Dear moon queens,
Today marks the start of a little series where we will cover each phase of the menstrual cycle, starting as the new moon rises upon us.
In Bali, it’s known as the black moon and is a big auspicious ceremony day for local women. If you do happen to be bleeding with this new moon, it could be a sign that your circadian rhythm is in good harmony with that of the lunar cycle.
Ayurvedic menstrual rituals, known as Rtumaticharya, emphasize honoring the body’s natural cycle. By aligning with the energetic phases of menstruation, these rituals aim to balance the three doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) to reduce discomfort and support overall reproductive health.
To be frank, this is the biggest game changer in understanding and supporting ourselves. ESPECIALLY if you’re on the path to motherhood and want to have a baby in the next 5 years.

You might have heard that bleeding in time with the new moon is optimal for conception, whereas bleeding with the full moon is divine timing to conceive of another kind of creative endeavor.
Know that each phase of the moon cycle has its significance and particular power. Also, if you’re not having a regular cycle currently - use the lunar cycle to anchor yourself in a cyclical flow of eating, moving and being in rhythm.
This is a time for rest, introspection, and purification. As Vata dosha, which governs movement and elimination, is most active. The focus is on supporting the downward flow (Apana Vayu) which is why we omit inversion from our yoga practice during this phase and generally conserve energy.
Consume warm, grounding foods: Eat simple, freshly prepared, warm meals like soups, stews, and kitchari to soothe Vata.
Include warming spices such as ginger, cumin, coriander, and fennel in your meals to aid digestion and reduce bloating.
Drink plenty of warm water and herbal teas, such as raspberry leaf, ginger, chamomile, or cinnamon to help flush out toxins.
Steer clear of cold drinks, raw vegetables, and heavy or processed foods, which can aggravate Vata and hinder the cleansing process.
Prioritise deep rest: Reduce your physical and mental exertion. Avoid strenuous exercise, excessive travel, and overthinking, allowing your body to focus on its natural cleansing.
Opt for gentle yoga poses that support relaxation, prioritize yoga nidra and meditation.
Honor the pull to hibernate, map out your plans for the month ahead.
Engage in reflective activities like journaling or taking a bath to manage stress and reflect on your emotional state. Consider “what am I ready and willing to receive?”
Use heat therapy: Apply a heating pad or hot water bottle to the womb zone or lower back to relax constricted muscles and relieve cramps. Can also try a castor oil pack by applying the oil generously to your belly under the heat pack.
