👨🎨 Professional vs Hobby
I’ve thought about it for a few months, but this month I’ve decided to keep my lettering to a hobby. I think it will make me happier.
It’s hard to keep pursuing making a living of lettering while working a day job and having a social life. Of course, I could quit my day job, but then I would risk getting into a scarcity mindset, and it will probably kill my passion. Plus If I even achieve making a living of it, I will make less money with it than I can make with my (app) developing skills. I don’t know if I’m willing to lower my living standard. Also, I’ve read from a lot of illustrators that about 20% of the time they spend illustrating, and the rest of the time they spend on admin, social media, mail etc. Plus I don’t think I’m the best fit for the more dynamic nature of being my own boss. I can’t handle a lot of stress well, and I thrive with structure and a stable base. That’s why a steady day job is better for me, and in my spare time, I can still do some lettering & calligraphy, but just for myself. Also, I can start making art again (which I deliberately didn’t pursue because it’s even harder to make a living of that). Some of this was set in motion by things Austin Kleon wrote in his Keep Going book (and his other books).
This decision is still pretty fresh, so I still need to edit my website to reflect this new path I’m taking. I will keep writing this newsletter, and hopefully, I will now take some more time to write the blogs I’ve wanted to write.
🍲 Bon Appétit
Bon Appétit is one of my favorite channels on YouTube. Bon Appétit is an American food and entertaining magazine, and they have a popular YouTube channel. It’s insightful, funny, and the editing is excellent. My favorite hosts are Claire Saffitz and Brad Leone. They both have a great series on the channel: “Gourmet Makes”, in which Claire attempts to recreate or elevate popular snack foods, and “It’s Alive”, in which Brad demonstrates recipes for foods with microbial food cultures. When they are together in a video, it’s even better. Bon Appétit also has regular videos with how to make recipes.

🖼️ Voorlinden
This month I went to museum Voorlinden in Wassenaar (close to The Hague). It was a pleasant visit, and we loved it: Beautiful gardens, architecture & art. It’s clearly laid out. They have some lovely artworks on permanent display, like Leandro Erlich’s Swimming Pool and Couple under an Umbrella by Ron Mueck.
There were three exhibitions:
- Less is More (on display until January 2020)
- Do Ho Suh (on display until 29 September 2019)
- Yayoi Kusama (on display until 1 September, so that’s today, unfortunately)
My highlights were the architectural installations by Do Ho Suh, and the Infinity Mirror Room: Gleaming Lights of the Souls by Yayoi Kusama.
So I highly recommend visiting this museum.
