I work in a rural hotel. Due to the area and the nature of some businesses, we get a lot of long-term guests. We had this one woman staying with us for nine weeks, who was the Devil herself.

I could write a laundry list of things she did just to take pleasure from causing us misery, but what makes me the angriest is when she saw our old maintenance guy in the parking lot one morning, salt/sanding the parking lot after overnight snowfall and below-freezing temperatures.

Guest: “THAT is your maintenance guy?”

Me: “Yes, ma’am.”

Guest: “He’s ancient!”

Me: “He’s close to retirement, yes.”

Guest: “Hmm.”

After that conversation, she CHOSE to park in a different space every time she returned to our hotel. Our poor maintenance man made sure to salt/sand around her vehicle before 6 AM every morning, but instead of using that same parking spot on returning at noon, she would use the one beside it. Literally beside it.

The maintenance man would sand/salt that area and she would leave again. On return at 5 pm… You guessed it, a different spot.

Near the end of her stay, she claimed:

Guest: “My friend hurt herself getting out of my car on your slippery parking lot! I should sue! You’re gonna comp my stay if you don’t want me to!”

Me: “Hmm, gee, maybe if it wasn’t obvious on all our recorded camera footage of the parking lot that you were actively trying to find an unsalted spot, you’d have a semblance of an argument. But no, all you have is footage of you engaging in abusive behavior toward elderly staff. I’m off duty for a week after this, and it is a great pleasure to know this is the last time I will ever have to see you. Good luck with that lawsuit. I’m sure your “friend” who has never been seen will come out very clearly in the camera footage our lawyers will use.”

She demanded a manager, and I told her I was the night manager, and the other manager would talk to her tomorrow before her final checkout. I never saw her again. I have never met a human being who made me think people are gross as much as that woman.

My workplace has a parking garage underneath. We prefer that pedestrians not walk up or down the entry or exit lanes for safety reasons. There are elevators and stairs right next to the entry lane, and numerous signs posted reminding people that the lanes are not walkways and where the elevators are. They are often ignored. 

I was walking through the garage one evening and came across a couple walking down the entrance lane.

Husband: “If you don’t want people walking down the entry lane, then maybe there should be elevators nearby.”

I point at the clearly marked and brightly lit elevator lobby.

Me: “Right there, sir.”

He looked embarrassed, though that may be because his wife started laughing.

I worked an overnight security shift. There was a parking garage on site under the building I was posted at. One morning, while patrolling the garage, something drew my attention to the corner. The garage was fairly empty at that early hour, so I wasn’t sure what I expected to find, but a guy flying a small kite in front of the exhaust fan wasn’t anywhere on the list.

Me: “…”

Guy: *When he eventually noticed me.* “I just wanted to see if I could.”

Me: “…Have a good night, sir.”

I recognized the guy as an employee in the building who had a monthly parking pass. That early in the morning, it was unlikely that anyone else would see him, so I didn’t see the point in stopping him. He ended up leaving before I finished my patrol. 

It remains the oddest thing I’ve come across while patrolling the garage.

I once collected the shopping carts at a supermarket. Whilst doing my job, I got called over by two women who were arguing very loudly.

Woman #1: “This woman is harassing me, and you need to do something about it!”

Woman #2: “This lady is parked in a space for people with children, and she doesn’t have any.”

Woman #1: “Yes, I do!”

Me: “In that case, she is allowed to park there.”

Woman #2: “Tell the man where your child is!”

Woman #1: “He is at college…”

A woman storms up to the customer service desk at the grocery store and angrily states to my coworker and me:

Customer: “My car is stuck in your parking lot! It won’t start!”

Me: “Sorry to hear that, ma’am. Would you like us to call someone?”

Customer: “No! You don’t know anything! I want you to charge it!”

Me: “Oh, is it a battery issue?”

Customer: “Yes! It’s an electric vehicle!”

Me: “Oh! I see. The gas station across the street has some EV charging stations, but unfortunately, we don’t have any in our parking lot.”

Customer: “So you agree?! Me running out of charge is your store’s fault?”

Me: “No, we do not agree on that. Keeping your car charged is your responsibility.”

Customer: “You don’t know anything! It’s not my car! It’s my husband’s!”

Me: “That doesn’t matter, ma’am. If you like, we can call a towing company to tow your car to a charging station, or even home.”

Customer: “And [Store] will pay for that, yes?”

Me: “No, ma’am. We just have a company we use. You’re welcome to use your own if you have—”

Customer: “—No! [Store] needs to provide charging stations for customers! If you don’t have them, then how are we supposed to keep our cars charged!”

Me: “Ma’am, that would be like [Store] being responsible for keeping regular cars’ tanks full of gas every time they come in to shop. It doesn’t work like that.”

Customer: “Ugh! You don’t know anything!”

Me: “Well… at least I know that electric vehicles need to be regularly charged.”
