Michael Borglin · Inside Surge Credit

This week, my cofounder Yash and I had lunch with a DeFi expert from across the way in the Presidio - formerly House of Web3, now just House.

We walked him through Surge.

His response:

“So that’s basically the same as WBTC?”

I was shocked.

How could someone deep in DeFi think a wrapped Bitcoin token is the same as native Bitcoin?

WBTC is a useful DeFi primitive, but it is not the same thing as holding native Bitcoin. WBTC is a tokenized representation of BTC that depends on custodial infrastructure. Surge is different.

With Surge, the borrower’s Bitcoin sits in a Bitcoin Taproot vault with rules enforced by Bitcoin. We even give Bitcoiners a unilateral exit if things go wrong.

Who gets the Bitcoin if there is a problem with WBTC, cbBTC, TBTC, BBTC, GBBTC…

Bitcoiners do not want another product where they hand over their coins and hope everything goes well.

They want real custody guarantees.

That is the point of Surge.

We pull the DeFi side out and keep it at a safe distance from the borrower, while still giving them the functionality and price point they expect:

Borrow when you want.
Repay when you want.
At the best price in the market.

Access credit. Keep native Bitcoin exposure. Avoid turning your BTC into a wrapped token just to get liquidity.

This week the US Government is teasing updates to the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve. It is clear Bitcoin is growing, more products will enter the market.

Some will be custodial.
Some will be wrapped.
Some will be cheaper.
Some will be easier.

But for Bitcoiners, the real question is simple:

Not your keys, not your coins.

Surge is being built for people who care about that answer.

Native Bitcoin collateral.
Non-custodial credit.
Real exit guarantees.
