Cool DIY Super Famicom kit turned into cooler mini-TV kit ⊟

I’m pretty impressed with Columbus Circle’s barebones DIY kits, basically just clone Super Famicoms or Famicoms without cases. You can then put it into whatever container you can imagine, like this toaster!

What Youtuber LimoneWorkshop did, however, is to put the tiny kit into a custom-built miniature Sharp SF-1. And it totally owns.

I’m trying to imagine what I would do with one of these Super Famicom kits, and I think it’s “put it on a shelf and then decide to sell it 3 years later.” But for other people, what a cool idea!

Why yes, I would love a Kunio-kun 3-pack SNES cartridge ⊟

This (not exactly a) reproduction cartridge collects three SNES Kunio spinoffs: Kunio-kun’s Dodgeball, Downtown Nekketsu Baseball Monogatari, and Kunio’s Oden, a falling-block puzzle game with a cute food theme!

This will be released in Japan in August, published by Arc System Works. They’ve even made up a “Technos by Arc System Works” logo to connect their Kunio stewardship to the original publisher. Via miki800.

Super Famicom Wars translated ⊟

Intelligent Systems’ third entry for the series we know as Advance Wars in the West is now available with a full English translation for the first time since its debut nearly 20 years ago. This is an especially curious game because it came out exclusively for Japan’s Nintendo Power re-writable cartridge system (with demo versions broadcasted on the Satellaview service), before eventually re-releasing to Virtual Console for Wii/Wii U.

“When mining the ROM, some unreachable content has been found, which from the looks it is mostly related to debugging and internal playtesting. Some, but not all, of these things have also been translated.
The patch has been tested on Japanese, European and American SNES/SFC hardware using the SD2SNES and Super Everdrive flash cartridges. It should also work on most emulators, and has been confirmed working via ‘Canoe’ on the SNES Classic Mini.”

Shout-outs to Optiroc, breakin, Lee Hyde, and Sky Yoshi for the patch. If you prefer to play something more modern but still similar to the series, Tiny Metal released for Switch’s eShop recently (Nintendo Life’s review likes it), and the fantasy-themed Wargroove is also coming soon!

Which region will get the best SNES Classic? ⊟

With the SNES/Super Famicom Classic announced for North America, Japan, and Europe, most of the people who will be lucky enough to snag one will probably default with the hardware released to their area. But each release is unique, so let’s compare them all to determine the PREEMINENT Super NES Classic Edition based on arbitrary criteria and personal preferences.

Packaging: I told you these criteria would be arbitrary! I put this one first because the images are just in the gallery above. Each of the boxes mimic the original regions’s packaging for the console. Europe’s is the worst as usual, thanks to the drab ratings labels. Japan’s throwback Super Famicom box wins the category, because this line art continues to delight, no matter how many times Nintendo brings it back (last seen on the Super Famicom New 3DS XL).

Shubibinman Zero was a sequel to a popular Japanese action game series… released only through Nintendo’s Satellaview download service. It’s never been available on a standalone cart, until now, when Columbus Circle somehow miraculously acquired the rights to publish it.

The game will be released, on a for-real cartridge, June 30. Columbus Circle has emerged as an extremely cool company, with Famicom releases like 8bit Music Power and Kirakira Star Night, but a re-release of a genuine old game is the coolest yet somehow. Via Retronauts.

Super Famicom Edition New 3DS XL box, preorders ⊟

Just like the Super Famicom-styled Wii Classic Controller, this Japan-only limited edition 3DS features packaging inspired by the original 16-bit console’s box. It comes out late July, but you can preorder the system now at Play-Asia.

Finally, I’m a New 3DS XL guy, after being on Team Cover Plates forever. The thing that did it… a New 3DS XL that looks cooler than any Cover Plate. It’s a limited edition coming out in Japan next month for ¥21600 (around $190).

DBZ: Extreme Butoden preorders on Amazon will include Super Famicom game ⊟

Though we won’t get the limited edition bundle New 3DS and cover plates headed to Europe, at least we’ll enjoy the free digital copy of Dragon Ball Z: Super Butoden 2, the Super Famicom game originally released back in 1992, here in North America. That’s only if you reserve it at Amazon, though.

Amazon preorders will also come with early unlocks for six assist characters. DBZ: Extreme Butoden releases on October 20 for $29.99.

If you want to clean yourself, there are the Famicom and Game Boy bath towels. If you want to clean your 3DS or phone, the Famicom and Super Famicom microfiber cloths, all available on Amazon Japan via Miki800.

I think I would frame that SFC cloth and put it on my wall. Such a nice minimalist Super Famicom.

Super Famicom boxart book Kickstarter ⊟

Here’s a book worth Kickstarting and then Coffeetabling*: a collection of Super Famicom boxart images, with full-color art and descriptions. It’s on Kickstarter until September 28, and I’m confident it’ll make its goal.

Super Famicom pouches for PS Vita 2000 ⊟

So far, they’re only on Amazon Japan (via Miki800); hopefully they’ll end up on Play-Asia soon for accessibility. While it might seem weird to have cross-retro-pollination with a Nintendo theme on a Sony console accessory, back around the Super Famicom days they almost became the same thing!
