Note: This was originally sent by email through my old newsletter, but I've migrated it over to my personal website as blog posts, so I own all my content and it's all under one roof.
I hope you enjoy my newsletter of this month.
🧘♂️ Calm
I currently use this app for meditation, and I highly recommend it. The Daily Calm sessions of about 10 minutes are great to keep up a daily meditation habit. It also features programs like "How to Meditate", sleep stories to help you fall asleep, relaxing music, and more. It uses a subscription model, but it's well worth its price in my opinion (considering the scientifically proven health benefits of meditation). You can try it out for seven days.
🎞️ 1917
★★★★½
Intense. Watch this film in the best cinema nearby (Dolby Cinema preferably, I went to the one in Hilversum). Roger Deakins better win his second Oscar for Best Cinematography.
🎞️ The Irishman
★★★★
Great meditative cinema to watch at home in multiple sessions (it's three and a half-hour long).
You can watch it on Netflix. Read more on Letterboxd.
This is a great YouTube video where Martin Scorsese describes how he creates tension in a scene of The Irishman (mild spoilers).
💗 Eeuw van de Amateur
This is my favorite dutch podcast, with Botte Jellema, Ype Driessen, and sometimes Paulien Cornelisse (those are the best episodes).
Listen with Pocket Casts (or wherever you get your podcasts).
⛰️ Recipe for Escape
This is Johnny Harris' recipe for escape, for when you need a break from the pressure.
He makes well-produced video's about traveling and gives a lot of background info on the places he visits. The channel of his wife, Iz Harris, is lovely too. For example, check out this video about Lake Como, which was about this same trip.
