When Medieval Penises become Modern Window-Latches

An off-the-cuff post today, because my brother is coming up to visit my newborn baby (yay!), and I am writing this while said newborn snores loudly and makes those weird pterodactyl quacking noises.

This post is just about a lovely set of coincidences that made me think about community and kindness - it’s not terribly complicated.

Yes, I am sniping at Piet Oudolf imitators.

This week, I started reading Erin Maglaque’s fascinating book Presence: A Hidden History of the Female Body, which I encountered through a powerful extract published in the Guardian.

I first wrote about Brilliana, Lady Harley, back in December 2025. A mother of seven, living on the border between England and Wales, she is remembered both for her astonishingly sanguine refusal to surrender her castle during a prolonged siege in the English Civil War, and for the four hundred-odd letters she wrote to family members, primarily her beloved oldest son Ned.

There is a paywell on the very last section of this post, because I get into spoilers for what I am working on at the moment.
