Simon Coter has announced the release of Oracle Linux 9 Update 4, the latest stable release of Oracle's Linux distribution built from the source code of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). Besides a Red Hat-compatible Linux kernel 5.14, Oracle also provides a custom-built 5.15 kernel called Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (UEK). "We are pleased to announce Oracle Linux 9 Update 4, the latest version of the premier enterprise operating system for distributed computing environments. Oracle Linux 9 Update 4 for the 64-bit Intel and AMD (x86_64) and 64-bit Arm (aarch64) platforms is now generally available. This release is application binary compatible with the corresponding Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 Update 4. The following features, enhancements and changes related to programming languages, web and database servers have been introduced in Oracle Linux 9 Update 4: Python 3.12, can be installed in parallel with Python 3.9 and Python 3.11 on the same system; Ruby 3.3.0 is included in a new ruby:3.3 module stream; PHP 8.2 is included in the new php:8.2 module stream...." Oracle Linux 10.1 delivers a strengthened cryptographic foundation built to support modern security requirements and emerging post-quantum cryptography (PQC) standards. OpenSSL introduces support for ML-KEM, ML-DSA, SLH-DSA, and the QUIC transport protocol, enabling more secure and efficient encrypted communication. NSS has been updated to include ML-DSA support, enhancing signature security for post-quantum readiness. GnuTLS adds certificate compression, expanded ML-DSA algorithm coverage, and improved PKCS#11 module handling. The release also enhances openCryptoki with broader PKCS#11 v3.0 mechanisms, SHA-3 and SHAKE capabilities, and expanded key-wrapping and secure key-handling features - delivering more robust capabilities for both hardware- and software-backed cryptographic operations." Simon Coter has announced the release of Oracle Linux 9 Update 3, an updated build of Oracle's distribution built from the just-released Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 9.3: "Oracle Linux 9 Update 3 for the 64-bit Intel and AMD (x86_64) and 64-bit Arm (aarch64) platforms is now generally available. This release continues to be application binary compatible with the corresponding Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 Update 3 release, as has been the case since the first release in 2006. Oracle Linux 9 Update 3 ships with the newest Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel Release 7 Update 2 (UEK R7U2) and Red Hat Compatible Kernel (RHCK) packages. Oracle Linux now supports automatic reboot of systems after patches are installed through DNF. With enhanced DNF, automatic reboot with different options (never, when-changed, when-needed) can speed-up patch management operations. The enhanced DNF utility introduced two new options: dnf leaves - to list the installed packages that aren't required by any other installed packages; dnf show-leaves - to list newly installed leaf packages and packages that have become leaves after a transaction." Oracle Linux now supports offline upgrades. Offline upgrades can help protect a system during upgrades by performing package installations after a reboot and before libraries that might be affected by package updates have loaded. With this enhancement, running services won't be impacted by operating system updates. With offline upgrades, DNF does not apply the updates directly, but it notifies the systemd process that updates need to be applied." This release is 100% application binary compatible with corresponding Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 Update 1 release. This Oracle Linux 9 release includes the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel Release 7 (UEK R7). UEK R7 is based on the upstream Linux Kernel 5.15 and is supported on both Oracle Linux 9 and Oracle Linux 8. Oracle Linux 9 Update 1 reintroduces Application Stream modules and includes bug and security fixes, and feature updates. The most important changes are in the areas of security and development tools. Security: OpenSSH supports setting the minimum RSA key length; crypto-policies enforce the OpenSSH 2048-bit RSA key length minimum by default; OpenSSL option supports SHA-1 for signatures; keylime package is available."
