Maybe it’s mid-life, maybe it’s the state of the geopolitical landscape these days, but this summer I’m lacking my usual seasonal effervescence and buzz.
Perhaps you’re feeling this way too?
Instead of an urge to rush around doing all the things during the long hours of sunshine, I crave lying under a shady tree with a book.
And why not?
I’m a firm believer in listening to our bodies and living in alignment with our own internal seasonal flows - even if they don’t match the weather around us.
Normally, I slow down in winter and revive in summer. But I had a full-on winter wrapping up my diplomatic career and launching my business. So maybe it’s natural that I hit my fallow season now. Whatever the reason, I’m embracing it!
I’m starting my days slowly, leaving space in my schedule for spontaneity, and opting for restorative activities: meditation, woodland strolls, art for art’s sake, reading, exploring without any objective…
Following my energy ebbs and flows, as I decide what to do each day.
How are you spending your days this summer?
As I slow down this summer, I’m able to be more present, taking time to immerse myself in experiences and fully savour the moments of joy:
The quiet calm that comes from watching a bumble bee flit between flowers.
The beauty of azure skies and wispy white clouds drifting by.
The heady scent of honeysuckle in neighbourhood hedges.
Rejuvenating melodies of songbirds and parakeets chirping in the trees.
Splashes of cheerful colour in murals I stumble across while exploring.
The love and affection of a purring kitty on my belly as I meditate.
In all of these moments, I make sure to pause and savour them for at least 30 seconds to heighten the experience and store it in my long-term memory.
I encourage you to join me in taking a few minutes each day to seek out and savour the little pleasures of life.
