Amazon launches peer-to-peer selling in Bangalore

Just saw the news.

Amazon has launched peer-to-peer (P2P) selling in Bangalore, India. (The page says it is only available there as of now. I hope and assume they will roll it out to more towns and cities in India.)

Amazon Web Services CLI rewritten in Python

The Amazon Web Services Command Line Interface (AWS CLI) has been rewritten, in Python.

Saw this news in a thread on the Python Reddit.

According to the thread, it (the AWS CLI) was earlier written in Java, and now uses Python, and either boto or boto-core.

I had blogged about boto here, earlier. boto is a Python library to enable access to Amazon Web Services, written by Mitch Garnaat.

The Google command line tool gsutil also uses boto.

Though the tutorial uses the C language, many of the concepts discussed in the article are applicable to writing command line tools in Python as well, because, when writing such tools, you will basically be using the C library and Unix features such as standard input, standard output, pipes and I/O redirection, but via Python.

Google Compute Engine launched

Google Compute Engine

It is sort of an AWS competitor though there may be more (or less) to it than that (over time). It is an IaaS. I had recently blogged about the rumors that this may happen.

Interesting. I remember thinking, a while back, given Google's experience with scaling hardware, software and distributed systems, that they should do something like this, as a for-pay service, though I had used the term Technology as a Service to myself then, when thinking about it. Terms like PaaS and IaaS were barely in vogue back then (though SaaS was). Heh :)

Google eBooks and eBookStore

Google had launched an eBookStore which seems roughly similar to the Amazon ebooks service - it both allows you to buy ebooks and download free ebooks, and also syncs your reading across devices and computers. It seems to have launched sometime last year. As of now it is only for the US, but they have plans to extend it to other countries. Many links about it below.

Amazon announces HTML5-based Kindle Cloud Reader

Amazon has released a Kindle Cloud Reader "written from the ground up in HTML5", according to PCMag.com. It can automatically sync with other Kindle apps, allowing you to start reading on the Web and continue on other devices. You can also read offline.

Read Kindle ebooks without a Kindle

Yes, you read that right - you don't need a Kindle device to read Kindle ebooks. You can read them on your PC (Windows), Mac, iPhone, iPad, BlackBerry, or Android Phone. Amazon has free Kindle reader software for all those computer and mobile platforms.

UPDATE: I downloaded and tried out the free Kindle reader app for Windows. It seems to work well (on a brief test, of course.). I like the default font and the uncluttered appearance of the screen, and the similarity to a physical book - clear black text on a white background, with enough spacing between words, and on the sides of the text.
