Budget Deckbuilding: Color-based Enchantment Control

The old-school picture of “Blue Elemental Blast“, the bane of Red decks everywhere. But this is not the only option that is described with the phrase “color-hate”.

I went on record before saying that the goals I set myself in terms of what I want to achieve on this blog are value on purpose. I like writing articles about whatever I find interesting hobby-wise and limiting myself by having to reach some arbitrary quota or finish writing all about a certain topic seems counter-productive at best. However, one soft goal, if you want to call it that, is that I want to feature example decks for every block I have listed in my “Magic for a Budget” section. On one hand, I like the idea of deckbuilding challenges and taking a look at some old set and having to come up with how those cards could be implemented into a newer strategy is certainly fun, but on the other hand I also want to give new players or interested readers an idea of what can be done with the cheaper cardboard that Magic the Gathering has to offer, regardless of its age. With this philosophy in mind, I saw the empty section of example deck lists for the Tempest block and went to work creating something that uses cards from Tempest, Exodus, and Stronghold in a cheap but functional deck; and I found a theme in the color-hate enchantments.

Budget Deckbuilding: Life Drain

Eventide Preconstructed Decks take three comes with another two-color combination, and seeing how the other two decks were quite good I expect a lot from this one, too. And in my opinion, it does really have a chance to shine: “Life Drain” is its name, the colors are White-Black, and the entire theme seems to take inspiration from the Orzhov playbook using small increment of life loss and life gain to build an advantage. Let’s see how well it can do its job.

Stalk’s Videogame Corner: TCG Card Shop Simulator

Game: TCG Card Shop Simulator
Developer: OPNeon Games
Genre: Simulation
Releases: 2024 (Windows)
Stalk’s Rating: 6/10

I play simulation games semi-regularly and I do have an interest and write about all sorts of TCGs, so when I found the “TCG Card Shop Simulator” it seemed like a match made in heaven. Imagine having your own hobby store, with full control of how it looks, what will be sold, and what events will be partaken in. With trading card games such as Yu-Gi-Oh!, Pokemon, and Magic the Gathering going strong for decades at this point, it probably really was just a matter of time until a game took on the premise of selling those cards; and this is exactly what the “TCG Card Shop Simulator” sets out to do. But whether it is successful in providing a solid gaming experience remains to be seen in the article to follow.

Budget Deckbuilding: Death March

After the nice surprise that was “Battle Blitz” last week, giving us a White-Red Aggro-Control deck with a few surprises along the way, I do have high hopes for the next dual-colored Preconstructed Deck of Eventide. This time, we have Black and Green being featured in a deck called “Death March”, which sounds like we are going to un-alive something; not that Black-Green would not have the tools to do so. Let me get straight into the card analysis, since we might have another good product on our hands right here.

Stalk’s Videogame Corner: Pokémon ROM Hacks 2

It’s time for some more Pokemon ROM Hacks. You know, ROM Hacks of Pokemon games are great: Since you play them on the emulator, you can speed up any parts you already know but still are able to get fresh and unique ideas right on your computer from dedicated fans of the Pokemon franchise. During times when Nintendo goes completely bananas again, it is good to know that I have probably hundreds of versions of “Pokemon FireRed” that I can play, using new maps, changed storylines, different original Pokemon, and sometimes even impressive Fakemons. Sure, there are always some stinkers and this article will feature a few of them, but starting a new ROM Hack being as easy as it is often gives me something to do for the evening; and also something to watch for the rest of the Discord group. With that being said, here are six more Pokemon ROM Hacks that I played over the last few weeks, with both pictures and opinions attached.

Hentai Shovelware Part 4 – Yet more shovelware

You would think that there is only so much hentai shovelware that can be made, but that’s where the name comes from. You have to move them with a shovel since the amount is so massive; and the products themselves are so shitty that there is little reason to use something more delicate as a tool. This is another article that shows that “sex sells” is a universal truth, so here you have another fifteen titles that I got out of the way that I would not recommend playing.

Budget Deckbuilding: Battle Blitz

We start the Preconstructed Decks for Eventide with a classic color combination: White-Red. Now, that means we have an Aggro deck at our hands; and with the entire Shadowmoor block presenting some crazy cardboard, I have high hopes for “Battle Blitz”, the deck at hand. White-Red combines lots of good traits with high aggression from Red via burn and creatures with Haste, which meet exiling removal and other solid offensive keywords like First Strike and Flying from White. Let us see what “Battle Blitz” decided to go for.
