Arizona Update (Weeknote No. 26-31)
Bits and Pieces
-
I was walking through the mall to kill time one day when I came across some kind of manga or gaming shop. I don’t really know, they had stickers and keychains so I popped in. While I was browsing they guy behind the counter asked me if I ever thought about cosplay. Surprised, I simply said, “no.” He then told me that if I grew out my beard I’d make a good Obiwan. Even more surprised, I thanked him and moved on. Still, something to think about.
-
I played Cardo again Wednesday evening. I won $18! (The buy-in is $3.)
-
I walked up Tumamoc Hill three times: Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. The hike is a 1.6-mile paved trail with a 745-foot climb. The elevation at the peak is 3,110 feet.
-
I spent the week doing more work around the Arizona place. Smaller stuff this week; the big jobs are all done now and everything is ready for fall. I closed everything up on Sunday and returned home.
Women’s Professional Baseball
-
The Women’s Pro Baseball League (WPBL) held its opening day ceremony.
-
It’s the first professional women’s baseball league in the U.S. in over 70 years. The AAGPBL folded in 1954.
-
Fun fact: the four teams — Boston Hunters, Los Angeles Queens, New York Heights, and San Francisco Firebells — weren’t given just random clever names; they’re all named for pioneering American women! Love this.
-
I watched the first game between the New York Heights and Los Angeles Queens.
-
I hope the league makes a go of it and creates pressure for schools around the country to make baseball an option for more female athletes.
