January is all about the feet and for good reason—the feet are the beginning of the kinetic chain, and their health impacts how the rest of our bodies move.

But what exactly are “healthy” feet, and are there ways we can take care of our feet outside of Pilates?

At Pilates in Common, when we think about "healthy feet," we envision feet that function as they were designed. We want toes that extend upwards, flex downwards, and spread apart; soles of the feet that invert towards each other and evert away from each other; and a symbiotic relationship between the bones in our feet and our shins that allows for ankle dorsiflexion and plantar flexion. We aim for feet that don't ache and that we can rely on, but achieving this requires nurturing them!

If you're reading this newsletter, chances are your feet are already pretty healthy or well on their way there because you nurture them with Pilates. This practice helps to strengthen the muscles inside and outside of our feet and builds functioning connections between the feet and other joints.

Join Nicole this Friday to add tools to your “Build-Healthy-Feet” kit and check out the deep-dive section below to learn more about ways to take care of your feet out of the studio and off the mat. If you’re someone who struggles with foot cramps or you’re curious about how the health of your feet affects the health of your core, you’ll definitely want to read on!

Class Theme:

Friday, January 17th @ 12pm with Nicole:

Did you know each foot contains over 20,000 sensory nerve endings—more than any other part of the body per square inch? Our feet are incredible communicators, sending vital information up the kinetic chain to guide hip stabilization and mobility.

In today’s class, we’ll awaken our feet and explore how different areas of the feet connect to specific parts of the hips. Amazingly, the pinkie toe links to the lateral hip, the big toe connects to the inner leg, pelvic floor, and deep core, while the heel corresponds to the back of the hip.

Get ready to feel the magic of this intricate connection and discover a deeper understanding of your body’s movement!

Deep Dive:

One of the most effective ways you can take care of your feet outside of your Pilates practice is by wearing proper footwear. We can't stress this enough: Most shoes do not promote healthy feet. We repeat: most shoes do not promote healthy feet. Click on the picture below to learn why and for tips on how to pick a shoe that lets your feet function as they were designed to do!
