Intro to Anti-transmasculinity (ATM)

(also ft. an about me section)

LBQ+ people interviewed for this report repeatedly named gendered discrimination against masculine gender expressions in particular as the catalyst for a lifetime of economic marginalization, discrimination and harassment at work, psychological abuse, and physical and sexual violence. Their accounts point to the need for deeper research and analysis of how masculine gender expression by LBQ+ people increases their risk of exposure to various human rights violations and abuses. Some reports on violence against LBQ+ people (explored below) have treated gender expression as a signifier of sexual orientation or gender identity, limiting knowledge production on how presentations of masculinity are themselves policed and violated.

“"Butches Get Punched”: Violence Against Masculine-Presenting LBQ+ People” in “This Is Why We Become Activists” by the Human Rights Watch (why does this say LBQ+?)

8 YEAR OLD TRANS GIRL NEEDS SURGERY

Our last post

Our daughter started having health issues last year, after months of fundraising we paid for a surgery she needed to keep basic bodily functions but recently she started having pain and bleeding again, turns out the last doctors fucked up something and now she can't pee without pain and bleeding. Everyday for the past 2 or so months.

A scan of a prescription, its in spanish, the personal information of the patient is censored, it reads: Dr Andrés Salas Urología Oncológica 1. We need $3,200 to afford the surgery with a trans friendly urologist.

Both my partner and I are chronically ill with disabling chronic pain, we're unemployed and take care of our kids and his elderly parents with deteriorating chronic conditions and sister after they lost everything to a house fire, including his grandma.

We find temporary jigs sporadically but we mostly survive off of mutual aid online.

We've been living in a house full of black mold and rust, without water supply for the past 2 weeks**.

I just came back from another urgent care visit from my gallbladder/liver failure so I'd appreciate if we could move forward on getting my daughter the surgery she needs and maybe affording to pay the bills we have due on august 4th.

Our friend and mutual is offering commissions to help us!!

If you can't donate but can get us something from our wishlist please consider getting the baby food cans, the air purifier or just anything you can.

$800/$3,800

**while the water supply shortage persists we will keep using part of the funds to afford bottled water, I am really sorry, but we need to at least flush the toilet and help our daughter shower to ease her pain.

AUGUST 14TH

We're not progressing towards the goal, our daughter is in pain, we're hungry, without water and I just hurt my hernia carrying water containers home.

chingaderita

Can we get at least $70 so we can get cat food and some cleaning supplies please?

Check our throne for things we need urgently, we need the bathtub and the shopping cart so we don't have to carry the water containers please please please

Or $180 to afford a water pipe service to refill our water please

already vented in this post we need help now

HELP!!!!

related to prev post, i saw this article recently & i’ve been thinking about this finding:

In a recent poll, Gallup found that LGBTQ+ identification has more than doubled since 2012, with especially high rates among Gen Z women, or those born between 1997 and 2012. In 2023, 28.5% of Gen Z women identified as LGBTQ+, compared with 10.6% of Gen Z men. […]

Our research found that, across 15 years, young women have steadily become less likely to report being exclusively attracted to the other sex. In 2011, about 22% of female students reported attraction that was not exclusively to men; by 2026, that had increased to close to 50%. Similar movement appeared across sexual behavior and identity: The share of women who reported not having exclusively male sexual partners increased from 8% to 35%, while the share identifying as something other than exclusively heterosexual increased from 18% to 44%. These trends were broadly consistent across racial groups. […]

Young men showed no comparable long-term shift and instead remained concentrated in exclusive heterosexuality; any movement away from that was limited and less sustained. The share of male students reporting attraction that was not exclusively to women remained nearly unchanged: about 14% in 2011 and 13% in 2026. This lack of movement was also seen in behavior and identity.

Among students who identified as something other than exclusively straight, male students were more likely to report exclusively gay identities than female students were to report exclusively lesbian identities. This is consistent with gender norms that leave men less room for sexual ambiguity and sort male desire into either entirely straight or entirely gay.

in studies like the USTS we can see the massive dearth in the counting of nonbinary people assigned male. & its not reducible to the exclusion of trans people assigned male, because trans women are roughly equal to trans men. its specifically the combination of being nonbinary and assigned male. & this seems to be a similar trend to what is seen here in queer men, particularly bisexual & other mspec men.

& we cannot simply attribute this to “(people perceived as) men experience more punishment for queerness” because bisexual cis women have some of the highest rates of violence victimization and poverty in the community. bisexual women do not have it easier than bisexual men, bisexual women are not privileged over bisexual men, and in general, under patriarchy, people classed as women are not being given more room for sexual exploration and sexual freedom than people classed as men.

personally my theory is that its a combination of things. particularly what comes to mind for me is that people raised & perceived as women are in general more likely to lean towards being progressive, which could mean they are more likely to find themselves in spaces (esp. online) and friend groups where they have many opportunities to learn about queerness and various kinds of queer identity. people raised & perceived as women already experience life as gender marginalized and experiencing mockery, degradation, and violence as a result, and queer spaces also tend to have feminist leanings and talk directly about these experiences of marginalization, which can allow people to interpret the marginalization they face as “an injustice that warrants resistance” and reduces the overall hoops one needs to jump over internally to identify oneself as bisexual or nonbinary or otherwise queer.

comparatively, people raised & perceived as men can cumulatively have less opportunities to learn about these identities, have a community or friend group where they can explore them, feel motivated to publicly identify with these identities, etc. and both bisexuals and nonbinary people are groups that deal with massive amounts of erasure and pressure to not only “pick a side” but pick the normal side, whether out of self-preservation or a feeling that they don’t “need” or “deserve” an openly queer identity in comparison to a monosexual gay man or a binary trans woman - who may be seen as “real” queer people.

Every day tumblr users get closer and closer to saying you can only be trans in a god honouring way.

Edit: my problem is with the comparison and trying to rate people's transness and who's more transgressive. If you attempt to turn this into a trans guys vs trans girls post you are missing the point.

This is what white supremacy looks like in the trans community. Genuinely.

These screenshots are literally just white supremacist, right wing talking points about conformity to the status quo being more "transgressive" than people who actually transgress social norms. It's quite literally no different than Christians, MAGA, the right wing, etc. thinking they're the ones who are actually oppressed despite engaging with ideas, values, and presentations that have actually been the ruling class status quo for centuries. It's all taken from the same self victimization playbook.

It's especially clear with the 4chan language mixed in that is just white supremacist incel shit, "gigastacy", "mog", "aura" — that's incel forum channer language that's infiltrated broader internet vernacular and it doesn't matter if the OOPs here are actually explicitly 4chan using white supremacists. They're still engaging with 4chan white supremacist language, behavior, and beliefs.

+ nonbinary people assigned male in particular already need far more support and explicit inclusion in queer spaces & i simply refuse to believe that misandrogynistic posting like this actually helps them!!!! people love writing these detailed caricatures of nonbinary “tmes” that are nearly indistinguishable from regular conservative caricatures of nonbinary “females” and then they turn around and act like depicting a transfem who doesn’t shave is a grievous crime. do you (oop) think this kind of posting isn’t also hurting the boydyke girlfags who were raised as boys? no you (oop) just don’t think about them at all unless you can use their exclusion as evidence of transmisogyny (completely ignoring exorsexism) or villainize them for being “caricatures of trans women” or fantasize about forcibly binarizing them.

I honestly think that the stereotype within the trans community of an "annoying theyfab who's basically just a cis woman who's trying to be special and has a hundred confusing made up labels (clearly done to annoy me)"

Often ends up seeming eerily similar to the stereotype of an "annoying blue haired liberal with confusing pronouns (clearly done to annoy me)"

Funny how the same exorsexist stereotypes bleed from wider society into the trans community

It's almost as if trans people also need to deconstruct their internalized misogyny and transphobia too

Early on in feminist movement we found that it was easier to accept the reality that gender, race, and class combined determined female destiny, and much more difficult to understand how this should concretely shape and inform feminist practice. While feminists talked often about the necessity of building a mass-based feminist movement, there was no sound foundation on which to structure this movement. The women’s liberation movement has not only been structured on a narrow platform, it primarily called attention to issues relevant primarily to women (mostly white) with class privilege. We needed theory mapping thought and strategy for a mass-based movement, theory that would examine our culture from a feminist standpoint rooted in an understanding of gender, race, and class. In response to that need I wrote Feminist Theory: From Margin to Center.

Nowadays it has become so commonplace for individuals doing feminist work to evoke gender, race, and class, it is often forgotten that initially most feminist thinkers, many of whom were white and from privileged class backgrounds, were hostile to adopting this perspective. Radical/revolutionary feminist thinkers who wanted to talk about gender from a race-sex-class perspective were accused of being traitors, destroying the movement, shifting the focus. Often our work was ignored or ruthlessly critiqued, deemed not scholarly enough or too polemical. In those days black women/women of color were often encouraged by white comrades to talk about race while our ideas about all other aspects of feminist movement were ignored. We effectively protested this ghettoization of our perspectives, sharing our commitment to creating feminist theory that would address a wide range of feminist concerns. That commitment is the ethical foundation of Feminist Theory: From Margin to Center.

the way people use the word "femme" drives me fucking goddamn coocoo bananas. what is the point of that word if you use it in ways that makes it clear you think "men" and "femmes" are not overlapping categories. its just like with people using TMA supposedly to include people who aren't trans women & then just defining TMA as "trans women and transfem nonbinary people" like. at this point just be OPENLY exorsexist it will make everything so much more straightforward

genderkoolaid

like in the vast majority of cases where i at least personally see this phrase used, its people trying to talk about marginalized genders/people affected by misogyny and recognizing that just saying “women” wouldn’t cover everything but instead of actually critically reflecting on what they are trying to talk about and the most inclusive and accurate way to cover the people actually included, they just tack “… and femmes” onto their cissexist feminism.

“[xyz example of misogyny] affects women and femmes” and its something that also affects trans men and nonbinary and genderqueer people. and it also affects gnc men / people perceived that way but then the person saying “femmes” makes it clear they aren’t thinking about femme men at all. and also while masc/butch women may be covered under “women,” given how often masc women & people perceived as masc women are left out of conversations of misogyny & have their experiences erased & deal with hostility within “women’s spaces.” its just like, if we are gonna be inclusive about how we discuss misogyny, can we actually put thought into it.

velvetvexations

i think the best way to understand how transmasc erasure relates to misogyny is. you know when a new movie or show comes out and people get furious about how they made the female character an ugly hairy butch dyke, when in reality they just made a conventionally attractive woman with short hair and makeup and a normal amount of peach fuzz?

how do you think those people same people react to an actual ugly hairy butch dyke? do you really think the primary victim of this kind of vitriol against percieved-female masculinity is conventionally attractive, gender conforming cisperi women?

it's not a coincidence that the patriarchy cultivates disgust and violent hostility towards perceived-female masculinity, while also often refusing to actually depict it or discuss it publicly. the hatred is there. the target is never made obvious. its on purpose. stop taking everything the patriarchy says at face value.

genderkoolaid

like if you can understand that misogynistic cis men will get genuinely upset about princess peach wearing pants or w/e what do you think they feel about people they see as women cutting their tits off and growing a beard. be fucking for real. some of y'all are living in a funhouse mirror world where misogyny gets less aggressive the more someone perceived as female fails to fulfill patriarchal gender roles. and it's because you have internalized transmasc erasure and anti-transmasculinity.

glados-is-my-mom
genderkoolaid

thing about misogyny no one talks about is that when "good" womanhood and femininity are defined around sexual chastity and purity, and when manhood and masculinity are associated with sexual desire and sexual action, being seen as a slut/whore crosses the line into gender nonconformity and the violence directed at such people has a lot of similarities with, and in many cases is inseparable from, anti-transmasculinity - specifically how the violence is justified by this idea that as a "fallen woman," one has forfeited one's claim to being something vulnerable which is owed protection from men in some way, even out of pity - you have forced yourself into the masculinized public world while failing to be a "real man," and so have made yourself deserving of violence from "real men." its the "well if you say you are a guy, then i get to beat you up" mindset. post with examples for those curious

i just think we should talk about this more. people find it really easy to talk about how failing masculinity moves one towards being seen as feminine, because women are the antithesis of men under patriarchy. but people are very reluctant to acknowledge the reverse, that failing femininity moves one towards masculinity, that men could be the antithesis of women. and ironically i feel like this reluctance stems from the very idea that "woman" is defined by lack, is just a negative reflection of manhood, that there isn't any complicated substance to the category and how it is socially constructed. "woman" and "female" are concepts that people put a LOT of work into making seem natural and inevitable, and that influences how certain forms of misogyny (like that which lead to anti-transmasculinity) are erased.
