Edit: my problem is with the comparison and trying to rate people's transness and who's more transgressive. If you attempt to turn this into a trans guys vs trans girls post you are missing the point.

This is what white supremacy looks like in the trans community. Genuinely.

These screenshots are literally just white supremacist, right wing talking points about conformity to the status quo being more "transgressive" than people who actually transgress social norms. It's quite literally no different than Christians, MAGA, the right wing, etc. thinking they're the ones who are actually oppressed despite engaging with ideas, values, and presentations that have actually been the ruling class status quo for centuries. It's all taken from the same self victimization playbook.

It's especially clear with the 4chan language mixed in that is just white supremacist incel shit, "gigastacy", "mog", "aura" — that's incel forum channer language that's infiltrated broader internet vernacular and it doesn't matter if the OOPs here are actually explicitly 4chan using white supremacists. They're still engaging with 4chan white supremacist language, behavior, and beliefs.

also it's interesting to me how these people seem to want to avoid addressing gnc genderfucky trans women like they create this false dichotomy where only people assigned female ever pursue genderfuck androgyny (& also NEVER have it forced onto them or are traumatized by it) and trans women (the only trans people assigned male to exist!) not fully comfortable with the og screenshot in the post I initially reblogged about transmascfeminism (I generally try to avoid bringing people venting, especially in flawed ways, about situations they are intensely emotionally affected by into more political conversations unless they are explicitly okay with that - even when it comes to TERFs, I think we should avoid digging into someone’s expression of trauma or at least making criticisms with more compassion than I have seen from many folks, and it’s not really relevant to the points I’m making anyways) and so I’m just gonna copy + paste what I said there, here, for people to understand what my issues are. You can also see this post & the post linked to it for how TMF responded.

This is not intended as a “callout.” I do not want anyone to be harassed, or even sent messages or asks trying to bait him into a debate or demand answers on the subject. I don’t think any of that is helpful and I don’t think fixating on any single individual is helpful to the bigger issue at hand. I have TMF blocked at this point and if you agree with my points here, I encourage you to do the same. It’s clear to me other people are also uncomfortable with this rhetoric in spaces discuss anti transmasculinity, which only reaffirms to me that we need to have a very explicit conversation about this within spaces that discuss anti-transmasculinity.

I think the rhetoric being promoted here is bad for trans and intersex people, and I was genuinely hopeful to see more people contributing to anti-transmasculinity theory. I just want to make my points about why this is disappointing, and to reiterate that transandrophobia/anti transmasculinity theory has always been pushing for a rejection of cissexist radical feminism and towards a nuanced, anti-binary and trans-centric feminism. Transunity emerged from this conversation for a reason, and I don’t think an anti-transunity, anti-transfeminist stance is actually going to lead to productive, beneficial theory. In these spaces, we have not spent months talking about how bad it is that TME/TMA is just a new way for trans people to be classed based on their assigned sex at birth into static categories, just to let “people are treating female as a dirty word!” and “intersex people are a vanishingly small group and bringing them up when it comes to "sex based oppression” is just a distraction from discussing AFAB oppression that doesn’t meaningfully impact AMABs" and “people criticizing AFAB and AMAB being used in this way are anti-feminist and leading to the real life Handmaid’s Tale” slide.

watching dogpiles form in real time is genuinely so triggering to me now. so this movie, Lesbian Space Princess, came out last year, but for some reason people decided to put it in the spotlight this week (it just released on Netflix, which probably has something do with that). there was a big smear that went around about how it was a terf film, because the main girl can summon a labrys out her uterus and because the movie ends with her killing a trans woman who's been trying to steal her womanhood. and I read that and was like yeah, that's obviously horrible. like holy shit.

AND THEN a couple days later (once more people had actually watched the movie and investigated) the facts got corrected: the creators stated in an interview that they wanted to reclaim the labrys as a symbol for ALL women:

DS: Transphobia in feminism has become such a major issue politically, was that something you were aware of when writing? LV: It’s hard as a queer artist because you obviously are aware, but you’re also trying to write something authentic to you and your perspective. It’s really scary what’s happening over in the UK. EHH: We were really conscious of things like the labrys (a double-headed axe). It used to be a TERF symbol and we debated including it. In the end, we put it in the film because it should belong to all lesbians, including trans lesbians. Queen LeighAnn—who is a trans woman—is shown (in the film) summoning the labrys in trans colors. We felt the positive representation of inclusion was more powerful.ALT

the main girl's mom is transgender and can summon a labrys, the labrys is coloured to look like the trans flag, multiple scenes have the trans flag in the background, the secondary main is nonbinary, and the "trans woman trying to steal her womanhood" is a drag queen who collects weapons, who doesn't even get killed. which, I get that it's still not optically great to have a queer villain, but literally everyone in this universe is queer except for the Straight White Maliens (a trio of white breadstick looking aliens who are the actual main antagonists).

I'm just tired. it seems like the only queerness people will allow to exist without a feeding frenzy is stuff like The Pitt, where nobody is actually gay but you can pretend that the bearded doctor brushed elbows homosexual-style with the twink doctor when they walked past each other without speaking. because imaginary queer rep can be perfect in your head, whereas actual queer art will always be messy and human.

maybe i’m missing something but i don’t even see why we would be obligated to tag him? it may have been nice of us to do, but like. i am not shocked at the idea of people talking about me, positively or negatively, and not tagging me. its pretty normal i feel. probably felt really bad to for him to see, because he clearly felt i would be on his side, but c'est la vie.

i don’t want anyone to harass him, to be clear, in any kind of manner. i also want to say that i do agree that i think sodomit didn’t accurately describe exactly what his (or the screenshotted person’s) points were, and the criticisms made of his points were not as strong as they could’ve been as a result of this. but i saw the post i saw and that led me to see those posts on his blog and so i responded on that post with my thoughts on the matter, because i had genuinely been interested in some of his posts before.

anyways, he doubled down on describing intersex people assigned male as a “vanishingly small” group and said (quoting me in the indent)

i think its clear TMF is aligned with radical feminism ideologically, and is pretty unapologetically intersexist, and i think people who are genuinely concerned with collective liberation of all people of all genders should take serious issue with this rise in radical feminist ideology focused on anti-transmasculinity.

this only reaffirms to me how desperately we need anti-binary feminism, and how much the “anti-transfeminist” attitude we’ve seen popping up needs to be openly criticized. transandrophobia and anti-transmasculinity have been theorized from an explicitly transfeminist, intersectional feminist, and transunitist context for years. transmasc oppression has been theorized in the context of criticizing how so much trans activism has become simply cissexist white feminism adjusted just enough to include some trans women, exactly as Emi Koyama foresaw decades ago. and now we have people trying to create a version of cissexist white feminism but for trans men. i find this absolutely terrible and i am going to continue criticizing this when i see it because i believe that it is either transunity or death. i really do not know which sexists are giving me pats on the back, but that sounds very similar to anti-transmasculine people insisting that transunity is MRA rhetoric, and MRAs insisting that feminist male liberation is radical feminist rhetoric.

(side note: its very funny how mad he is about me and my “nicely worded reasonable posts” and my “tiresome Reasonable Well Mannered Activist affect” babe i’m just autistic. i talk like a textbook and have a strong sense of justice that makes me take things seriously because its how i work, for better and for worse. my affect becomes “tiresome” and is seen as manipulative as soon as people disagree with me, it seems. i managed to hold my tongue on criticisms i could make of how he writes his posts!)

surely if we all advocated for reading bell hooks, Kimberlé Crenshaw, some Andrea Dworkin, etc., it might not dismantle existing echo chambers or persuade people to leave them, but it could at least become algorithmically meaningful enough to stop some introductions of people to these echo chambers? it could shift perspectives into action within communities, or engaging in deeper discussions of political theory, other than just venting and shit-stirring?

i think we run into a lot of walls just by so many interactions with politics taking place on social media. you can leave these social media platforms, stop engaging with tags at your own leisure, but it's still roiling on while you're not looking. and the barrier of entry is low enough where it'll continually encourage engaging NOW NOW NOW, over taking the time to reach an educated basis on these things, assuming that most of the people browsing even have time to read theory.

ig, how do we scale the wall that social media has implemented? the way i see it, it's a necessity to keep discussions from just being reactions to reactions to reactions.

good ask to get because i am feeling very tired by everything currently going down (and i mean that in all possible ways and contexts).

i think a lot about bell hooks calling for a “revolution of values”:

Only a revolution of values in our nation will end male violence, and
that revolution will necessarily be based on a love ethic.

i think that it is honestly more important to change the values and goals than it is to change the ideas themselves. not that these can be truly separated; but this is the basic force behind “they’re a little confused but they’ve got the spirit.”

the idea of transandrophobia (as a concept used to describe a form of oppression) is important, the idea of transmisogyny is important, but without the proper values and goals, we can see how easy it is for these ideas to be used for separatism. i think a major part of the benefit of reading theory like hooks’ is how it teaches you about a whole overall framework, how to think about issues of gender and race and oppression from a lens that has values of compassion and intersectionality and goals of collective liberation.

for a lot of people, i think, their political education online involves learning about specific ideas/concepts from feminism, queer activism, leftism, etc., and placing them within their pre-existing worldview. over time, collecting these ideas does meaningfully change their worldview. but the problem is that this piecemeal approach to ideology fails to actually change their overall approach. there are deeper structures to worldview that are harder to directly identify, but which are absolutely vital to engaging with in order to actually change both people’s minds as individuals, and culture overall. reading theory is often the way that people are able to engage with these structures, because an entire book can build an analysis that engages on the deeper level in a way that just learning a concept like “intersectionality” or “individualism” or “exorsexism” cannot on its own. the deeper structures are the overall map we are using to navigate these issues, and the concepts themselves are just individual locations.

but the thing is, reading theory isn’t the only way to get that! a lot of people get radicalized first and foremost through conversations with other people. i would Love for more people to read political works more, but i also think its more important to meet people who aren’t in the place (for whatever reason; literacy, frustration tolerance, time and energy, etc.) to be reading theory themselves where they are. a lot of good theory itself comes out of conversations between people; Patricia Hill Collins’ Black Feminist Thought draws directly from many working class Black women’s analyses of their own lives and the world they live in. & ultimately i think theory is often at its best when it is read socially, people coming together to learn from and critically engage with works of theory specifically to better understand their experiences and to help them work towards material revolutionary progress.

the point being is that i think that sharing theory is really good, but i think the broader solution has to be a “revolution of values” and that probably includes how the ways we treat social media spaces as a form of political engagement. i like that you brought up “shift[ing] perspectives into action within communities [rather] than just venting and shit-stirring” as i think this is a very good goal to have! i’m open to ways people think we could go about maybe creating more structure or contributing to such a change in culture.

"Trans Men don't have a history or culture or community". You only think that becouse of literal decades of transmasculine erasure and the refusal to aknowledge the trans men among the butches and studs of the past (and present). Becouse you are so married to a binary understanding of sexuality and gender labels that you ignore the vast wealth of transmasculine and FTM history and culture and community that has existed since the dawn of modern western queer culture, as if female husbands were only ever women, as if stone butches were not defined by their gender dyphoria and desire to present and live as men, as if butches and studs and AGs have not been the shared ancestors of lesbians and trans men and tomboys and all whom overlap in the very way that our queer cultural ancestors did.

And also becouse you are so U.S.-centric that you could not name a single cultural transmasculine third gender identity or non-anglo FTM label if your life depended upon it.
