How AI Can Hurt (Or Help) Workplace Culture

Most conversations about AI seem to start with efficiency. Productivity. Profitability. Revenue.

A lot of people are scared AI is going to take their job. Then there is the meme that says, “AI will not take your job, but someone who knows AI will.”

Let’s pause and examine the assumption underneath that statement.

The assumption is simple: productivity is king. Efficiency is king. If you are not the most productive and efficient, your company will get rid of you.

The emotional response to that assumption is fear.

And that fear reinforces an old transactional dynamic between employer and employee. Work hard. Keep up. Or else.

Rarely, when I hear people talking about AI, do I hear mention of the relational component.

That is because AI is almost always discussed in the context of productivity, not workplace health.

It is not generally framed around employee happiness, fulfillment, or wellbeing.

Recently, I spoke with a business leader whose company was being recognized as a Top Workplace in Colorado Springs.

He said something that stopped me in my tracks.

He told me he would never replace an employee with AI. His vision for AI was to empower employees and make them happier.

That clarity was striking.

This leader had an intentional approach to AI that centered employee wellbeing over profit. That should not surprise us. This is exactly the kind of thinking that creates healthy workplaces where people are valued and culture matters.

In many companies, there is an oppositional dynamic between leadership and employees.

In the worst cases, employees try to get the most money for the least work, and employers try to get the most work for the least pay.

That environment makes replacement conversations easier. Efficiency becomes a weapon.

Healthy workplaces are different. They prioritize team health, purpose, and human dignity. Profit still matters, but it is not the only thing that matters.

Healthy companies cultivate spaces where people want to work. Where needs are met. Where there is purpose and shared vision.

In those environments, AI is not a threat. It is a tool to make life better for the people who work there.

Leadership is not looking to replace jobs. Leadership is looking to remove friction.

Most companies do not realize this is even a conversation they need to have.

The dominant narrative says your worth is measured by output. Healthy workplaces tell a different story.

They honor the innate value of humans beyond dollars and cents.

The call to action is clarity.

Get clear about the principles guiding AI adoption. Be transparent about goals. Communicate openly with employees.

Formalize a human first vision for AI and speak it out loud.

Then implement AI thoughtfully, starting with employee pain points. Friction. Frustration.

When AI solves something that drains energy, people feel relief and gratitude.

For me, AI became a gift when it took over editing and refining my raw creative output. It let me stay in my Superpower and move faster with joy.

That is AI at its best.

AI multiplies what people love. It protects time and energy. It helps people thrive.

What a gift AI could be if we eliminate fear, transactionality, and profit above people thinking.

That is the real workplace delight opportunity.
