A common mistake is to think that inner peace is dependent on what is happening outside of you. Externalizing your peace makes you focus on getting all the parts of your life in order, in the hopes that once everything is set to the ideal that you hold, your mind will finally quiet down. This view that peace starts on the outside and then works its way into you causes great confusion.

The hard truth appears when you do end up making big changes and the tension in your mind does not cease. Your emotional history, deep patterns that have shaped themselves around the pain you carry, will not disappear when you move to a new city, make new friends, or switch jobs. The fuel of inner tension that shapes your perspective and your reactions cannot be relieved without direct observation. Even when you change your external environment, inner tension that remains unobserved will just look for something negative to focus on or it may even fabricate a new problem that helps feed the loop of dissatisfaction and stress.

When you realize that the only way to create substantial peace is to go inward and know yourself, you start to see that there is great power in the present moment. The moment that you are currently in is a crossroads, where the past and the future meet. A powerful choice can be made here where you say no to letting yourself get pushed along by the current of the past and instead intentionally pick new ways of being.

The echoes of the past are felt in the present. The tension that appears in this moment does not need to get replicated. Instead, you can choose to pause to give yourself the time you need for your perception to relax so that you can pick wise actions that lead to harmony and joy instead of chaos and regret.

Inner peace is a choice that you have to make over and over again. One day it will become smoother and your default, but before that it feels like a practice and a constant reminder to slow down, observe yourself, let go, balance your perception, and skillfully live your truth. This is why I wrote my new book Journey: The Year That Changes Everything, to help people build the habit of peace. Peace is possible but it requires repetition and deep self-awareness so that you don’t get swallowed up by old unconscious behaviors that increase the difficulty of life. Journey is designed to help you break old patterns and build a happier mindset.

Real wisdom is understanding that peace starts within you. You can’t reclaim your power if you are always externalizing it and handing it over to others. When you drop the attachment to wanting everything to exist perfectly and start acknowledging that your mindset and your reactions are the primary factors that impact how you feel, you can start to see beauty in your life that you were missing before. Changing your mind is the best way to change your life.
