Whenever a game receives a lot of hype, I cannot help but have a certain amount of scepticism towards the validity of the claims. True, sometimes really good games gain the media attention they deserve, but with gaming stories like “No Man’s Sky” or “Cyberpunk 2077”, just two examples out of a rich basket of options, I might want to see some substance to the fanfare. Cue “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt”: When the game arrived in 2015, I did not really care much about the masses raising it to the status of “Game of the Decade”, or whatever else bullshit they were spewing in the middle of the year back then. I tested the game at my friend Marcel’s house, but did not really get into it due to stairs causing lethal damage to the main character Geralt, my horse disappearing when it hits water, and quests close to my level feeling incredibly unfair. However, a lot of time has passed since then, and when the game went on sale on Steam, I felt the strange obligation of playing it to cement my opinion; or renew it for that matter. And while some criticism still stands today, I experienced a much different game than I did about six years earlier.
