The day has finally cooled and the sun begins to beckon our souls toward the seaside. Señor Sun is about to set, and the community will pay their homage to this glory, most assuredly, by gathering on the beach.
Fire has drawn humans together —a place to rejuvenate, share stories, warm our bones, and be present— for as long as the ancestral tales do reach.
Here on the emerald coast of Nicaragua, I find both ancient connection and sweet solace in the steady rise and fall of the sun.
The pull of the moon through these great waters is an inescapable energy. We are, quite literally, whisked away into it. A stunning stretch of sea that is moody, loving and perpetually reminding us that change is inevitable and control is an illusion.
The sun is a holding.
A sort of anchoring I had not realized I needed until these years of rhythmic skies.
At the equator, life holds us in balance— twelve hours of light and twelve hours of darkness, nearly every day of the year.
Here, it is not time that changes. No clocks shifting. No long summer nights or short winter days.
This is something I can count on. And my body has grown to breathe more deeply, root through my toes and connect my inner fire with the great energy in the volcanic lands below me. Plugging myself into the sun and stars above.
In this way, I tend to the light of my heart every single day. I don’t have to plan or think about it. I just know we are going to walk to sunset.
Sunset is an exquisite display of heavenly bliss every single night. And ritual is inevitable in a soul like mine.
A ball of orange balancing at the tippy top of a wave, a silence becomes us. A sort of unspoken rule to just be. Circles of friends, crawling babies and dogs, the motion slows in a way that echoes a collective exhale out across the hillsides.
We have always circled around the fire. Our ancestors, holding council or ceremony, as the glowing flames danced between them. Warming the skin and bones of ourselves and also feeding the fire within. The heart organ. The space of our most loving, intuitive wisdom.
A blazing fire in the sky begins sinking, there before my eyes. My toes spread with ease into the soft, dark, wet sand. I don’t count my breaths. I don’t think. I don’t try and I don’t not try.
The sunset becomes me. And I reflect back, my deepest heartfelt prayers.
Thank you, dear Sun, for holding us in rhythm. And nourishing these lands of bountiful life.
May I contribute to this network of light among us, carrying my own torch into the circle and helping it grow ever wider.
