If you run an education business, you must have done this.

What I believe: A well-built education offer should qualify students by fit, commitment, and readiness, not just by their ability to pay.

I have been away for more than a minute. I'll tell you why later. You should hear this first:

Last week, I listened to an Arabic Tutor for kids complain about his kids (students) having increasing screentimes and no bedtimes, and as a result, focusing less in his classes.

He admitted that the kids who had the least screentime performed best in his classes.

After his rant, he asked me…

“Is there anything I can possibly do to keep the screentimes low and make the kids more focused?”.

The answer to that is something everyone running educational businesses should know, but it's rarely applied.

It's that you have to always re-model your business around the top performing 20% after every cohort.

Here's how to use this:

After every cohort or term, interview your top 20% and look for the things they did in class and outside it. Look for the patterns: the habits, environments, and behaviours they all share.

Make those things into bullet lists and compare the lists after the interviews (you can do this with AI) to see the things most repeated. Then make those things a part of your systems.

Example:

Your students just wrote GCSE, JAMB or just finished your course and you find out that the best students:

1. Have screentime limits

2. Have consistent practice outside class

3. Have at least one parent who is involved

4. Have a sleep routine

In the next cohort, you make these things requirements and not mere suggestions. Your students must submit screentimes, choose a consistent practice time outside class, have sleep routines, and in the onboarding meeting, you tell the parents they’ll have to give weekly reviews on their children to keep them involved.
