Good evening. All good things must come to an end, and knelly death of “Supermarionation” with Gerry Anderson all puppetloaders sounding was, with not many peoplodes beholding The Secret Service with their eyebolds, oh yes, and why for? With a ready on and soon find out.

Now starting on it was strictly practicold, mariontettes with the strings coming out of the heads all trittly-how, but catching hold of viewing public’s imaginations and many peoploaders watching all it sort of a cult becoming and most populous and deep joy many many peoploaders giving. Oh yes. And what with decade almost passing, Supercar first to the skies taking between and The Secret Service appearing, many many technicold advancing the Supermarionation team was made, with the puppetloaders looky almost like the real peoploaders and movy natural, although still not walking, and the nice modelettes looky really lovely and blow up most realistic and all that. But the imaginings of the viewing public with their eyebolders the screens beholding and looky on is most important, and The Secret Service is trying hard to getting that looky on with all gimmicks and such, but not doing, quite, oh folly.

Being like and many Anderson programmolds with the puppetloaders and everything, The Secret Service is dealing with the hushy secret organizers and having all sorts of technicold does really miraculous stuff, by golly, oh yes. The secret organizers is the BISHOP (British Intelligence Secret Headquarters – Operation Priest) and their technicold the Minimizer, ray and shrinky turns peoploaders into height all the same as an Anderson puppetloader. So you see there are lots of chances, mixy up all the live peoploaders and the little puppetloaders on the screen all trittly-how. (Mixy up like that always happening, with the peoploaders hands closing up and the puppetloaders in the background and suchlike, but The Secret Service more than most of them, my goodness yes.)

Now Minimizer is belonging of Father Stanley Unwin, and he is looky liking and has the same voice as real peoploader Stanley Unwin, and this is another gimmick to get the viewing peoploaders all looky on, bums on seats and all that. Oh yes. Unwin, those days, very populode entertaining with the trademark gibberlode old cobblers talking “Unwinese”. Scripts have him, every episode, talking very fast and some interlocutold bafflemost and in the head confusing, even if, plotting concerned, all this baffling not really needed. Howbesomeover, Unwin’s linguisticold versatibility is deep respect from me having, at least, hence attempting homage thisold, oh yes.

So Father Unwin undercover all pottery about, with the old housekeeper all not knowing about and the old Model T Ford for travellode and very country vicar, and then all of a sudden the BISHOP calls action, and Father Unwin takes his assistant Matthew all faithful and shrinky down and put in briefcase, and drivey off they go. And with Matthew all shrinky down and Father Unwin fast the gibberlode talking at all peoploaders, all excellent for sneaky and the sabotaging criminolds and internationable espionagers, all their nasty plans foiling, oh yes. Well, mostly.

Trouble is, the shrinky down and gibberlode, all samey every week, and sometimes not even some difference any plotwise making, whether Matthew is normal peoploader height or shrinky. (Though always Father Unwin, every episode starting, shrinky Matthew, whether need it or not, until I’m sure complex the poor lad becoming, oh yes.) Now, my thinking, important distinction having between a concept and a gimmick, here, and the Anderson earlier shows all on concept basey; with your Thunderbirds and the concept is the Internationable Rescue with its technicabold and equal to all eventualites and such, or your Joe 90 and the taping on the Big Rat and the skills and everything all into the brainy download for eponymous to handle threat each week … The Secret Service only having the gimmicks, the shrinky down and gibberloding, and it’s not enough, my way of thinking, all of a show to be carrying.

And besides, with the plots and the stories as they go on, lots of them all used and second-hand looking, with the borrowing from the Anderson Captain Scarlet and such from episodes and also the puppetloaders and the modelettes, and (which is sensible because of the espionaging and thrilly bits and such) The Avengers. So you have the tank with the automating all running amok, and the homing pigeonloaders with the secret installings flybold over and pictures taky, and the golf course with the micropholders and buggy and secrets revealing, and the priests all mobsters disguisey, and by crikey I’ve seen it all before with my eyebolds, oh yes.

Now, it’s not The Secret Service exactibold bad show … it’s having the gorgeous modelettes and such, and by the play between the charactolds and entertaining being by and how, and the theme tune all pseudo-ecclesiasticable and crazy up the head … it’s in a cosy and amiabold way all enjoyabold, quite. But with it not having the old Anderson programmold touch with the verving and intellibonce and things, and the viewing peoploaders not beholding so much with their eyebolds … and, besides, of the thirteen episoders halving an hour long, and two-more costing times than fifty minutes of much more populode Thunderbirds and such. So Lord Grade with the cigar-chomping and pulled the plug, and told Gerry Anderson to making other stuff. (Which he did, and UFO all being bloody good, so all right.) But Supermarionation all here ending, and us not beholding with our eyebolds anything like, by crikey, no not ever again. So this is the way Supermarionation not bang ending, but with trittly-how and folly folly folly up the falolloper. Oh yes.

All good things must come to an end, and the death knell of Gerry Anderson’s “Supermarionation” shows was sounded with the seldom-seen oddity The Secret Service. Why? Well, we’re about to find out.…

Anderson’s peculiar sci-fi marionette genre had begun for strictly practical reasons, but grew into something of a cult because of the way the shows managed to catch people’s imaginations; as time went by (The Secret Service was made almost ten years after the pioneering Supercar), the Supermarionation team’s ability to deal with the technical challenges of the material increased – the puppets, by now, had naturalistic proportions and appearance, and even a fair range of movement, and the quality of the models and the effects filming has rarely been equalled. But it was the catching of the viewers’ imaginations that mattered, and that quality is, sadly, rather lacking from The Secret Service, despite its rather obvious attention-grabbing gimmicks …

As with so many other Anderson shows, The Secret Service centres on a secret organization with semi-miraculous technology; in this case, the organization is the BISHOP (British Intelligence Secret Headquarters – Operation Priest), and the technology is the Minimizer, a shrinking ray built into a book, which can reduce a human being’s height to, err, well, roughly the same as a Supermarionation puppet. So The Secret Service has several attempts to blend live action with the puppets on the screen. (This was always a feature of the Supermarionation shows – they all had those cuts to closeups of real human hands handling controls and so forth – but there’s rather more of it in this one.)

The Minimizer is the property of Father Stanley Unwin, who is voiced by, and closely modelled on, the real Stanley unwin. This is the show’s second big gimmick: Unwin was a popular entertainer at the time, whose trademark was speaking in a scrambled dialect of his own invention, dubbed “Unwinese”. The scripts call for him to baffle some hapless interlocutor with this gibberish at least once per episode. Unfortunately, the scripts call on him to do this whether it fits in with the plot or not. Still, Unwin’s linguistic versatility commands respect, at least from me, hence this attempt at a homage to it.

Father Unwin potters about as a country vicar, with an antique Model T Ford and a dim-witted housekeeper, until a call for action from the BISHOP comes in – at which point he reduces his faithful assistant Matthew to marionette-size, packs him into a conveniently customized suitcase, and drives off into action. With his reduced size, Matthew can sneak into places, and with his trademark gibberish Father Unwin can talk his way into them, so they’re admirably suited to foiling the insidious plans of foreign agents or international master criminals… well, mostly they are.

The trouble is, I think, that these particular gimmicks don’t really have much variety in them – indeed, it’s sometimes hard to see how they fit in to a given plot (more than once, Matthew has to go into action in situations where it doesn’t make much difference whether he’s miniaturized or not. Nonetheless, Father Unwin insists on shrinking him down, at the start of every episode. The poor lad’s going to get a complex from all of this, you mark my words.) I think this marks an important difference, between what one might call a concept and a gimmick. Earlier Anderson shows were based on concepts: Thunderbirds had International Rescue with its endless resources of fantastic technology, Joe 90 had the Big Rat, which could program its eponymous hero with whatever skills and knowledge he needed to face a particular threat.… The Secret Service just has gimmicks, in the form of double-talk and a shrinking ray. It’s not enough, really, to carry the show.

It doesn’t help, either, that some of the stories, and some of the effects, look distinctly second-hand; there are open borrowings both from other Anderson shows like Captain Scarlet, and (sensibly enough, I suppose, given the spy/thriller format) The Avengers. Automated tank running amok? Homing pigeons taking photographs of secret installations? Bugged golf courses? Mobsters disguised as priests? Seen it all before, matey.

It’s not that The Secret Service is a bad show, exactly… it has some positively gorgeous model work, odd bits of entertaining byplay between the characters, and that insane pseudo-ecclesiastical theme tune… it’s enjoyable enough, in an amiable, cosy, sort of a way. It just doesn’t have the verve and intelligence of earlier Anderson shows, and this told against it in viewing figures … also, each of the thirteen half-hour episodes cost more than twice as much as a fifty-minute episode of the much more popular Thunderbirds. You can bet that ITC’s cigar-chomping supremo Lord Grade noticed that. So he pulled the plug on The Secret Service, and told Gerry Anderson to go and make something else. (Which he did, and it was UFO, and it was bloody good too.) But that was the end of Supermarionation, and we shall not look upon its like again.… This is the way Supermarionation ends, not with a bang, but with a trittly-how and folly folly folly up the falolloper.

I Have a Dream

Well, I had a dream. Last night. And it drove me to a painful realization about myself.

The overall structure of the dream was unclear and muddy as usual – I’m not one of those people who have detailed dreams with coherent plotlines. But the one detail I did remember was that, at one point, I had to post a letter. (And a postcard. Why, I don’t recall.) And, when I pulled out a book of stamps, I discovered that they were, all of them, entirely black. I remember worrying that, this being the case, how would anyone know these were first class stamps? Which was vitally important for some reason.

But I shouldn’t have worried. Because, when I stuck a stamp onto the envelope, it changed; the black panel became a deep purple colour, the words “1st Class” emerged in white, along with a picture of the Queen’s head, because my subconscious mind is used to that, apparently. Sticking another stamp on the postcard, however, displayed the same imagery, but with the words “Error: Unable to connect to WiFi network” scrolling across it. Yes, these were Internet-enabled smart stamps. And my subconscious mind may not have registered King Charles III, but it is clearly familiar with connectivity issues.

So. This idea stuck with me, when I emerged into what passes for consciousness these days. And, examining it in the sober light of day, I came to a dreadful conclusion.

Internet-enabled smart stamps. What problem do they solve? None, that I can see. I suppose you might be able to use them for tracking, to find out where a piece of mail is… assuming it can get a wi-fi signal, wherever it is; anyway, that’s a problem better solved by, y’know, making the postal service more reliable. What problems do they introduce? Several, the connectivity issue being the most apparent. To make the things, you’d have to develop some kind of flexible thin-film LED display, with an equally flexible thin-film transistor substrate, and while these ideas are borderline feasible, getting them to the point where they’re common and cheap enough to be used on stamps is going to be a long and very expensive process.

But – they look cool! And it’s an innovative idea! It’s modern, it’s radical, it’s cutting edge! It pushes the envelope, as it were. (I’m here all week, folks.)

I have a dream, about smart stamps. An innovation that has no conceivable benefit, that nobody has asked for, that would be horrendously expensive to implement, that would add cost and complexity and a whole new set of difficulties to the simple act of posting a letter. What does this say about me? And here comes my hideous personal epiphany….

High-tech, pointless, inordinately expensive. I am sorry to admit it, but the evidence is inarguable. I am a closet techbro.

I suppose the situation has its benefits, though. I’ll need, oh, about £25 million for the initial feasibility studies, a further £100 million for the pilot plant, and about another £500 million for other expenses such as my salary as CEO. Marching on Its Stomach

(Scene: the cavernous docking bay of the United Earth Space Command troopship USS Duane Doberman. A bulky cargo shuttle comes in for a landing. It settles onto the deck.)

(Nothing happens.)

(Nothing happens some more.)

(Eventually, the shuttle’s cockpit opens, and the PILOT clambers out. He is dressed in nondescript coveralls and carries a clipboard in one hand. He walks across the deck towards a large, closed door. There is an intercom panel beside it. The PILOT pushes a button on the intercom.)

(Nothing happens.)

(The PILOT pushes the button again. This time, he holds it down, and speaks.)

PILOT: Supplies delivery for the Mobile Infantry here. Open up, will you?

(Nothing happens.)

(The PILOT says something under his breath that we can’t quite hear. He moves over to the door, and raps on it sharply with his clipboard.)

(Nothing happens.)

(The PILOT is clearly annoyed by now. He shouts, emphasizing each word with a blow of his fist to the door.)

PILOT: OPEN UP, YOU DOZY BUGGERS! DELIVERY! COME ON, OPEN UP ALREADY!

(There is no response from behind the door, but, nearby, a small hatch opens in the deck, and a STOKER‘s head pops out. The STOKER is a small man, dressed in coveralls like the PILOT, but much grimier.)

STOKER: Oi! What’s all the noise about? You stop that or you’ll wake the ship’s cat – besides, the head stoker’s got a hangover, he doesn’t want all this racket.

PILOT: Sorry, I – wait a minute, since when do starships have stokers?

STOKER: Since Rebel Moon: The Scargiver, that’s since when.

PILOT: … Whatever. Look, I’ve got a delivery here for the MI, and I can’t get a peep out of them. Called them on the radio, tried the intercom, nothing.

STOKER: The Mobile Infantry? Well, you’re out of luck there, mate, you’ll have to wait. They’re out.

PILOT: What do you mean, they’re out?

STOKER: Call to action, innit? Soon as they get that, they get into their little capsules and off they pop, down to the planet, kicking some E.T. arse.

PILOT: What, all of them?

STOKER: Them’s the rules, for that lot. Everybody drops! No exceptions! Makes me glad I’m just shovelling coal, I can tell you. Steady work, that. No surprises. I mean, OK, we got RSI, we got silicosis, we got the odd explosion, but it beats getting shot at by bug-eyed monsters, know what I mean?

PILOT: Never mind all that. I need someone to take delivery of this gear. Can you sign for it?

STOKER: Not my job, mate.

PILOT: Well, whose job is it?

STOKER: Battalion quartermaster, I s’pose. But he’s –

PILOT: On the planet, yeah, I got the message already. Look, I’m on a schedule, here, can’t you find someone to take this lot?

STOKER: Well, I dunno. What are you delivering?

(The PILOT looks at his clipboard.)

PILOT: 600 generic power packs for phased plasma rifles in the forty-watt range. 600 bacterial spasm guns with dual gangrene/leprosy ammunition packages and Get Out Of War Crimes Free card. 5000 rounds of 12.7x99mm ammunition, officers’ sidearms, for the use of. 18,000 MRE packages in cardboard and styrofoam flavours – wait, that should be packaging – no, I was right the first time, flavours. 30,000 tubes of power armour joint lubricant. 600 groinal overcompensators for the Spartan-300 power armour series. 600 Neuralink™ communicator implants with self-drilling inserter attachment. 1800 75mm transgender-seeking missiles for Spartan-300 integrated rocket launchers. Six gross of M999 thermonuclear hand grenades, three trench pens, two purple guns, and a cartridge with a spare key.

STOKER: Gordon Bennett. Well, there’s no way I can fit all that lot through the hatch, is there?

PILOT: So what am I meant to do with it, then?

STOKER: Tell you what, mate, just leave it by the door. It’ll be fine.

PILOT: Leave it by the door!? Who do you think I am, Amazon Prime?

(SCENE: some time later. New Arlington Veterans’ Cemetary (formerly known as Siberia). At the reviewing stand, GRAND ADMIRAL ZAPHOD HEGSETH BRANNIGAN IV, in full dress uniform with an astonishing number of medals, ascends to the podium, his face grave.)

BRANNIGAN: We are gathered here today to commemorate the valiant white cishet men of 404 Battalion Mobile Infantry, lost in battle against the Dreadwokes of Alpha Mensae II. Desperate and starving, with their plasma rifles exhausted, their armour joints seized up, and their groins cruelly undercompensated, they fought on to the last man, preferring death itself to the five-star luxury POW camps of the alien enemy. We honour their sacrifice, their sharp minds, their strong bodies, their mission-first mindset. At the patriotic photo-op, and in the budget committee meeting for military appropriations, we will remember them.

Sex and the Swiss Army Knife

There’s been noise made by the right-wing extremists now running the USA (into the ground) about sex being only for the purpose of procreation, and doing it just for enjoyment is a deadly sin and should be a crime, and will be if they have their way. I’m tempted to wonder what Donald Trump has to say on the subject. Maybe we should ask him – but, no, let’s not bother him, he’s a very busy man; that Constitution thing won’t just tear itself up, you know, and then there’s all that important golfing to be done. Perhaps we could ask someone else who’s in a position to know, like Stormy Daniels.

People espouse this viewpoint for a number of reasons, of course. There are the overly rigid “Biblical” moralists, some of whom may even have glanced at a page of the Bible once. There are the peculiar obsessives who want to stamp out LGBT+ people (gay people can’t have procreative sex, so they shouldn’t have sex at all, in fact they shouldn’t do anything at all, because they shouldn’t exist, because – well, there is no actual reason for this attitude, is there?) And then there’s the fact that sex needn’t cost any money, which affronts those wealthy people for whom being wealthy is not enough in itself – to really enjoy being wealthy, they have to know that poor people are miserable all the time, and they take pains to make that happen. So those are the three main reasons – sanctimony, bigotry, and petty spite.

Are there, I wonder, any reasons to hold this belief that aren’t reprehensible? Is it possible that these people, awful though they are, might actually have a valid point? So, I thought I’d take a hard look at the intellectual underpinnings of this idea.

“The purpose of sex is procreation” is often stated axiomatically, as an unchallengeable statement of a self-evident fact. Some people will happily make it “the sole purpose” with the same degree of confidence. I am moved to wonder, “is it, though?”

Let me introduce some rough-and-ready statistics, here. Let’s posit a happy, God-fearing, heterosexual Christian couple, who are trying to start a family. The odds they will succeed are pretty good; 78% of such couples manage to conceive within a year. So, my next question – one of many that make my Google search history a litany of unimaginable horrors – is, well, how often would they try, over the course of a year? Well, my search coughed up a general recommendation of having sex every 2-3 days.

So. Ballpark figure: our philoprogenitive couple could do the deed about 150 times, and still have a 22% chance of failing to conceive. So, the chance for conception in each individual act is… OK, I had to ask for help for this one (I did get an A in my maths “O” level, you know, but that was in 1979, and I may just possibly have forgotten a few things) – turns out it’s a hair under 1%.1

Now, then. What are the chances, for an individual act, that at least one of our couple (both, if he’s doing the job right, and he damn well should be) finds it pleasurable? Do I hear 100%? I think I do.

So. If the chance for procreation is under 1%, and the chance of pleasure is 100%… then why, in the name of all that is statistical, should we believe that the much less likely outcome is the sole intended one?

I blame Aristotle, or at least people who are overly attached to Aristotle. In particular, Aristotle’s idea of the causes of things. This is not the straightforward pattern of causation that we’re familiar with (you know, like “Brexit causes British economic decline”, or “industrial pollution causes global warming which causes climate change”, or “the appearance of Nigel Farage causes Steve to shout very rude things at the TV”) – no, Aristotle’s four causes are more like the things that have to come together2 in order for something to exist. The stock example is the dining table, which has, in Aristotelian terms:-

  • a material cause (which is a pile of wood)
  • a formal cause (the plans for a table)
  • an efficient cause (a carpenter)
  • and, finally, a final cause (a flat surface at a convenient height for sitting down at and eating your dinner off.)

Which is all very well, but… behind me, as I type, is a dining table. I know it is a dining table; it has served as such for full many a family meal. But it’s also served for a lot more things. My mum and dad played uncountable games of Scrabble at that table. After my dad died, my mum used it to do jigsaw puzzles. I put my typewriter on that table and wrote two entire novels on it. Was all this tantamount to sodomy? I don’t think so.

Things can have more than one use. They may even have uses that no one expects, until they turn up in practice – think of all the things we do with lasers, for instance. Things may even be designed with more than one practical purpose in mind. I have a Swiss Army knife right here, folks. What’s its final cause?

You know, if I ever get myself a coat of arms, I might base it on that3 image.

So, even with human-designed, human-made things, the Aristotelian “final cause” can be more than a little elusive. And sex is not a human invention. Sex is a product – granted, one of the early ones, but still a product – of evolution. And evolution has no intentions. Even if, as I do, you believe in a God Who made this world, evolution is just a tool in His toolbox, and tools themselves have no intentions.

“But surely, Steve,” you might say, “even if the tool has no intentions, its Wielder must?” Well, yes, I believe God has a plan. I also believe that I don’t know what it is. Indeed, being a mortal man, I can’t know what it is – to understand the mind of God, I would have to have a God-like mind myself, and while I have a pretty high estimate of my own capabilities, I don’t rate myself that much. Saying that you know the final cause of sex – or death, or gravity, or the M31 galaxy, or xenon, or the aardvark – is, effectively, saying “yeah, I know what God’s thinking with this one.” And, with all due respect, no matter how brilliant you are… you don’t.

Orthogenesis, the concept of evolution as a teleological force, one which “progresses” life from “lower” to “higher” forms, is one of those bad ideas that just won’t go away4. You see it a lot in “Golden Age” SF, which saw it as inevitable that Life begins with small blobby things, goes on to simple life forms (algae, mosses, plants) and then more complex ones (invertebrates, fishes) and yet more complex ones (amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals) until it reaches the primates (monkeys, apes, coloured people) and finally culminates in (for men) John W. Campbell Jr. and (for women) I dunno, some blonde with big tits. It all makes perfect sense, if you’re a semi-educated racist.

The thing is, evolution produces complexity – the endless rolling of the mutational dice can produce organisms with beneficial changes (which tend to thrive) or harmful changes (which tend to die out) or changes which don’t make any immediate difference. But, because the conditions those organisms live in can change, what might be beneficial in one setting can become neutral, or harmful… and so the mutational lottery rolls ever onward, making creatures that might be perfectly suited for one environment, but which keel over and die when it changes. We are all, remember, remote descendants of one particular branch of life, the one which caused (and thrived in) the Oxygen Catastrophe about two and a quarter billion years ago5.

Sex, as a behaviour which is pleasurable and social (usually, although it can also be done alone, as Thor the walrus on his visit to Scarborough so kindly demonstrated – that link is very NSFW, by the way), serves all sorts of purposes. “This evolutionary development can be understood if it is assumed that sexual behavior is no longer altogether concerned with fertilization but is an important part of social organization” says a biology textbook on a shelf near me, and if you say “well, that’s modern woke scientists for you then,” I will point out that this particular biology textbook is John Paul Scott’s Animal Behavior, and it was first published in 1958, and mine is the Scientific Book Guild edition of 19606.

Know who else gets this, besides Eisenhower-era biologists? The Christian Church. Here (PDF link) is the Church of Ireland’s marriage service, and the Church, in Ireland, is not notably a hotbed of permissiveness. In part, it says, “Marriage was ordained that husband and wife may comfort and help each other, living faithfully together in plenty and in need, in sorrow and in joy. It is intended that with delight and tenderness they may know each other in love, and through the joy of their bodily union they may strengthen the union of their hearts and lives. It is intended that they may be blessed with the children they may have, in caring for them and in bringing them up in accordance with God’s will to His praise and glory.” Or, the tl;dr version is, marriage is for partnership, fucking, and (optionally) children.

Animals use sex for all sorts of reasons. I remember an episode of Bergerac that revolved around a gay horse. Our closest primate relatives, the bonobos, use sex for conflict resolution, the way other primates use fighting. We’ve all, I’m sure, met at least one dog who would hump anything that didn’t get out of the way fast enough. And you don’t want to think about what mallards get up to7. And human beings can match (or maybe even exceed) animals’ creativity in this respect.

Sex does not have only one function. Sex is a Swiss Army knife, folks. Ignore the killjoys, and go experience the joy of your bodily unions in whatever (sane, safe and consensual) form you like. I would say “bugger Aristotle”, but he was an ancient Greek, so someone probably already did.

The Little Man Who Isn’t There

Returning to the so-called “AI” thing, here, because this nonsense shows no sign of going away, and it damn well needs to. As many other sensible people are pointing out, thankfully, including James Fodor in this excellent article here.

I was moved, a while back, to lay out my own credentials on the topic, over on File 770. I studied Artificial Intelligence for two years as an “outside subject” – part of my Linguistics course at the University of Edinburgh – and went on to the field of computational linguistics, or how computers could help with things like speech recognition and automated translation (it was the early 1980s, so the answer was basically “not very well”). Later on, there was my infamous failed research project, which involved a very recondite sort of machine translation indeed. So, is my knowledge of the subject incomplete, superficial, and decades out of date? Yes. Do I still reckon I know more about it than Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg put together? Also yes.

The history of AI and robotics could be neatly summarized as “it turns out that’s more complicated than we thought.” In the good old days of SF, it all seemed simple enough; you would have an electronic computer that would serve as a brain, video cameras for eyes, microphones for ears, and some sort of humanoid chassis that would move about, and hey presto, you would have a humanoid robot. Just needs some of the details working out, that’s all. Obviously, your first lot of robots would only be capable of simple functions, like walking, talking, fetching and carrying, but once those marvellous computer brains were improved on, you would have robots capable of anything people could do, only faster, and tirelessly, and with absolute mechanical precision.

Guess what, it turned out to be more complicated than they thought. The basic human functions such as walking, seeing, and understanding speech are actually extremely complicated indeed; we take them for granted because we have been honed by millions of years of evolution to do all these things as a matter of course. The head of the AI department while I was studying it was heavily into visual processing, so we hapless students got a lot of information about the incredibly complex mechanisms of the optic nerve and the visual cortex that enable us humans to, well, see. Soldering a video camera to a motherboard just isn’t going to cut it.

It really is important to remember that the whole “the brain is a computer” thing is what we literary types call a metaphor. It’s a useful (usually) parallel, but it isn’t actually the case. It’s important to remember all the ways in which the brain is not like a computer at all. It’s not made of the same stuff, it’s not wired up the same way, it uses comparatively sluggish electro-chemical impulses instead of pure electricity. It is complicated and error-prone, but also error-tolerant to a degree impossible for electronic circuits. You may well have heard the story of Phineas Gage, which just goes to show how fault-tolerant the brain can be; try firing a six kilogram iron bar through a rack of servers sometime, I think you’ll find it doesn’t just make them sweary and grouchy. The brain adapts, learns, develops. And, rather importantly, it does so inside a human body, in which it comes, pre-packaged, automatically.

The body gets a bit of a bum rap, it seems to me. Whether it is Cartesian dualists talking about the mind/body interface, or Christians promising that we get to trade up to a better model like unto His glorious body, or transhumanists suggesting we ditch it and go for something in durable, wipe-clean silicon instead, there always seems to be this idea that the mind is what’s important, and the body is just holding it back. The mind is the true self, the essence of you, the thing which contemplates the infinite and appreciates beauty. The body is just that thing full of aches and pains that you shit with.

Better minds than mine (or more spiritual souls, or higher grades of meat-robot programming) have wrestled with the question of the exact nature of consciousness, and I’m not about to propound any answers to that one here. But, whatever our consciousness is, it is ineluctably entangled with the physicality of our bodies. All the experiences through which the brain grows and develops are modulated through the perceptions of our bodies.

This includes, by the way, a very definite sense of the self – a boundary where we leave off and the rest of the world begins. The sense of touch is constant and ubiquitous; we are always, through that sense, informed of things that are not us, but which are in contact with us. Also, we have a proprioceptive system, and while I’ve read about artificial ways of seeing, hearing, touching, and even tasting and smelling, I’ve not come across any references to that one in the AI literature. (Which doesn’t mean there aren’t any – my knowledge is incomplete and outdated, remember? – but the topic certainly takes a back seat to things like visual processing or speech recognition.) Basically, your brain gets constant feedback, from things called muscle spindles, on what every muscle in your body is doing, or having done to it, at any given moment. (Usually. I speak with some [lack of] feeling here, because my persistent ulnar neuropathy has left me with no proprioception in the little finger of my left hand, and even if you’ve never heard of proprioception, believe me, you miss it when it’s gone. I had a session with a physiotherapist a little while ago, and it was very, very weird to see him wiggle that finger about – I could feel him touching me, but the sensation of the motion was completely absent. No feedback, you see. Also, it plays hell with my typing. Ten-finger typing gets slowed down if you only know where nine of them are.)

There’s a cautionary tale I heard somewhere in my dubious education, about a student practicing with a CNC lathe and inadvertently mistyping a start parameter, which had the machine start cutting into a metal surface, with the start point half a centimetre inside the metal. The results were noisy and expensive. And if the machine had had a sense of touch, and/or a proprioceptive system, it would have picked up on the error.

Can a computer develop a sense of self, an identity, without that foundation of physicality? Can consciousness arise without identity? Well, I don’t know – as I said earlier, I’m not in a position to describe what consciousness is. But I’m pretty sure that these questions aren’t troubling the designers of large language models.

Speaking of which, let’s look at another one of those useful but misleading metaphors, the language of computers. Many of us have some notion of what computer programs look like; some of us are wearily familiar with various programming languages. Depending on the degree of abstraction and obfuscation involved, an ordinary human can follow and understand the instructions in a language like BASIC or Pascal; things like IF-THEN-ELSE or REPEAT UNTIL make sense to our human brains. However, these are the sorts of things that you find in high-level programming languages, and these are only abstract representations of the instructions that are actually going into a CPU. Programs in high-level languages have to be compiled or (key word here) interpreted into the binary code1 the computer understands.

That binary code is interesting – to me, at least – because the act of putting that pattern of bits through the registers actually causes those bits to flip. It’s like what they call performative verbs – verbs where the act of saying them causes them to happen. “I promise” is perhaps the canonical example. (I wish some people would get it into their heads that “refute” is not performative – to refute something, you must present facts and arguments that disprove it. Just saying “I refute these allegations”, as so many politicians do, is not enough for an actual refutation to happen. I’m digressing again, sorry.) Similarly, you can regard the code – whose execution, once begun, cannot be denied – as a series of imperatives (the “verbs” in BASIC were actually called commands, after all.) So, when your program is compiled or interpreted, the vaguely-similar-to-English high-level language is being translated into another. Another language, that consists entirely of impersonal performative imperative verbs.

Those impersonal self-fulfilling commands affect the computer’s memory, so let’s have a look at that useful but (you guessed it) inaccurate metaphor. Stuff from the central processing unit of the computer comes and goes between it and the random access memory (RAM) chips, which are commonly compared to human short-term memory; every so often, information is transferred to the backing store (the hard disc, or SSD chips, or floppy discs if you’re old school, or cassette tape if you’re really old school), which is like human long-term memory. The operative word there, of course, is like.

The processor of a computer doesn’t actually remember what’s gone before, in the way that humans do. When 010111000111010110 pops up in a register (I am aware that computers have moved on past 16 bits, thank you, I’m just trying to save on the typing here), there is no sense of “ah, that reminds me of 00011110001101010110 and those long sunny afternoons drinking absinthe on the banks of the Seine.” That pattern of bits is just there, supplanting whatever pattern was there before it, and in a tiny fraction of a second it, too, will be gone, replaced by some other pattern. No computer has ever asked itself mais où sont les 0001110000110110s d’antan?

The contents of a computer’s CPU changes trillions of times a second, and there is no way of telling, from inside the CPU, whether its instructions come from the internal processes of its programming, or from short-term or long-term memory, or from an external sensor, or from some underpaid code monkey banging on a keyboard, or even from a solar flare or a defective microwave in the kitchen next door. Given this, it’s hard to see how a computer can, innately, have any continuity of experience, any conception of self, or any sense of the passage of time or the existence of space. Could technology progress to the point where it could have these things? Maybe. I’m pretty darn sure, though, that we don’t have that technology yet, nor is there any meaningful prospect of it on the horizon. Artificial Intelligence, if it exists, is not going to be even remotely similar to whatever kind of intelligence we have.

Incidentally, the notion of uploading human minds into a computer, so popular with the transhumanist mob, runs up against the same sorts of problems. We might be able to take a snapshot of the neural activity in a human brain (though I suspect it would take rather a lot of storage capacity2,) but running that image as a sort of executable within a computer, and having it do human-brain-like things, is going to take technical advances that just haven’t happened yet. The science fiction stories where you stick a fibre optic cable in your ear, flick a switch, and ZAM, there you are, standing on a circuit board dressed in Lycra with blue neon stripes, are going to remain science fiction. Some people sneer at the “primitives” who believed a human soul could be captured on a photographic image; I think the same derision should be aimed at the guys who believe you can capture one on a USB stick.

So, Artificial Intelligence, if it is achievable at all with current technology (and I suspect the technology which might make it achievable is some way in the future) will necessarily operate in a way which is radically, fundamentally different from human intelligence. So different that communicating with it, or even recognizing that it’s there, will present significant technological challenges. So why are we so happy – well, why are some of us so happy – to believe that Artificial Intelligence is with us here and now, ready to correct our grammar and do our homework for us?

I think the answer has a lot to do with the way the human brain works. Even the superficial level of study that I’ve had shows that our perception of the real world is very much mediated by the way the brain processes the input. There’s a whole lot of work involved between a shower of photons making chemical changes in your retina and your actual reading and understanding of these words. And the human brain, remember, is highly fault-tolerant. If some data is unclear or garbled, the brain will automatically fill in the gaps with its best guess at what should be there. Most of the time, it’s right – if it wasn’t, we’d all be walking into things and falling over all the time. Sometimes, it’s wrong. Sometimes, it’s predictably wrong, which is why you get all those stock optical illusions like the lines that look different even though they’re the same length. You get glitches where some people’s brains jump one way, and some another, hence (for example) the Dress That Broke The Internet. And that’s with direct perception – when we get into the realm of memory, well, that is subject to revisions and reinterpretations, not just to the point of forgetting things, but to the point of remembering things that never happened.

A few cases in point, from my own experience. First, let me tell you about the time I saw a UFO. I was walking downhill along a road in Gateshead, and my attention was drawn to something in the distance – a round, red, something, with a bright light flickering irregularly in the centre. It was darting in different directions above the hills on the horizon, suddenly stopping or zooming off in a new direction with apparent disregard for things like inertia. I was genuinely experiencing something like all those UFO “close encounters” that I’d read about and disbelieved over the years. Was this it? I wondered. Were our brethren from beyond the stars here at last, to impart their cosmic wisdom and welcome us into galactic society? And why had no one else noticed this thing?

So I walked on down the road a good hundred metres or so, watching this THING all the while, and suddenly something clicked in my brain, and I realized what it was. I mentioned the hills on the horizon, didn’t I? For some reason, my brain had glitched and believed that the object was as far away as the hills – but it wasn’t. It was much closer, and much smaller. It was a red balloon, with something reflective, possibly a bike reflector, stuck to one side. The apparently impossible motions – if it were a large object, far away – resolved themselves into the ordinary bobbing of a balloon in random air currents. The flickering light was just the reflector doing what it was supposed to do. And, once I’d realized that, I couldn’t see it any other way. My brain had retuned itself to the real world, and the fascinating anomaly had vanished. I won’t say I wasn’t a bit disappointed, but there we are.

Another example from a different sense, but again involving UFOs. This was a documentary about supposed alien abductees; one of them had recorded Sinister Sounds inside their home, a message from the alien visitors who were clearly planning to Do Things to them in their sleep. The recording sounded like a sort of intermittent hissing noise, but the abductee swore up and down that you could hear the words “don’t wake up” if you listened closely. And the documentary maker went back and played the recording again, and I could very plainly hear it saying don’t wake up… don’t wake up… don’t wake up… over and over again.

Some people might think this was proof positive of alien visitors/mind control/Masonic space lasers/3whatever. Being me instead of some people, I just thought, “oh, yeah, well, that’s the brain for you – the sound frequencies for the phrase are all there inside that random burst of noise, so once you’ve been told it is a phrase, your brain will automatically concentrate on those particular frequencies to interpret it as the phrase, you could probably make it say a whole bunch of three-syllable phrases if you wanted to.” It’s related to the phenomenon that phonologists call categorial perception – the human vocal tract can produce all sorts of weird and wonderful sounds, but any given language only uses a subset of them (called phonemes), so, if you hear a speech sound which isn’t in that subset, your brain tends to jam it into the nearest one that is a sound in your language. This is why (for example) English speakers pronounce “loch” as “lock” – the velar fricative represented by “ch” is a phoneme in Scots dialects and in Gaelic, but not in English, so it gets heard as the closest phoneme available, the velar stop represented by “k”. (You can learn to identify speech sounds that aren’t phonemic for you, but it does take effort – I remember lots of practice time with phonetics students in pairs, gazing intently into each others’ mouths.)

Memory? Well, I was going to offer a comic quote about witness statements, where a policeman says that according to the eye-witnesses, the crime was committed by “a tall dark short fair-haired bald man of medium height, with a hooked Roman nose, one blue eye, one brown eye, and one green eye.” Or something like that. I was sure I’d seen it in David Nobbs’s The Return of Reginald Perrin, so I got that book down from the shelf to verify it and check the exact wording. And I can’t find it. (The quote, that is, not the book.) And I think that just goes to prove my point, doesn’t it? Sometimes, human memory admits it’s faulty, and sometimes it tries to cover it up by linking in a whole bunch of material that looks like it might fit. People can, and do, sincerely believe they remember things which never happened, even in the face of compelling evidence that they didn’t happen. The brain is a wonderful thing, but it’s not always 100% reliable.

We think of ourselves as perceiving the real world, but our perceptions are mediated by our brains, which spot flaws in the input from our sense organs, and do their best to paper over the cracks. This means, among other things, that our brains are very good at spotting patterns and interpolating data to reconstruct things they’re familiar with. Unfortunately, this means our brains are also very good at spotting patterns which aren’t really there, which is how we get infallible systems for winning at roulette, conspiracy theories about Masonic space lasers, and the face on Mars.

That last one is important, because it accounts for much of the hype about “AI” – we are predisposed towards anthropomorphism, finding human-like qualities in things that aren’t human. You can attribute personalities and volition to inanimate objects based on the slightest of perceptual clues. A vacuum cleaner is just a vacuum cleaner, but Henry Hoover is a cheerful little chap, isn’t he? Stick a pair of googly eyes on them, and the most unlikely things become human.

Now, for most of humanity’s existence, the only source of human language has been human beings, so when you see or hear something producing human language, there is a very strong temptation to believe it’s human – even if it is a parrot, or a mynah bird, or something even less intelligent like a computer program. Computer programs do not have to be as sophisticated as Large Language Models for people to think they’re human.

“Ah,” says the knowledgeable reader, “he’s going to talk about ELIZA.” Yes, I am absolutely going to talk about ELIZA, because it is such a very good example. Created by Joseph Weizenbaum between 1964 and 1967, ELIZA is credited as the first chatbot; it was designed to emulate a psychotherapist, using a fairly limited set of stock responses which identified key words in its interlocutor’s messages and fitted them into templates for replies. And it had people convinced that it was a real person, that no mere machine could possibly understand them as well as ELIZA did. Now look at those dates again, and consider just how much technical progress there has been on the hardware end of things since then. ELIZA is not a sophisticated program. If you are the sort of weirdo who has a “smart” home, you probably have light bulbs with enough capacity to run ELIZA. Your fridge probably has enough computing power to run ELIZA and perform its normal fridgely duties (maintaining optimum temperatures and levels of energy usage, keeping an inventory of its contents and their expiry dates, and snitching on you to Amazon about your chocolate ice cream habit.)

So, since a rinky-dink little gizmo like ELIZA can successfully con people into believing it’s human, what chance do our poor gullible brains stand against modern technology? AI has genuinely come a long way since I staggered through the doors of Edinbugh’s Artificial Intelligence unit4; moreover, the hardware supporting it has progressed at a ferocious rate. A lot of seemingly intractable problems become rather more tractable if you can simply throw more processing power at them, which explains why things like text-to-speech, optical character recognition, speech recognition, and machine translation have reached the point of being, well, mostly adequate these days.

Mostly. Anyone who’s watched machine-generated subtitles scrolling across a news feed know that speech recognition can throw up some pretty notable errors, particularly where regional accents are involved. You can scan any amount of text and convert it to a readable computer file, as long as you don’t mind occasional foul-ups, like a history describing Hannibal as “a man of great diatinotion” at the time of the “Pfnic Wab”, or an Edgar Wallace character exclaiming in excitement, “[UNRECOVERABLE OCR ERROR]“. Machine translation can almost work in real time, for closely related languages that have substantial databases to draw on; it’s much less good if you venture further afield (as an English speaker, I found trying to converse with an Arabic speaker via machine translation was just an exercise in mutual frustration.)

Now, you may notice that a lot of these problems could be solved easily enough by the intervention of a human level intelligence. All you’d need for the speech-to-text thing, for example, is someone to listen to the speaker and, when they make a noise that the computer doesn’t recognize, insert text that matches the sounds made and the context of the speech. This is, in fact, one of the jobs that our brains do automatically for us, at an unconscious level. Similarly, the OCR problems don’t need much help beyond basic proofreading. Comprehension, spelling, and paying attention; all pretty basic human functions, things we’re taught in primary school, if we haven’t picked them up already. Basic, ordinary, everyday things – the sorts of things that, as we have previously noted, are actually damned hard to do, once you try to do them with an apparatus that isn’t a human brain.

You can do an awful lot with Large Language Models and neural networks… although neural networks have their own quirks and pitfalls; another of those cautionary tales I remember from the 1980s involved a network that had been trained, on pictures, to distinguish between NATO and Warsaw Pact tanks. It fared admirably in tests, but when a trial with fresh data began, it performed no better than chance. The network had been trained on publicity photos of NATO hardware, usually silhouetted imposingly against the skyline. Its images of Soviet vehicles, though, were mostly captured from aerial reconnaissance, looking down on them. The network had, at some time, effort, and expense, been trained to recognize the sky.5

AI technologies can do a lot, but one thing they can’t do – as James Fodor pointed out – is conceptualize. They can’t understand and work with the context of a question. To your average ordinary human mind, the tank problem is easily expressed – “that’s a picture of a tank, tell me if it’s an evil Commie tank or a nice star-spangled American one.” To the computer, all it has is an enormous pile of ones and zeroes which must be compared to other, even more enormous, piles, to see what patterns, if any, they have in common. It would go through pretty much the same process if it was checking to see how many different species of tree were in the picture.

People talk about the hierarchy of data, information, and knowledge, or at least they do in the low circles I move in. Your pile of ones and zeroes is data; computer systems are certainly able to organize it into information, but are they good enough to distil that information into actionable knowledge? To decide what’s the salient feature in an image that shows sixteen specimens of Quercus Robustus and one T-72 tank? That is still the province of actual human minds. Computers can be very, very good at systematizing data into information – in many instances, faster and more reliably than us poor humans – but the jump from information to knowledge requires understanding of concepts and context, which computers cannot yet do.

But, because of our human failings – specifically, anthropomorphism – we are easily conned into believing they can. Not so much by the AI promoters (though their ethics may be open to question), but by our own well-meaning but treacherous brains.

LLMs have immense amounts of data – which is one area where the ethics are questionable, since the AI industry’s attitude of “well, it’s public domain if we want to use it” has, to put it mildly, not gone unchallenged. And without a doubt, that data is analyzed, collated, and generally systematized into information. But the crucial third step – picking out the right information, in the context of the user’s question – is beyond the competence of a machine which can’t understand such concepts. We only believe it isn’t because our brains are telling us that the thing giving us natural-language responses is, somehow, an actual person. That we’re talking to a little man inside the computer. But the little man isn’t there6.

Even when we’re pointing out AI’s failings, anthropomorphism holds sway – increasingly, people refer to the absolute nonsense churned out by LLMs as “hallucinations”. It’s yet another helpful but misleading metaphor – suggesting, if you like, that, yeah, there may be teething troubles now, but once our beneficent techbros have persuaded the little man to lay off the funny mushrooms and the wacky baccy, everything will be just fine. Folks, the computer is not on drugs.

So, how do the AI proponents think their models are actually devising their answers? Well, I suspect that some of them genuinely believe their own hype (I swear some of these people think Tron was a documentary.) Quite frankly, it seems to me that, to a lot of these tech moguls, expertise (in technology or anything else) is not something they have, but something they buy. And, naturally, if “AI” worked, it would make that expertise cheaper for them, so they’re predisposed to believe in it. Moreover, they’re inclined to take a consumerist view of the expertise they buy, which means that, if they don’t like it, they send it back and order some that suits them better. I suspect that this is the sort of attitude that got Stockton Rush where he is today.

Some AI true believers, I think, are convinced that LLMs can lead to emergent AI – that the random rattling together of all those bits in all those processors can result in the appearance of an actual intelligence, just like the random recombinations of amino acids in the primordial ocean led to life on Earth. Who am I to say this is impossible? I would point out, though, just how long it took for those chemicals to produce life… and also that, because of all the fundamental differences between computers and humans that I mentioned earlier, an emergent AI is unlikely to regard fact-checking your article about vaccines or scuba-diving as its first priority.

I think the more realistic techbros may be hoping for a sort of “wisdom of crowds” effect – if you ask the LLM a question, the right answer must be in its data set somewhere, and surely it will stand out among all the wrong ones? Magna est veritas et praevalebit,7 and all that. Trouble is, the signal-to-noise ratio in the datasets available to LLMs is very, very high indeed – not least because of all the disinformation pumped into them by techbros and their political enablers. Not to mention the inherent biases in the initial data – build a model based on, say, all out-of-copyright works in the English language (which takes us to a cut-off point in the first half of the 20th century), and it will reflect all the implicit prejudices and unexamined assumptions of that corpus of literature, i.e. it will be racist, sexist and homophobic af.

The truth may be out there, but so are an awful lot of lies, and the computer has no way of telling which is which. Besides the copious disinformation being spewed across all available media, in some cases by the same billionnaire techbros who are trying to sell us LLMs, there is plenty of stuff that is just out of date, or innocently wrong in some other way, or isn’t meant to be taken seriously. We, the human beings, have things like life experience and a sense of humour that tell us, no, nutritionists don’t suggest we eat small rocks every day; no, hard-boiled eggs were not invented by Melvin Boyle-d’Egg in 1974. The computer has no life experience and no sense of humour.

And the signal-to-noise ratio is only going to get worse, because, as the dog returneth to his vomit, so LLMs are increasingly scraping their own output to expand their training datasets. That oft-quoted example where the chatbot says “there are no countries in Africa which start with the letter K”8 has now been so oft-quoted that it’s entrenched in the LLMs’ data hoards. To be fair, some of the AI hawkers have recognized this problem, and have responded to it by… producing more nonsense output that their LLMs have been trained to ignore, but which will be grist to the mill for competing LLMs. These people are going to usher us into a new digital utopia? Do me a favour.

“But,” I hear a voice say, possibly only in my head, “what about the generative aspect of generative AI, Steve? For you cannot deny that LLMs have produced utterances which have never been uttered before. Combinations of words that have never occurred in all of previous history! Is this not genuine creativity at work?”

So let me get back to my student days. It’s almost traditional for young men, away from home for the first time, to fall into bad company. In my case, this was the Junularo Esperantista Skota, or the Young Scottish Esperantists’ Society. (Usually abbreviated to JES, pronounced “yes”, which is also what it means in Esperanto.) Esperanto, as any fule kno, is a constructed language, devised in 1887 by L.L. Zamenhof, a Polish oculist with a visionary streak; he envisaged it as a universal second language, easy to learn (with its rational and completely regular grammar) and culturally neutral, to allow simple straightforward communication between people of all nations, and thus bring about world peace. Laudable ambitions, but doomed, because 1) Esperanto is fundamentally European in structure and vocabulary, and thus no easier than Latin or Romanian to people from outside the Indo-European language family, and 2) cultural neutrality was never going to happen, because a language is nothing without a culture, and by the time Esperanto had its own original literature and its own native speakers9, it certainly had a culture of its own – and what a culture it was, given that (as a fellow JESano admitted to me once) the average Esperantist is the sort of person who, if Esperanto ever did become a universal language, would immediately go off to learn Volapük10.

What has this to do with Artificial Intelligence? Well, in my second year at Edinburgh, we had to do a project (well, a number of projects, but I’m only concerned with one, here.) So I, having mastered (as I thought) phrase structure diagrams, Prolog, and Esperanto, decided to put all these things together and write a Prolog program that generated grammatical11 sentences of Esperanto.

And do you know what? Maybe I had mastered that lot, because I got the darn thing to work. And, in the fullness of time, it produced an utterance of such grandeur, such majesty, such awe-inspiring grandiloquence that I myself (as you can see) was lost for words. I had to express myself in graphic art instead, producing a commemorative illustration that I have tried to reproduce herewith:-

Which, for all you speakers of manky old-fashioned languages out there, translates as “The large green aadvark sings to the brick.”

Why was I so gobsmacked by this? Well, because you could search the corpus of Esperanto literature (up to the early 1980s) without finding that sentence; nor could I imagine any way it might come up in normal conversation, not even the ones we used to have at JES. So I would bet good money (if I had any) that that sentence had never been uttered before my program output it. Genuine machine creativity!

So. Was this inspired by the muses? Did the divine spark of creativity, that which moved Milton and Shakespeare to bring forth their masterpieces, also inhere in my shonky little Prolog program that I wrote in about a month while drunk on phrase structure diagrams, backtracking, and Gaymer’s Old English?

Or is it, perhaps, just possible that there is rather more to human creativity than the mindless working-through of allowable permutations?12

I rather suspect there is. And I further suspect that the techbros and the LLM enthusiasts have no idea how to do it. I’m not saying it can’t be done – I don’t know that. What I am saying is that we are a lot further away from it, if it is possible, than current hype would have you believe.

I will stick out my neck a little bit here, and opine that, if it can be done, neural networks aren’t going to be the way. Neural networking is a valuable tool in actual, productive, AI work, it’s something that has produced useful results. But I suspect that trying to mimic the neuroplasticity of the human brain on a platform that is completely different in structure and operation – well, it might be possible eventually, but you’d be hard pressed to get it to do anything else useful. It’s like aeroplanes: we didn’t get them working properly until we realized the wings didn’t have to flap like a bird’s.

So. If “Generative AI” isn’t meaningfully generative, and isn’t actually intelligent (it’s artificial, though, I will grant it that) then what is it actually good for?

Not much, it turns out. LLMs are pretty good at faking things, but their output is hopelessly full of errors when you actually look at it. Because LLMs predict what’s statistically likely to be found in a given text, it’s good at faking things that follow a particular format. Trouble is, it’s easy enough to make up things that follow a format, less easy to make them make sense. I know plenty of formats, myself, and I can make up, say, a chemical formula like Kr2Fe3(OH)2 or a legal citation like R v Nudgely [1959] KB 113, and they look perfectly convincing, don’t they? Unless you know anything at all about chemistry, or law.

Law is one of the first things to come up, when you think about LLM errors, because legal documents tend to have a very constrained format, so they’re easy for the model to predict. So, lawyers started to use the chatbots to generate case filings and such. And the chatbots happily produced things that looked like case filings, and any non-lawyer would agree. After all, who worries whether all those case citations are real cases, or if they actually support whatever argument you’re making? – It turns out that’s not a rhetorical question, and the answer is judges.

Similarly, cooking recipes all have a list of ingredients and a list of steps, so the chatbots can fake those, too. It takes a human being to determine if the results are even remotely edible. One example cropped up, fairly early on, of a book offering 2000 recipes safe for diabetics. I hope that no diabetics put too much trust in this one, although there was a bit of a giveaway when the (AI produced) cover described it as a “Coobook”. (AI book covers are one of the weak points, because the AI “artist” has a terrible time deciding if the letters of the title are actually letters or just random decorative elements.)

All sorts of things have predictable formats, and AI has been proposed as a replacement for humans in many of them, and it’s never a good idea. Air Canada found this out the hard way, when a customer asked about a refund policy and its chatbot gave an answer based on what certainly looked like a refund policy, but wasn’t the actual one the airline was using. Studies of AI use in computer programming have shown, consistently, that human programmers spend more time correcting the chatbots’ mistakes than they would in writing the code all by themselves.

This sort of thing, of course, has the potential to do real harm. Care plans for seniors can be chatbot generated, but of course the chatbot has no knowledge of the actual patient and their needs, and its plans may be dangerously inappropriate. The legal complications of AI-generated case filings or AI-generated policies are obvious and costly. If you wind up following an AI recipe that says, say, mix half a cup of milk, twelve cans of tuna and 500 grams of brown sugar, bake for 13 minutes at 200º C and leave to age for six weeks, your health might suffer whether you’re diabetic or not13. And, in this age of misinformation and disinformation, getting your news from a chatbot is not going to keep you up to date with reality – which may be a problem, if (say) your news feed tells you that the outskirts of Los Angeles are a wonderful place for a holiday right now.

There is, I suppose, one actual, valid, use case. If you want something with a predictable format, and one for which fact-checking is completely irrelevant – well, you could certainly get a chatbot to turn out any number of newspaper opinion columns, at least from some opinion-column writers. No, “Generative AI” cannot replace genuine human expertise. No, it cannot replace genuine human creativity. But I am not the only person to observe that it can, in fact, replace Boris Johnson14. Since I think Boris Johnson could be more usefully replaced by an empty space, I don’t think this is much of a win for AI.

So, we’re being sold a model for generative AI that is, at best, a Boris Johnson simulator. And it’s being sold to us by people who really believe (or really want to believe) that it is much, much more: that it is genuine expertise and genuine creativity in a can, ready to replace all those tedious and expensive humans who insist on knowing things and being able to make things – especially those tedious humans who keep insisting that the pure and brilliant vision of our billionnaire overlords needs to be constrained by actual facts. OK, maybe right now it will tell you that there are four Ns in “mayonnaise” or that eating small rocks is good for you, but these are mere teething troubles. Just needs working some details out, that’s all. Like the mechanical men of the 1930s.

There’s plenty of fallout from this situation. We’ve already seen how relying on chatbots’ output can get you sued, or hospitalized. And the implementation of this model of AI has harmful consequences outside the scope of its users, too. Graphic artists and illustrators – never exactly in the top-earning category – are having to compete with half-assed AI imagery. Independent authors (such as myself) are – well, chatbots cannot write stories, that takes things they can’t do, but that hasn’t stopped a deluge of AI-generated slush hitting publishers (see previous commentary here), and actual human beings are having a hard time keeping their heads above it. Advertising copywriting is a soul-destroying job, but it is also a job which keeps food on writers’ tables, unless they have been replaced by chatbots (who will, sooner or later, wind up costing their users a lot of money, when they make specific claims about a product or service that turn out not to be true – as Air Canada found out.) Translators are having to compete with machines, even though good translation requires an understanding of nuance, connotation, context, and shades of meaning – all of which mean nothing at all to a chatbot.

There is, too, the staggering environmental cost of these things – it takes a server farm the size of a small town, consuming enough power (and water, for cooling systems) to supply quite a large town, to tell you that Kenya starts with a K instead of a K, or draw you a picture of a woman with 86DDDD breasts and eighteen fingers. Although, as I write, the AI hype world is reeling from the revelation that the Chinese have come up with an AI engine that requires much less in the way of resources – it still produces useless crap, of course, but it’s significantly cheaper useless crap. Our AI-wielding overlords are much put out, because they reckon the Chinese system has scraped up some of their intellectual property to do its stuff. That scuffling noise you hear in the background? It’s the sound of all the writers whose work was used without permission for AI training, all trying to get the world’s smallest violin.

AI is something lots of people would like to believe in – including me; let’s face it, I’ve read many of the same SF novels as Elon Musk. But it’s not here yet, and we’re a long way from it. But it is all too easy to believe that it is here. Not so much because of all the hype – aggressive though it is; I’m old and cynical enough to believe that you can’t trust the likes of Musk or Sam Altman as far as you could spit a rat into a headwind. The problem is our treacherous but well-meaning brains, conning us into seeing humanity and consciousness where there is none. Your lawyer drafting AI filings isn’t thinking “Oh, nobody reads this stuff anyway, I can send in any old rubbish.” No, that lawyer is thinking that the chatbot who sounds all so human… will understand what he needs, will test its arguments and check its references before coming out with its answers. That lawyer is relying on the common sense, the wisdom, the understanding of the little man inside the computer.

The little man who isn’t there.

The difference is that an interpreted language like BASIC generates the binary code one line at a time, whereas a compiled language like, say, Pascal reads the whole program at once and generates a complete version of the binary code from that. Pascal and BASIC are both very old languages indeed, and computing has rather Moved On from here. The main advantage of an interpreted language is that you can watch it go wrong in real time; a compiled language spits a “COMPILATION ERROR” back at you when it’s finished, and you have to dig through the program all over again to find what it is you’ve screwed up. Modern development tools will at least highlight their best guess as to the source of the error, although the process of fixing it often devolves into a lengthy and soul-destroying game of Spot The Typo. Since modern computing involves a lot of object-oriented design, not to mention linking to precompiled software libraries that may or may not even be on the same machine as the main program, it’s safe to say that interpreted languages have rather fallen by the wayside. 2024 Reading

Well, everyone else seems to be doing it… so, here are some books that have stuck with me over the past year.

Shannon Chakraborty, The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi – Chakraborty has always been a writer to watch, and this Middle-Eastern fantasy take on a retired pirate getting the old gang back together for one last caper is gleefully fun all the way through.

Anna Smith Spark, A Sword of Bronze and Ashes – another one with a heroine coming out of retirement? But this is, overall, a darker, more serious story. What caught my attention in this one was Anna Smith Sparks’s strong, vivid, and distinctly individual prose style; it’s a book you can read for the pleasure of the sentences alone.

Silvia Moreno Garcia, Silver Nitrate – SMG is always value for money, and this spooky tale of a film reel that Man Was Not Meant To Know shows her firing on all cylinders.

Tananarive Due, The Reformatory – the young son of a civil rights agitator is sent to a reform school where the malicious ghosts aren’t anywhere near the worst horror on display. This is a powerfully written horror-thriller set amid the injustices of Jim Crow-era America; so tense I had to read it in small doses.

Aliette de Bodard, Navigational Entanglements – four hapless apprentices to space-navigators’ guilds in de Bodard’s Xuya setting have to deal with the challenges of unsympathetic bosses, impossible deadlines, sinister space monsters, and – worst of all – communicating with each other. Lively and engaging as always.

Adam Roberts, Lake of the Dead – mind-blowing stuff from the maestro of high-concept space opera here, as a voyage to the edge of a black hole has terrifying consequences. Roberts is great at making you think while you’re enjoying yourself. (But why isn’t he working on his trilogy? The This came out in 2022, but we still don’t have a publication date for The That, and we haven’t heard a peep about The Other.)

Kelly and Zach Weinersmith, A City on Mars – an in-depth look at the colonization of outer space and why it isn’t going to happen any time soon. The Weinersmiths are clearly sympathetic to the idea of manned space exploration, but being sympathetic doesn’t mean you get to turn a blind eye to the very substantial challenges that need to be faced.

Simon Winchester, Krakatoa: The Day the World Exploded -a deep delve, here, into the context and the consequences of the 1883 eruption of Krakatoa. Fascinating, well-written, and illuminating. (No, I don’t just read genre stuff.)

Ayesha Manazir Siddiqi, The Centre – this one just hit my particular sweet spots, as it’s a horror-thriller about applied linguistics. The eponymous Centre can take you from complete ignorance of a language to native-speaker level fluency in a few weeks. But what is its secret method? The answer is horrifying, and not just because it violates the Chomskyite paradigm of language acquisition.

Russ Jones, Four Chancellors and a Funeral – Jones follows up on The Decade in Tory with another piece of scathing humour, castigating Boris Johnson, Liz Truss, Rishi Sunak and their assorted hangers-on and partners in crime. The Tory government comes in for some very harsh criticism indeed, and every bit of it is thoroughly deserved, and Jones manages to be very funny with it.

Hmm. So that’s ten, then. Is it a top ten? Probably not. Catch me in a different frame of mind, I’d probably come up with ten others. But each one of the above was new to me in 2024, and rewarded me for reading it – which is all you can really ask of a book, I think.

How the Other Half Lives

This is spilling out of a discussion over on File 770 (item 4 on the scroll), which in turn derived partly from Charles Stross’s “We’re Sorry we Created the Torment Nexus”. It also ties in, of course, to the ongoing “was John W. Campbell a fascist?” non-debate (because people who say no are not changing their minds, ever.)

“Fascist”, of course, is one of those terms linguisticians call “snarl words”, where the negative connotations have pretty much obscured the original usage. In the literal sense, Campbell was never a member of Mussolini’s Partito Nazionale Fascista, so, no, he was not literally a Fascist. But by that definition, neither was Adolf Hitler, so that’s not really getting us anywhere. Fascism, as a political philosophy, is a bastard child of the aristocratic principle; its thesis is that we are all in the service of the State, and that within the State there are elites who have a natural right to rule, and those who are not of the elite should just accept the orders of their betters. Non-elites who go around questioning the elite, or doing things like suggesting alternative ways of living, are clearly subversives bent on undermining the proper order, and must be neutralized in the interests of the public good. It doesn’t take long to notice that this belief rather lends itself to concepts like racism (because obviously the elites will have consistent characteristics, such as skin colour), totalitarianism (for the public good, the non-elite masses must be strictly controlled) and the summary elimination of subversives (the preservation of the public good is more important than trivia such as human rights or due process.)

This sort of political philosophy breaks out in a number of different ways. In Germany in the 1930s, of course, it expressed itself in National Socialism under Hitler. More interestingly, from the Golden Age SF reader’s point of view, it expressed itself in the USA as the Technocracy Movement, which held that politicians and businessmen were no good at running the state, and public policy should be set by panels of scientific experts instead. This was a movement just like the other authoritarian parties of the time; it had a Leader (Howard Scott), it had its own colour of shirts, it had a logo adopted from Asian mythology. You could envisage an alternate history in which the Weimar Republic got a Franklin D. Roosevelt analogue who got its economy back on track, the USA didn’t, the resulting social unrest threw up a charismatic Technocrat leader (which wouldn’t have been Howard Scott, who was a terrible public speaker)… and World War II started round about on schedule, when the USA came into direct conflict with the British Empire as the Technocrats attempted their Anschluß with Canada. And there would quite definitely have been a Molotov-Hull pact, pitting the USA and the USSR against the old colonial empires – at least until the Americans launched Operation Redbeard, attacking Russia through Alaska, leading to meat-grinder urban warfare around Vladivostok (subsequently renamed Stalingrad), and the collapse of the US economy… and there would be ample room to blame “financiers” and “rootless cosmopolitans” for the failures of the technocrats… and, today, the yin-yang mandala would arouse the same feelings that the swastika does in our world, and solemn-faced visitors would look up at the “Work Will Set You Free” motto on the iron gates of the death camp at Austin, TX. But I digress.

The idea that the state should be run by the people best qualified to do it… seems like the sort of truism you couldn’t dream of contradicting, until you start asking awkward questions like “who decides who’s best qualified?” It is worth noting that the UK, since 2010, has been run by the “right sort of people”, who came from the right sort of background, went to the right sort of school (Eton, Winchester) and/or the right university (Oxford) and were therefore presumed to have the right sort of qualifications for government. It is safe to say, what with the collapse in public services, the decline in the UK’s wealth and influence due to the self-inflicted wound of Brexit, the tens of thousands of homeless people, the millions sunk into destitution, the fall of average living standards to parity with Eastern Slovenia (and dropping), the thousands of avoidable Covid deaths, the tens of billions of public money lost to fraud and corruption, the highest tax burden since the Second World War, the tripling of national debt… yes, it is safe to say that their track record has been less than stellar. (Feel free to add in anything I’ve missed out. I know there’s a lot more.)

But were Golden Age SF writers in general, and John W. Campbell Jr. in particular, happy with elitism? Oh, you bet they were. The Gernsbackian ideal, as exemplified in Gernsback’s own ridiculous novel Ralph 124C41+, was a homogeneous, rationally-planned society in which government, if it existed at all, was strictly subordinated to the scientific elite – in the eponymous Ralph’s case, the “plus men”, entitled to that + sign on their names, whose unfettered experimentation led to an endless round of fresh discoveries and scientific benefits for the general populace. And you can’t throw a brick in Campbell-era SF without hitting an omni-competent super-science hero with world-transforming insights and the steely determination to push aside bureaucratic meddling and Get Things Done. Campbell himself regarded Astounding as not just a science fiction magazine, but a proving ground for the ideas that would shape the world of tomorrow. And he had plenty of sympathy from SF fans, who were happy to believe that their time would come, and they would be in the vanguard of the new elite. Granted, not many fans took it as far as the rather alarming Claude Degler, but if you said “fans are slans” at any fannish gathering of the times, you would see more than one head nodding in approval.

(A horrible thought occurred to me, in relation to the alternative history scenario above. Howard Scott was a lousy public speaker, but John Campbell was much more articulate… and generally in sympathy with the Technocrat ideals. John Campbell as the American Führer is an upsetting enough thought, but… what if it turned out to be one of Campbell’s stable of writers, instead? Specifically, a certain writer with a talent for plausible balderdash, one who had the highest possible opinion of his own abilities, one who saw the advantages inherent in being the unquestioned leader of a movement? ”Heil Hitler!” is already a phrase to chill the blood, but I have a feeling “Hail Hubbard!” would have been much, much worse.)

But anyway. Golden Age SF loves its super-scientists, super-cops, and super-soldiers, and more often than not it emphasizes their points of view – these guys tend to be the sympathetic protagonists in their stories. Partly, this is down to the “SF as a fantasy of political agency” thing which I talked about here at wearisome length (and without crediting C.J. Cherryh, who actually coined the phrase); partly it’s simple narrative convenience, in that it’s easier to write stories about the movers and the shakers, rather than the moved and the shaken. This does, however, rather have the problem of reducing most of humanity to lay figures standing in the background, applauding Our Heroes on cue and otherwise staying out of things. (Of course, by Campbell’s own literary theory, this is actually a good thing.) We get to see a lot of Ralph 124C41+, as he goes about being brilliant and extolling the virtues of super-science; we don’t get the viewpoints of the ordinary people of Ralph’s world, who seem to exist only to cheer on the efforts of Ralph and his fellow “plus” men. You have to wonder whether such uniform adulation is entirely realistic. Are there no people in this world who would rather take a bike to work, instead of zipping around on electric roller skates? No people who would rather eat solid food than suck pre-masticated slurry from a hose? No residents of New York who get slightly peeved when one of Ralph’s brilliant experiments overloads the power grid and plunges the whole city into darkness?

Well, if there are, they’re likely to keep their opinions to themselves. Because speaking up is likely to be… problematic. People are going to say things like “How dare you criticize the ‘plus’ men? Don’t you realize that their super-science is devoted to improving our lives? Ingrate. Weirdo. Deviant. Subversive.”

Neither fascism nor Golden Age SF are big on alternatives. The non-elite masses, after all, cannot be expected to cope with the difficulty of choosing between two or more acceptable alternatives. Moreover, if you have a number of choices open, you allow for the possibility that the ruling elite might make the wrong choice, which clearly cannot be allowed to happen. As part of my great Unknown reviewing project, I covered John W. Campbell’s only fiction contribution to his own magazine, here – this rather exemplifies the problem, because the “Invisible Ones” who are its designated villains don’t actually do anything villainous… except for presenting alternatives of which John W. Campbell does not approve.

(A side note: Mark Clifton and Frank Riley’s They’d Rather Be Right is widely regarded as the worst novel ever to win the Hugo Award, at least by people who haven’t read The Wanderer. But, in among the cardboard characters and lacklustre prose, there is at least the germ of a decent idea. Given access to a piece of super-science that greatly boosts your intellect, restores your body to youth and perfect fitness, and makes sexy redheads forget to put any clothes on… some people are still going to stick with the old-fashioned way of doing things, because that’s more comfortable than the personal transformation this gadget involves. By the standards of the Golden Age, this is pretty insightful stuff.)

Presenting alternatives is not a wise choice in an authoritarian elitist state. Even if you, yourself, are a member of the elite, deviating too much or too often from the general consensus is not likely to win you any brownie points with your peers – more likely, the consequences will feature phrases like “mandatory leave of absence”, “rest cure”, “re-education”, “public renunciation” and “icepick through the skull.” If you are not a member of the elite, then criticizing your betters (even by implication)… isn’t going to end well. And, if you happen to be, as it were, intrinsically alternative – by virtue of skin colour, or sexuality, or the configuration of your genitals, or whatever – well, the best thing to do, in this case, is keep your head well down, say nothing, and pray that the elite doesn’t notice you.

And Golden Age SF does, very much, give you the viewpoint of the elite, not the masses. We are introduced to these super-science, super-heroic protagonists, we explore the world through their POV, and, by and large, we sympathise with them. By and large. Sometimes they are just too unpleasant to be sympathetic; I found the Designated Heroes in Clifford Simak’s deservedly neglected early novel Empire to be absolutely appalling, and the justly famous Cora Buhlert is prone to referring to the protagonist of “Doc” Smith’s Skylark series as “the war criminal Richard Seaton”, which isn’t unfair, given the number of genocides Seaton perpetrates in that series.

Speaking of E.E. “Doc” Smith… I’ve had enough of picking on Ralph 124C41+, it feels too much like kicking a cripple (and I say that as a cripple). So, let’s look at a Golden Age touchstone of arguably higher quality, shall we? Let’s find out what it looks like from the proles’ point of view.

This rugged and manly fellow is Kimball “Kim” Kinnison, the eponymous Grey Lensman of the title, and the hero for most of Smith’s Lensman series. This series comprised four novels (Galactic Patrol, Grey Lensman, Second Stage Lensmen and Children of the Lens) serialized in Astounding between 1937 and 1948; it would subsequently spawn two prequels (Triplanetary and First Lensman) and a sort of set-in-the-same-universe spin-off (The Vortex Blasters, also known as Masters of the Vortex, at least when expanded to novel length.) Kim Kinnison starts out as the hero for the first three books, and is still in Children of the Lens, though rather pushed aside by his brood of Third Stage Lensman kids.

For those of you blessedly unfamiliar with the whole Lensman saga – well, the Lensmen are the top echelon of the Galactic Patrol, a cross between the space police and the military. That thing on Kim’s wrist that looks like a radioactive Rolex is his Lens, a telepathic jewel made by the mysterious inhabitants of the planet Arisia, which gives him all sorts of handy psychic abilities, and also serves as an infallible means of identification – a Lens is bonded to one Lensman only; if he takes it off (Lensmen are always “he”, with only one exception), it loses its glow, and is rapidly fatal to anyone else who touches it.

By the start of Grey Lensman, Kim is already a Grey Lensman, also known as an Unattached Lensman. This does not mean he’s single (sorry, ladies!), he’s in a will-they-won’t-they romance with the gorgeous Clarrissa MacDougall, more of her anon. What it does mean is that he is detached from the regular duties and the command structure of the Galactic Patrol; he is free to investigate whatever he pleases, and to command whatever resources he needs to get things done. He is also already a Second Stage Lensman, one of exactly four individuals in two galaxies who have been allowed a second trip to Arisia to take a course in advanced Lensing. His psychic “sense of perception” allows him to see in total darkness and through solid objects, and his powers of mind control can make a helpless puppet of virtually anyone. He can revise or erase memories, can generate psychic illusions, and can even kill with the force of his mind alone. All these things come with his Second Stage training; he has a lot of other resources besides, we wouldn’t want to stint the lad, after all.

Some people might worry about a superman super-cop who’s accountable to no one and can demand anything he wants. Might he not be tempted to abuse the position? Fortunately, the mystic Arisians, masters of the mental arts, do not bestow the Lens on anyone who shows even the potential for this sort of thing. The Lens is an absolute guarantee that its wearer is 100% sea-green incorruptible. So that’s all right, then!

To be honest, I’ve always rather liked Kim Kinnison. He’s got a sort of gung-ho charm going for him, and his “aw-shucks-I-ain’t-nothin’-special” demeanour manages to offset his gigantic stack of superpowers, somewhat. And, despite all those powers, he doesn’t entirely get things his own way – he meets the lovely Clarrissa when she’s nursing him through an extended hospital stay, and it’s not the only one he gets. He is easy to sympathize with, especially when you’re about thirteen. You can happily cheer him on as he sets out to rid the galaxy (and, later, another galaxy) of space pirates, crime bosses, sinister drug cartels, and alien tyrants.

I would say he’s “making the galaxy safe for democracy”, but….

We actually don’t learn much about the governmental structure of Smith’s setting. Politicians are strictly limited in scope; there doesn’t seem to be an elected president or a house of representatives in Smith’s Civilization. (The opposition, the dastardly Boskonians, we do see something of – basically, it’s the Mafia.) At the end of Second Stage Lensmen, when the final head of the Boskonians has been unmasked and destroyed (or so they think, there’s another book to go yet), Kim is made Director of the Second Galaxy, as in, yes, ruler of an entire galaxy full of inhabited planets (some of them, at this point, a lot less inhabited than they used to be.) There’s no public consultation involved; Kim’s simply handed the job by Port Admiral Haynes, the head honcho of the Galactic Patrol… who, come to think of it, is similarly unencumbered by accountability. The system appears to work well enough, at least economically – Haynes, in an infodump early in the series, explains how the rate of income tax is steadily being reduced, to prevent too much money, as he puts it, accumulating in the coffers of the Galactic Patrol. Which does rather imply that the Patrol both sets and collects the tax – and also that Civilization is doing pretty good in a strictly material sense, since all the Patrol’s superdreadnoughts, planetary fortresses, dirigible planets, planet-sized masses of antimatter, and exotic high-tech weapons of mass destruction can’t come cheap.

(The prequel First Lensman expands the setting a little bit…. Virgil Samms, the First Lensman of the title, established the Solarian Patrol, which would later become the Galactic Patrol, along with a separate Solarian Council, which one might think expanded its role in the same way. We don’t get to see anything much of the Council in action, but we do know one thing about it – its members wield huge authority, so they’d better be 100% guaranteed incorruptible, right? And how can we guarantee that? That’s right, to be a Council member, you have to be a Lensman.)

In fact, it appears throughout the series that the Patrol does pretty much whatever it bloody likes. If the Patrol wants to co-opt the entire output of the sun into a single beam of total destruction, they just go ahead and do it. If Port Admiral Haynes decides a department store building is actually a Boskonian spaceship in disguise, he can just send in a task force to take it out. Nearby residents can only comply with the evacuation orders, and wonder gloomily whether their home or business insurance covers volatilization in coruscating beams of incandescent destruction or comminution by the almost inconceivable force of explosive duodecaplylatomate. (No, no, “Doc” Smith doesn’t really write like that! – I’m toning it down quite a bit.)

Now, we, sitting in our ringside seats right next to the narrative, know that the department store is a Boskonian spaceship… but the same insight is not afforded to the people queuing wearily for the evacuation buses. Are any of them possibly unhappy at the thought of leaving their homes and their livelihoods, to face the very likely prospect of returning to find nothing but a red-hot hole in the ground? Well, if they are, they’d do well to keep it to themselves. I mean, who would object to the destruction of a Boskonian spaceship, except… another Boskonian? After all, the criminal tendrils of Boskone reach into everywhere. Anyone you meet, anyone you see, even your nearest and dearest may be secretly in the pay of the enemies of Civilization! Well, except Lensmen, of course. You can trust Lensmen, you know you can, because, well, they’ve got a Lens.

The Lens isn’t just a badge of office, though. It also gives even its less qualified wearers telepathic powers, good enough to read your mind and probe your memories. Is there any regulation of this ability? Not that we see in the books. So, Joe Q. Citizen of Civilization must live with the knowledge that his private thoughts are not private at all. Also, while Kim Kinnison gets his “sense of perception” from his Second Stage training, there are plenty of non-human Lensmen who are born with this ability. Privacy is pretty much dead in this setting. Nothing is secret from the Galactic Patrol, at least. (OK, the setting does feature artificial thought screens that can block telepathy. Kim Kinnison is seen several times circumventing those in clever ways. Besides, you know who uses thought screen technology? Boskonians, that’s who.)

We don’t get to see much of Civilization’s judicial process. Grey Lensmen like Kim can circumvent it all anyway – one of his first tests of his Second Stage powers involves him reading the minds of two men, to determine which one is guilty of a horrible crime. Kim not only identifies the culprit, but conjures up a psychic illusion, visible only to the culprit, which causes him to expire on the spot. (Did counsel for the defence not lodge an objection, you ask? To which the answer is: counsel for the what?) One gets the impression that the normal procedure isn’t all that much different. Boskonian “pirates” always fight to the last man, because they know surrender means “death in the lethal chambers of the Patrol.” This policy of executing all Boskonians does have a couple of exceptions; Dessa desPlaines gets off with having her memory erased and her personality reconstructed by Kim, and Ilona Potter is let off entirely. It is just a coincidence that they are both ladies with nice legs, I guess. And, at the end of Second Stage Lensmen, the whole world of Thrale is excused the death penalty as a gesture of goodwill (except for the rather substantial number of military personnel and politicians who’ve already been killed.) The Thralians are humanoid, naturally. Their sister planet and partner in crime, Onlo, is not earthlike and is inhabited by strange alien creatures that do not have nice legs. Correction: was inhabited.

One final detail, a small one but a telling one. In that cover illustration, Kim is wearing the uniform of a Grey Lensman, which is, naturally enough, grey. What do ordinary Lensmen’s uniforms look like? Well, they wear the “space-black and silver” uniform of the Galactic Patrol. In fact, the series starts out with Kim and the rest of his graduating class marching off, in their space-black and silver uniforms, to the final Lens-giving ceremony. This scene was published in 1937. Where else, in 1937, could you find stern-faced and zealous young men marching in black uniforms with silver trim? Much is made of the volume of the music during this passing-out parade; me, I think they only turned it up that loud to drown out the sound of Leni Riefenstahl coming.

So, we get to see this setting from the viewpoint of Kim Kinnison and his mates being strong and brave and heroic, fighting beastly crooks and monsters in a series of thrilling adventures. We do not get to see it from the viewpoint of the ordinary citizens, struggling to think nice safe thoughts while a capricious military complex rearranges their lives at a whim, knowing that if they even think about being unhappy, they risk being labelled an enemy of the state, and the guys in black and silver uniforms will come for them, and that will be that, no appeal, no mercy.

“But, Steve,” I hear you cry, “you’re forgetting that they do have oversight! The ancient, mystic and wise Arisians will surely not let their gift of the Lens be abused!”

Ah, yes. Them.

Let’s take another look at Clarrissa MacDougall, and why not? She’s gorgeous. Like so many female characters of the time, she’s basically just a trophy for the hero, but “Doc” Smith at least made his ladies good-quality trophies. Richard Seaton’s partner Dorothy is a virtuoso violinist who can hold a whole planet spellbound with her playing, she’s tough enough to stand up to (some, at least) of the dastardly villains they encounter, and at one point, when Seaton and his crew have projected themselves into a four-dimensional world, it’s Dorothy who works out how to sort out their jangled perceptions so they can function. Similarly, Clarrissa MacDougall is an experienced front-line military nurse, physically and mentally courageous, highly skilled and highly intelligent, frank and forthright in her opinions… she is, in fact, the only woman on whom the Arisians confer a Lens, and by the end of the series she is Unattached and Second Stage as well. And, as previously noted, she’s a looker. In fact, she has the same “red-bronze-auburn hair” and “gold-flecked, tawny eyes” as her ancestor, First Lensman Virgil Samms….

Port Admiral Haynes and his crony (and Clarrissa’s boss) Surgeon General Lacy both agree that Kim and Clarrissa are a perfect match, and devote a lot of time and effort into throwing the two of them together, in a not at all creepy and completely not inappropriate way. Haynes even goes so far as to spy on the couple’s intimate moments. ”Doc” Smith does not actually tell us that Haynes is using his “spy-beam” one-handed, with his trousers round his ankles, but I think we may be excused for drawing some inferences, here. Anyway, the two do, eventually, get together, and Haynes and Lacy (the Stadler and Waldorf of the Galactic Patrol) congratulate themselves on a job well done. If only they’d known how much help they’d been getting.

Because Kim and Clarrissa are not just two implausibly wonderful young people. They are the culmination of a selective breeding programme, initiated by the Arisians, which has been producing heroic Kinnison males and hot people with red-bronze-auburn hair and gold-flecked tawny eyes since at least the time of the sinking of Atlantis. For millennia, the Arisians have been secretly nudging Kim and Clarrissa’s ancestors to marry, or at least procreate with, the right kind of person to foster their superior genes. And, sometimes, taking great pains to keep the bloodlines from merging prematurely – there is a subplot in First Lensman about Virgil Samms and the heroic Kinnison of his generation trying to get their two kids (Virgilia and Jack) together… and failing, because the Time Is Not Ripe for such a development. But the Time Is Ripe for Kim and Clarrissa, the first two human beings with the capacity for Second Stage Lensmanning, and the prospective parents of the glorious new Third Stage generation.

The Arisians, aware of the importance of having backup plans, have been pursuing similar breeding programmes on three other worlds, producing three other beings at Second Stage level. But, with Kim and Clarrissa turning out so well, there is no need for the backups, so Worsel of Velantia, Tregonsee of Rigel IV, and Nadreck of Palain VII will never meet their genetically programmed perfect counterparts. Or, as I put it more crudely, once, Kim Kinnison has inadvertently cock-blocked his three best mates.

“But, Steve,” you may say, “although the Arisians’ programme is a bit, well, eugenics-y… all right, nakedly and shamelessly eugenics-y… but the end result is a psychic superman with unimpeachable ethics, so maybe it’s, well, sort of justifiable? I mean, if the Arisians are developing the Lensmen as a force for good, well….”

To which I might reply, “But are they?”

The extent to which the Arisians have been gaslighting the whole of Civilization is partially revealed in Children of the Lens, and made more explicit in the prequel novels. The main body of the Lensman series involves a lengthy hunt for the heads of the criminal Boskonian empire, where, time after time, the principal villains are defeated in spectacular acts of destruction, only for it to be revealed that they were just puppets dancing on the strings of some other, more powerful, villains. The Galactic Patrol, even in its climactic moments, never gets to find out about the ultimate Man Behind The Man, the godfather shoggoths of the planet Eddore.

(“Doc” Smith isn’t xenophobic in the way that H.P. Lovecraft was – Worsel, Tregonsee, and Nadreck are all radically non-human in appearance – but he does seem to have it in for shapeless or amoeboid life-forms. The Eddorians are formless, sexless, reproduce by division, and are Always Chaotic Evil. And, in the Skylark series, the chlorine-breathing Chlorans are also amoeboid, and very unpleasant… and Smith sees fit to wipe them out, to the very last blob, including – in the final volume, Skylark DuQuesne – an entire galaxy’s worth of Chlorans, annihilated in what has to be the most spectacular act of genocide that even Smith could come up with. Some day, I really must get around to a compare-and-contrast piece on Smith and Lovecraft – they have so many similar tendencies, while also having whole different sets of vices and virtues.)

Smith’s first prequel, Triplanetary, is an unlovely fix-up, the main body of which is a short space opera that looks like it’s been hastily retrofitted to fit the Lensman continuity. But it does have one heck of an opening line: Two thousand million or so years ago two galaxies were colliding; or, rather, were passing through each other. Smith was relying on a now outmoded theory of planetary formation, whereby planets originate when two stars pass close by each other, and gravity draws out some of the substance of each, which then coalesces into little planet-sized droplets. We know rather more about planetary formation and galactic collisions now than we did then, but that’s hardly Smith’s fault. Anyway. Such astronomical near-misses are unlikely in a single galaxy, but the interpenetration of the Milky Way and the Second Galaxy, or Lundmark’s Nebula, created thousands or millions of them. To the Arisians, this meant the possibility of thousands of new life forms appearing, which could one day be moulded into civilizations capable of appreciating the Arisians’ perspectives. To the Eddorians, this meant the possibility of thousands of new life forms appearing, which could be enslaved by superior Eddorian science and willpower.

The Arisians are superior to the Eddorians in mental science, so they can operate without the Eddorians noticing them. However, the Eddorians have been practicing social Darwinism for billions of years, and the ones who’ve survived are very, very hard to kill. To wipe out the Eddorians down to the very last blob, the Arisians (who find this concept agreeable, which says something about them in my opinion) have to craft a psychic super-weapon, a genocide gun composed of millions of living minds, all dedicated to one tremendous effort to will the entire Eddorian species to death. Millions of whose living minds? you ask. Why, whose but the massed Lensmen of the Galactic Patrol, of course.

So. If you’re a Lensman in this setting – well, you get to go on exciting space adventures, see many wondrous new worlds, meet fascinating alien creatures, and kill them in amazing new ways. If you are not a Lensman in this setting… well, then, you are part and parcel of the military-industrial complex that keeps the Galactic Patrol running, and that is never going to change, and if you even think about trying to change it, you are likely to attract the attention of the Lensmen, who are dressed like the SS and can invade your privacy, even the privacy of your thoughts, any time they like, and if they decide you are an enemy of Civilization, you will be taken away and never heard from again. And their qualification for being Lensmen? Suitability for being a component of an alien species’s psionic weapon of mass destruction. This is assuming that you’re part of Civilization. If, because of your moral turpitude, your disgusting criminality, or your misfortune in being born on the wrong planet or in the wrong galaxy, you are part of the Eddorian realm… well, I hope for your sake that you’ve got nice legs. Because if you’re on the side of Boskone, that’s the only thing that might save you. Otherwise, well, forget about even a closed-casket funeral – when the Galactic Patrol really comes gunning for you, there isn’t going to be enough of your home planet left to bury, never mind its inhabitants.

If this is not Fascism, then it’s certainly a damn good imitation.

“But, Steve,” I hear you say, “are you not, perhaps, over-analyzing this just a tiny bit? Also, do you not think you should stop over-analyzing, take a few deep breaths, play some soothing music, and take a rest for a while, preferably somewhere with no sharp objects readily to hand?”

Well, duh. Of course I’m over-analyzing.

“Doc” Smith came by his Ph.D. perfectly honestly; he was a working scientist, an organic chemist specializing in food – he did a lot of work on baked goods, and is credited with some innovations in doughnut making. It’s the sort of work that is painstaking, methodical, and unglamourous, and Smith was, from all accounts I’ve seen, pretty good at it. At some point in his career, he worked with explosives, which may sound more exciting, but which mostly requires you to be even more painstaking and methodical, if it’s not going to become very briefly exciting. It’s not surprising, then, that in his other career as a writer, he shed the caution and the mundane detail, and escaped into slam-bang gosh-wow no-holds-barred wish-fulfilment space opera. It’s my belief that Smith knew perfectly well that the “science” in his SF was completely bogus (I’m rather less convinced that John W. Campbell realized that); things like the “Sybly White” self-parody in Children of the Lens suggest that Smith was fully aware of the quality of his own writing. It’s not meant to be serious. It’s a straightforward piece of escapism with well-defined Good Guys fighting equally well-defined Bad Guys with a maximum of spectacle, cool gadgets, and pyrotechnics. The world-building extends no further than the bits we get to see – heck, even the plot is barely there, it’s just about enough to connect one spectacular set-piece to the next one. Like many another space opera, once you start to look past the showy façade, there isn’t anything much of substance behind it. It’s not meant to be seriously analyzed.

It’s not meant to be a serious blueprint for society either. But if people genuinely want to use old pulp SF as a template for the future… well, then, you bet I’m going to over-analyze it. Because if 1930s style SF started leaking out of the pulps and into the real world, the consequences would be appalling.

The Lensman series is never going to escape into reality, fortunately. There are some fundamental problems with it, like the absence of woo-woo psychic powers and debatably altruistic Arisians to hand out amplifiers for them. Ralph 124C41+, oddly, is more plausible. (And that’s not a sentence you’re likely to see very often.) I think we can all picture some people who like to think of themselves as visionary intellectual supermen, dispensing the fruits of their mighty cogitations to the adoring proles below. And those people would probably love to be officially accountable to no one, allowed to execute all their plans without being handicapped by petty little things like ethics, and equipped with that nice little “+” sign just to show everyone that they are officially superior. (Though one of them might prefer a multiplication symbol instead.) Of course, as with the British elites who gave us Brexit, PPE fraud, collapsing public services, and all those other good things, these guys are not so much “plus” men as “double minus, see me after class” men. I’ve read a certain amount of the TESCREAL mob’s output (for my sins), and entirely too much of it is along the lines of “here are all the cool things we will do with nanotechnology/AI/aneutronic fusion/whatever, just as soon as those science peons in the laboratories get round to inventing it.” (Nanotechnology is a prime example here, with the visionaries saying things like “by 2050 at the latest, we will all have fleets of micro-miniature submarines cruising around our bodies, detecting and correcting every defective cell, so that we can enjoy perfect health and an indefinitely long lifespan,” while actual nanotechnologists are like, “hey, cool, check this out, we can make cogs now.”)

There are people out there who really want to be “plus” men, or Lensmen – or Nexialists, or slans, or psychohistorians, or homo superior, or (the war criminal) Richard Seaton. They’re not qualified, of course, because nobody is, or ever will be. The super-science heroes of the Golden Age get all the breaks an indulgent author can give them; reality is, alas, much less forgiving. And while a tiny minority get to pretend they are the masters of the world (and usually make an appalling mess in the process), the bulk of the population – which includes me and (I suspect) thee, dear reader – are nothing in their minds but lay figures, a powerless and voiceless mass in the background that is theirs to dispose of as they wish. This is just fine according to John W. Campbell’s literary theories, where the clever ideas and the people who come up with them are the only things that matter. As a background character who, nevertheless, happens to be a real live person with opinions of his own… I beg to differ.

That’s for Rememberance

So I bought a poppy to wear. A red one.

A depressing number of people – or a number of depressing people – have taken to associating this symbol with a dismal sense of jingoism. They will tell you that the red poppy commemorates all those who died in the cause of liberty and justice, or some such. Largely, they are the people who think they own patriotism, who are proud of British history despite (or because of) not really knowing any; the sort of people who would (and did) happily sell the UK’s future, its economy, its values and its people down the river, so long as they got to wave a Union Flag and look down on foreigners.

So I can’t quarrel with anyone who chooses to wear a white poppy, to try and distance themselves from all this toxic nationalism. And I’m not going to quarrel with anyone who wears no poppy at all, because, after all, why not leave the wars of the last century behind us? Their choices are not my choices, but that doesn’t make them any worse. Only different.

But I bought a red one. Because I do know some history, and I do want to remember.

You can – possibly – argue that World War II was that near-mythical thing, a “just” war. That the evils of Nazi Germany were so great that even the destruction of a war was better than letting them ravage unchecked. So you might argue that soldiers on the Allied side did, in fact, fight for liberty and justice. Though those on the Axis side died too, and in its way, that is just as much a tragedy. Even the most depraved member of the SS or the Einsatzgruppen was a human being, was some mother’s son, was a creature with many possibilities before his life was snuffed out. If they had lived, could they have turned their lives around? Is it possible for them to atone for the crimes they committed? I honestly don’t know. I do know, though, that once they were dead, they couldn’t even try.

But in any case, that’s not what the poppies are about. The poppy, as a symbol, followed the First World War. And nobody in that war died for liberty or justice. Not a single soul. World War I was a clash of imperial houses, competing with each other for money and prestige. Nobody died for liberty. They died for the interests of a morbid handful of aristocrats, families inbred and interbred, arrogating to themselves the ownership of whole nations. They died in a glorified family squabble, an argument about How Their Kevin Got The Fish Knives Nana Always Said Would Go To Our Sharon that somehow got out of hand and chewed up twenty million lives.

And when it was finally over, the survivors looked at the carnage and the devastation, and very sensibly said, Never again.

The poppies grew among the battlefields in Belgium, and they were a symbol in two ways. The red of the flowers was symbolic of the oceans of blood that were spilled. But the fact of the flowers, their simple presence as they grew amid the desolation and destruction, spoke of the resilience of life, of the renewal of hope. And that was the real message of the poppy. To remember the bloodshed, and to hope for better things.

So that’s why I bought, and why I wear, a red poppy. Not out of paltry nationalism. Not to celebrate some transient victory. I wear it in rememberance. In solidarity with the dead, all the dead, all those lives cut short, all those possibilities unrealized. Because the awful cost of war must be remembered. I wear it to say, I remember. And, also, Never again.

The Escape of a Polar Bear in Dundee

After the manner of Sir William Topaz McGonagall (Poet and Tragedian), with deep apologies to him and the estimable Mr. Coates.

It is not a common thing, as you will all surely agree,
That a polar bear should ravage in the streets of fair Dundee.
And yet such an occurence did indeed eventuate,
Upon the seventh day of November in the year 1878.

For it chanced to pass that earlier in that year 1878,
A whaling ship was sailing in the Arctic Davis Strait,
And as they rode upon the sea, the sailors beheld two bears,
And they set out at once to catch the animals and make them theirs.

And once they had the bears, they named one of them Bruin,
Without the least notion that he would break free and cause ruin,
And upon their return they sold the bears to a certain Mr. Woods,
Who rubbed his hands in glee when he took delivery of the goods.

For he had a plan, that the bears he would exhibit,
And for a fee, the public could gaze at them ad libet.,
It seemed to him that the people of Dundee would deem it a rare treat,
To see such splendid animals at a site on Commercial Street.

But when the bears were transported from a cellar in Nethergate,
Bruin became anxious and surly, and in fact grew quite irate,
And he strained against his bonds until at last he did break free,
And he ran out into the High Street of the fair city of Dundee.

Now when the bear was roaring and raging in the heart of fair Dundee,
The people looked at him and quite sensibly did flee,
One woman sought refuge in the shop of Messrs. J. Jamison & Co.,
But it availed her nothing, for after her the bear did go.

And when they beheld the fearsome bear among all their haberdashery,
The staff threw up their hands and bewailed this sad catastrophe,
For they had never expected to encounter a beast so savage,
And they were forced to leave it so that their stock it might ravage.

But when it seemed to the people that things were past the bounds of sanity,
They were saved by the simple fact of Bruin the bear’s great vanity,
For Bruin beheld a mirror, and sat peacefully to admire his reflection,
Which caused the staff of Messrs. J. Jamison & Co. to recover from their dejection.

Now it chanced that a former sailor, who was both brave and loyal,
Was gainfully employed nearby at the Theatre Royal,
And having been a sailor, he was a man of action,
And resolved to capture the bear while he was engaged in this distraction.

And so the sailor took a rope and fashioned it into a noose,
And he dropped it around the bear’s neck, so that to flee Bruin had no excuse,
And so the polar bear was led back into captivity,
To trouble no more the citizens of the fair city of Dundee.

Now the people had fled in terror and the bear did freely rampage,
But when all was said and done, Bruin had not done too much damage,
Except to one mannequin, that the bear had rent and tore,
But it was only a dummy, so there wasn’t any gore.

So the people with Mr. Woods were justly quite incensed,
And bade him take precautions if to show the bears he recommenced,
For the moral of this story, which in their minds remained,
Was that animals should not be exhibited unless they are securely contained.

An Experience in Unfandom

Disney’s new Star Wars series, Ahsoka, has reached its fifth episode, and I am finding it… educational, in an odd way. Because it is really showing me how the other half lives.

I saw Star Wars – the first movie, the one that’s now known as “Episode IV” – in 1978, and it’s fair to say that it fried my little fifteen-year-old fanboy brain. It was ridiculously epic space opera brought to life on the big screen, with everything I’d come to expect from space opera – exploding planets, weird aliens, more robots than you could shake a stick at, blaster bolts and laser swords – it was awesome and amazing and spectacular, and I loved it to bits. Of course I knew there would be a sequel – that much was obvious as soon as I saw Darth Vader regain control of his TIE fighter – and in due course it came out, and it was The Empire Strikes Back, and it wasn’t what I expected, but that was kind of a good thing; it broadened and deepened the setting, and posed a number of interesting questions, while still delivering on the spectacle. By the time Return of the Jedi came along… well, the spectacle was still there, but the story seemed weaker, the interesting questions posed by Empire didn’t really get satisfactory answers – I still enjoyed it, it was a lot of fun, but I felt, rather, as though the story had come to a natural end. Two great movies and one fairly good one, that was enough for me. I’d heard of George Lucas’s idea of a nine-film series, a trilogy of trilogies in which the films I knew were only the middle bit. I didn’t think that was ever going to happen.

But Star Wars was immensely popular, and the spin-offs, tie-ins and cash-ins started almost at once. Toy shops were absolutely flooded with those little plastic figures, featuring every character in the movies, from Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader down to alien-glimpsed-for-half-a-second-in-the-cantina-scene. There were tons of the things, and I wanted them… but, even in those days, I was a morbid completist, and I could see that, if I started collecting them, there were so many coming out that I would never get a full set… so, in a rare moment of intellectual maturity, I decided not to start at all. And – and here comes trouble – I took the same decision regarding most of the spin-offs, too.

Somewhere, I think, I still have my copy of Alan Dean Foster’s Splinter of the Mind’s Eye, but that’s the only Star Wars spin-off novel I’ve ever read. In latter years, I got to know some of the video games, and I do think Knights of the Old Republic was thoroughly amazing (and I still get goosebumps when I remember seeing the big plot twist for the first time), but the whole “Expanded Universe” pretty much passed me by.

Of course, in the end we did get the trilogy of trilogies, despite my doubts. The sequel trilogy went rather like the first one – spectacular first episode, more thoughtful and interesting second one, flashy but a bit lame conclusion. The prequels, however… oh dear.

It wasn’t that they were bad movies – although they were – it was the way they grafted a load of backstory onto the first film, and it didn’t fit. The Jedi, who are a near-forgotten myth in “Episode IV”, are everywhere a generation before, leading the Republic’s forces into battle with lightsabres blazing, not to mention running a galaxy-wide programme of stealing Force-sensitive children. And then there’s the question of Jedi celibacy – the idea of “non-attachment”, which is apparently so important that Anakin’s violation of it is the catalyst for driving him to the Dark Side. (Not that Anakin’s tragic character arc is exactly convincing anyway – his conversion to the Sith philosophy looks an awful lot like a sustained fit of sulking to me.) Not only is this an unattainable ideal (one which some of us wouldn’t even want to attain,) it’s also inherently violated by the Jedi one-on-one mentoring system – go on, just show me a master/padawan pair who don’t have strong feelings about each other. And, of course, the original film has Ben Kenobi telling Luke Skywalker that his father was a Jedi… the same way he might have said “your father was a quantity surveyor.” Not a hint that a Jedi being a father was a world-shaking transgression. No further comment along the lines of “and that was very bad and wrong of him, he should have stuck to the old Jedi tradition of relentless masturbation like the rest of us.”

So, Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader because of 1) breaking a Jedi rule that I’d never heard of and that didn’t make much sense, 2) generic worrying about mortality, 3) sulking over some perceived slights from the Jedi hierarchy, and 4) general late-adolescence going through a Goth phase. I wasn’t impressed.

Nor was I impressed by the way the Republic was portrayed, as an organization that combined the worst features of sclerotic bureaucracy and complacent aristocracy. As for the wise and noble Jedi – well, apart from the whole child-stealing and stuffy-hierarchy thing, I question the wisdom and nobility of employing a captive army of brainwashed clone troopers, ten year old kids in twenty year old bodies – especially one which they came by in distinctly suspicious circumstances (“fell off the back of a lorry, squire, no questions asked.”)

No, I didn’t like the prequels very much. But other people did. Enough to justify a new round of spin-offs and tie-ins. The Expanded Universe expanded itself yet further, and of course I, err, continued not to keep up with it. Apparently, in the animated “Clone Wars” movie, Anakin Skywalker acquired a young padawan called Ahsoka Tano, who had a rather turbulent history with the Jedi over the course of seven seasons of the Clone Wars animated show, none of which I watched. And then she was involved in four seasons of Star Wars: Rebels, which followed the likes of Hera Syndulla, Sabine Wren, Ezra Bridger and Chopper the droid around. Or so I gather. I didn’t watch it.

But I have been watching the recent live-action shows. I may not be as fond of them as some people are, but they’re generally entertaining, and they haven’t, until now, depended on my knowing eleven seasons and who knows how many tie-in novels worth of backstory. So, when Ahsoka Tano cropped up in The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett… well, I noticed her, anyway. I can’t honestly say she made all that much of an impression – since I knew pretty much nothing about the character, she just came across as Random Jedi Person #386 to me. But I did notice quite a lot of buzz around the character, from people who did know who she was, and had followed her career for a long time.

So that’s where I was when the Ahsoka series started. And, well….

Fans, who know these characters and care about them, were understandably thrilled to see how these new versions had grown and developed. I have read reviews, praising the character interactions and the way their shared history shows through. Except, I know nothing about their shared history, and a great deal of the show, therefore, consists of people I don’t know doing things I don’t care about. Consequently, I tend to agree with some other reviews I’ve read, in that all this character stuff makes the actual plot move only slightly faster than the pitch drop experiment.

The first episode begins with Ahsoka searching, slowly and methodically, for a bronze cricket ball thingy that is evidently some important plot MacGuffin. I don’t know why she’s looking for it, or where she’s looking for it, or how come she knows it’s there. Not a good start. Later, we get quite a lengthy sequence of Sabine Wren being, well, a bit of a brat – blowing off a public speaking engagement to zoom around on her hover-bike and then hang out at her space-apartment with her freaky space-cat. This is my introduction to the character, and it really doesn’t make me want to care about her. If you have been following her career previously, no doubt it makes sense. The bronze cricket ball turns out to be a star map which may lead to another galaxy, where Ezra Bridger and Admiral Thrawn were lost, back in something I didn’t watch. The good guys want Ezra Bridger back. The bad guys want Admiral Thrawn back. There is only one bronze cricket ball, so it becomes a bone of contention between them. So far, so obvious. I still don’t know who these people are, although I note that Ezra Bridger has a surprisingly normal-sounding name for someone in the Star Wars setting. And so things move, slowly, on….

By the end of episode four, the bad guys have seized the cricket ball and are on their way to the other galaxy. Oh, and Ahsoka herself has been tossed off a cliff and is now talking to the ghost of Anakin Skywalker – well, at least I know who he is, but at this point, you couldn’t pay me to care about Anakin Skywalker. (Did anyone really believe she was dead? In a setting where people come back from the dead even if you’ve seen them get killed? When she’s spent quite a bit of the preceding three episodes leaping from great heights and sticking the superhero landing with not so much as a tentacle out of place?) Episode five had a lot of Ahsoka revisiting her past relationship with Anakin, which as far as I could see consisted of them angsting at each other while lots of clone troopers got killed around them. Then they climbed aboard the magic space whale and followed the bad guys to the other galaxy. I can’t help thinking that the conclusion of episode four would have made a great cliffhanger ending for episode one, and the end of episode five could have been a great way to end episode two, and the show would then have three more episodes in which the characters could do interesting and exciting things, instead of things like going through the work records at the spaceship breaking yards, or failing to levitate a coffee cup, or spending a quite inordinate amount of time hanging around for a very long and tedious countdown to reach zero.

Is this a flaw in the show? I’m inclined to think that it is. It’s all very well for the dedicated fans, but the less dedicated, such as myself, could do with meeting these characters in a way that doesn’t depend so much on all that backstory. It’s not a problem confined to the Star Wars franchise, of course; people are already complaining about the amount of prior knowledge you have to have in order to understand the later Marvel Comics offerings. (And that one’s going to get a whole lot worse, if the Fantastic Four and the X-Men get grafted back onto the franchise. Even now, I keep coming across the bleached bones of reviewers who’ve perished while trying to map the continuity jungles of the X-Men.)

So anyway. Here are some things which I, in my non-fan sort of way, have jotted down about the story so far:-

  • Rosario Dawson is perfectly fine as Random Jedi Person #386. She is cool and collected and efficient, and gives the impression of having a full, rich, inner life. That she is going to keep to herself.
  • Hera Syndulla serves no narrative purpose at all. I know she has to be there, because the character was in Star Wars: Rebels and this is all about the fanservice, but she doesn’t actually do anything of any significance. “But she rescues Ahsoka from the ocean!” I hear someone cry. Yeah, right, like the star of the show couldn’t wash up on a beach somewhere. At the end of episode five, Ahsoka actually leaves her behind in another galaxy, and there is nothing to indicate she will be missed.
  • This is not the first time Star Wars has showcased characters with no narrative purpose. I’m thinking of The Phantom Menace, and Darth Maul. Darth Maul, whose only contribution to the plot is to make sure Qui-Gon Jinn falls down a big hole. Which means you could replace Darth Maul with a carelessly discarded banana peel, and it would make no functional difference to the story.
  • Because Hera Syndulla has nothing to do, it is necessary to fake up some conflict with the New Republic authorities for her, which mainly makes the New Republic look like the same kind of dicks as the Old Republic. She’s supposed to be a general, surely she has enough autonomy to take her personal ship and a fighter escort, to check out a piece of intelligence? Though the Republic has always had a tendency to hand out the rank of general to anyone who can successfully tie their own shoelaces two times out of three.
  • Talking of that fighter escort, there’s good old Carson Teva again. I remember him from The Mandalorian, and now he’s in this one, proving, once again, that the Star Wars galaxy consists of a tiny group of important people who all know each other. In this setting, everyone would know Kevin Bacon.
  • There was quite a bit of speculation about Marrok, a faceless character with very few lines, who looks tough for a bit but then dies an ignominious death. Not the first time Star Wars fandom has latched on to a character like that. No doubt, in the fullness of time, Marrok will get his own spin-off series. And I’m sure it will be every bit as good as The Book of Boba Fett.
  • One positive note. After something like four thousand years of Sith Lords being shrivelled geriatrics (Traya, Sidious, Dooku), horribly disfigured (Malak, Sion, Vader) or freak shows dressed up in look-at-me-I’m-evil outfits (Maul, Nihilus)…. finally, the Sith Order has wised up to the positive PR they can get by hiring some decent eye candy. Shin Hati can turn me to the dark side any time, folks. Those eyes, man, those eyes….

Am I being silly? Probably. But it has been a salutary lesson to me, this, in what fandom looks like from the outside. This is how I feel about Ahsoka – there are people who feel the same way about the whole of Star Wars. Or the MCU. Or Star Trek, or Doctor Who, or even (gasp!) Blake’s Seven. It’s a sobering thought.

I’ve talked before about how the breakout hits (in any genre, in any medium) tend to have the “plus factor”, something which appeals to people beyond the core constituency of their fan base. Ahsoka, I fear, is sadly lacking in that plus factor. Fans of the character are visibly loving it, and good luck to them. But if you’re not a fan of the character, it’s not offering much reason to become one.
