a better free agent fit this offseason than the Braves and Ha-Seong Kim?They have money to spend and rank 30th in projected WAR from the position. Only other contenders with a SS need are the Blue Jays (Bichette?) and maybe Yankees (?). Dubon is a perfect utility guy/Ozzie insurance.
All true. Maybe Boston will need a SS but they do have Mayer. Cleveland maybe also. Kim will have suitors.
It’s strange that the earlier ZiPS predicted this as a 79 win team, and now it looks a lot better. It’s good of course, but strange.
Well, as a Braves fan it’s humbling to see the projections be fairly bearish. Even still having five players in your lineup that could exceed 4 war is fairly solid, however as mentioned it’s an extreme drop off when you get to Profar, Dubón, and Albies. Harris is also an EXTREME wild card.
Ultimately if they could sign/bring in a higher ceiling player for SS/LF it could help everyone feel better about this lineup. Same for the rotation, sign someone and maybe send Lopez to the bullpen to help shore up that area
I’ll take the over on the whole projection. Old manager was stale. New guy has something to prove. Best players were either hurt or recovering from injury.
Theres a lot of upside but its a make or break year. An extended work stoppage would hurt the Braves more than most being towards the end of their window
Make or break in what way? Chris Sale is the only significant player on a contract year. Their core isn’t past 30. The offense is all in tact.
The player comps for the top 15 players/pitchers are insane. Some teams dont have one guy with a decent comp.
Hmmm, I’m a little concerned about how Sale will finish his career. Let’s take a look at his comps: Lefty Grove, Carl Hubbell, and Randy Johnson. That sounds somewhat promising.
Sidebar for folks who follow the Braves: what the heck ever happened with Jarred Kelenic? I only just now learned he’s gone.
He never really hit, eventually became AAA depth that wasn’t worth paying arbitration prices to keep around. The measured take is reasonable gamble for the FO that didn’t pay off.
Their Pythag shows they should have been about a .500 team. Iglesias blew a lot of games early in the season. They had the 3rd worst record in 1-run games.
A return to the mean there along with (hopefully) not everyone being atrocious all at once makes them a playoff contender.
That said, the window is closing. They’ve been able to turn non brand-name prospects into contributors so that could help. But they really should look at a retool.
Last year kind of felt like 2014. They had a down year coming off of a 96 win season with a seemingly young core. Then they unloaded and basically set the foundation for the current crop.
If they are say 8 back of the wild card at the trade deadline, what would they get for Acuna and others?
Presumably Suarez and Yaz push them up about 2 wins?
