What soothes your soul?

If you’re a parent, chances are you’re feeling a bit frazzled by this point in the summer holidays. While you’re running around looking after everyone else, don’t forget to take some time out for you too.

Think about activities, or rest, that soothe your nervous system, energise or relax you. What comes to mind? Perhaps it’s:

  • Nature in its many forms: forests, flowers, coastlines, canyons...spending time out in nature lowers stress, boosts our immune system and activates the parasympathetic nervous system.

  • Spending time with a faithful furry companion. Stroking or cuddling a pet produces oxytocin (the ‘cuddle hormone’). And of course walking your doggie is a great form of exercise and gives you space for a brain break.

  • Culture: Maybe you need a bit of creative or intellectual stimulation instead. Check out an art gallery or museum, watch a dance performance, or try your hand at a new handicraft. The possibilities are endless.

  • Connection: Enjoy some quality time with friends and loved ones. Okay maybe, the last thing you need is more time with your kids! JK. But catching up with old pals and having a laugh can be a real balm for your soul.

  • Just rest: Nap, meditate, lie under a shady tree reading a great book.

Lean into whatever soothes you this week and notice the positive impact. You’re worth it! ✨

In the summer, for me it’s often time in the sun. Usually strolling through the woods, or lying under a tree chilling with a book or podcast. When I can get to the sea, crashing waves and sand between my toes is such a healer.

I also love just slowing down. Taking time out for a colouring book, or lying down to meditate with a purring kitty on my tummy. Blissful!

I’d love to hear any reflections you have on this prompt. 💬
