Can you spot the two things hidden in the picture above? One is related to the occasion for this post, the other my new favourite character in Neverness to Everness, which I’m still playing every day.
Ok, they’re not actually that well hidden, but when I came across that sunflower field in NTE’s new playable area I couldn’t resist.
Anyway, first things first – this blog is indeed nine years old today. Time flies, and all that.
The good news is that I still really enjoy playing video games. When I look past the cash-grabs, failed AAA (or even quadruple-A) projects, layoffs and other industry scandals, as hard as it is sometimes, I still think that the quality and quantity of great games we have right at our fingertips nowadays is nothing short of amazing.
I do play very different kinds of games when compared to, say ten or twenty years ago, which is just as much of a surprise as it really isn’t. I mean, back when I was playing Ultima Online, and Star Wars Galaxies right after that, I was convinced that I would be playing those or very similar games basically forever.
However, not only has gaming changed since then, I have too.
I’ve talked about my growing reluctance to interact with other players more than once, for instance, and that has obviously had a pretty big impact on the stuff I’ve chosen to play, or not to play.
Luckily there are games that very much feel like playing an MMORPG in many ways, despite me being the only one around. Like Genshin Impact before it, NTE is such a game, which obviously makes it a very good fit for me. Of course there’s much more to like about it, but I’ve already covered that.
So let’s talk about the 1.1 update real quick, shall we?
Lacrimosa is the game’s third limited gacha unit – limited meaning that you can only roll for them when their specific banner is up, outside of that there’s no getting them – and as you can see I did in fact roll for her.
She’s really fun, super cute and quite a powerhouse in combat, too. Her main gimmick when it comes to beating up anomalies is that she can learn her foes’ skills and use them herself. It’s not a one-time thing either, quite the contrary. She collects them all in a book – if it wasn’t copyrighted one might call it a Pokédex – and can freely switch to another when out of combat. I’ve counted 46 slots in that book, 11 of which I’ve managed to collect up to now, so that’s gonna be fun for quite a while I guess.
Oh, and did I mention that she can fly?

I mean, she is a vampire after all. Or is she? Hm, let’s see…sleeps in a coffin, transforms into a bat, and drinks…wait, what? She drinks Tomato Jelly? First of all, what even is that? And second, why doesn’t she drink blood?
Probably because the game has a PG rating of 13+, and I suppose over in China they’re even more touchy about these kinds of things than we are.
To be fair, it probably would take away quite a bit of her cuteness factor if she had to stop whatever she’s doing to suck dry some passersby on the regular…so tomato jelly it is. I’m happy to have her on my team either way.
As for the new content…it doesn’t seem to be all that much, unfortunately.
I’ve finished the main story in one sitting, for example. It is great, don’t get me wrong, I just hope we won’t have to wait five weeks (which is the cadence for major patches they seem to have settled on) for it to continue.
The new island is nice and has a new type of anomalies on offer. I have one big gripe with it however – it’s basically completely seperate from the city. Yes, you can see it from Hethereau and vice versa, but to get there or back you have to either port or use the ferry – which, to give credit where it’s due, isn’t just a glorified loading screen, it actually rides in real time and lets you enjoy the scenery (at least from the island to the city it does, I haven’t managed to have it go the other way) – but I was very much looking forward to the city proper getting expanded, and that hasn’t happened.
Maybe there’s more to it than meets the eye though, after all I’ve only started to explore it on Thursday.

Now, about that MMO stuff…well, it’s not that I don’t play with other people at all anymore. As a matter of fact my little Warframe clan is more lively right now than it ever was, which I’m really happy about.
I’ve managed to talk another buddy from work as well as a bandmate of mine into checking the game out, and they both like it a lot. Then the former brought in his son, and the latter a couple IRL buddies, and all of a sudden we’re eight pretty active players. This has rekindled my own enthusiasm for the game once more, and while Warframe is a game that works astonishingly well with random matchmaking, it’s unsurprisingly much more fun when you know each other and work towards specific goals together.

I also dipped my toes into the survival game genre for the first time this past year – and then dove in headfirst for 250 hours because I liked what I found very much. Dune: Awakening has remained my only foray into the genre however, at least as of yet.
Lastly, my horror game marathon between November and March was a lot of fun. I’ve played six games all the way through, and the quality ranged from quite good to all-around awesome.
Here’s my final ranking:
-
- Resident Evil Requiem
- Silent Hill f
- Silent Hill 2 (remake)
- Resident Evil Village
- Resident Evil VII
- Resident Evil 4 (remake)
All in all it was a very good year in gaming for me. Here’s hoping, since my next blogiversary will be somewhat of a milestone (one decade, holy shit!), that the next one will be even better.
