DAT Linux is a Linux distribution for data science. It provides an automated package manager for fetching dozens of open source, data science tools and apps. It's based on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and runs the LXQt desktop. The custom DAT Linux Control Panel provides a centralised one-stop-shop for running, updating, and managing many of data science programs.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

DAT Linux Review: My Experience and Overall Thoughts

DAT Linux is a pretty interesting distro because it is clearly built with a specific type of user in mind: people who work with data. It is not trying to compete with Ubuntu, Fedora, or Linux Mint as an everyday desktop replacement. Instead, it feels more like a ready-to-use workstation for students, researchers, programmers, and anyone who wants a Linux environment geared toward data science.

My first impression is that DAT Linux feels practical. The biggest selling point is that a lot of the annoying setup work is already done for you. Normally, getting a machine ready for Python, scientific libraries, notebooks, and analytics tools can involve a lot of troubleshooting. DAT Linux tries to remove that friction, which is especially helpful if you are new to Linux or just want to focus on your work instead of configuring your system.

What I liked

1. It saves a lot of setup time
The best thing about DAT Linux is the convenience. Having data science tools ready to go makes the system feel like a purpose-built workstation rather than a blank Linux install. For someone who just wants to start learning or working with data, this is a big advantage.

2. It feels familiar because it is Ubuntu-based
Since it is built on Ubuntu, you still get access to a huge amount of software, documentation, and community support. You are not dealing with an obscure package manager or a completely different Linux philosophy.

3. Good choice for beginners in data science
A lot of beginners get stuck before they even write their first line of code because setting up environments can be frustrating. DAT Linux lowers that barrier and lets people spend more time actually learning.

4. Nice idea for dedicated work machines
If you have an older laptop or a separate workstation that you mainly use for research, programming, or analytics, DAT Linux makes a lot of sense. It has a clear purpose.

What I didn’t like

1. The community is relatively small
This is probably the biggest downside. If something goes wrong, you might not find as many DAT Linux-specific tutorials or forum answers compared with Ubuntu, Mint, or Fedora. In many cases you will probably be looking for Ubuntu solutions instead.

2. It is not really a general-purpose desktop distro
For normal daily use — browsing, gaming, office work, media — DAT Linux does not offer a huge advantage. There are other distributions that feel more polished for everyday desktop use.

3. Advanced users may not see much benefit
If you already know how to set up Python environments, install libraries, and configure development tools, DAT Linux may not add much value. You might prefer starting with a minimal Ubuntu or Debian installation and building your own setup.

Final thoughts

Overall, I think DAT Linux is a solid idea and a useful niche distribution. It is not a Linux distro I would recommend to everyone, but it does what it is designed to do: provide a convenient starting point for people working with data.

For a student, researcher, or someone getting into data science, it can be a great way to avoid hours of configuration headaches. For a general desktop user, though, I would probably choose something more mainstream.

My overall impression: DAT Linux feels less like a replacement for traditional Linux distributions and more like a specialized toolbox. If you need that toolbox, it is genuinely useful. If you do not, you probably will not notice much difference.

Making the DAT Linux is a good idea because there is no specific Linux related to data science but I strongly avoid users using this Linux because there is no source code available as well as there is no specific known person or company behind this development as of today, January 17, 2025.
Distro watch's board members should not introduce an unknown Linux to Linux users. This is not legit even if the distro is based on another known Linux (such as Ubuntu or ...).
Please be clear, This is Linux.
