Featuring: Dan Rundio, CFO of DataJoe

At Workplace Delight, we love highlighting leaders who think differently about employee well-being. In this conversation, I sat down with my friend and colleague, Dan Rundio, CFO of DataJoe, to talk about how his financial wisdom has shaped a healthier, more sustainable company culture.

When Dan first came into the CFO role, one of the problems he noticed was our unused vacation payout policy. At year-end, employees who hadn’t taken their vacation days received a payout — but that practice was hurting both the business and the employees.

“Is vacation just a back door bonus,” Dan asked, “or is it for people’s mental health and well-being?”

The answer led to a bold experiment: unlimited vacation time combined with an incentive bonus for actually taking at least four weeks off each year. Employees began to prioritize real rest, while the company saved money compared to the old system. It was one of those rare win-win solutions.

Dan’s creative approach didn’t stop there. Recently, he uncovered a payroll tax benefit program that delivers surprising results.

At first, Dan was skeptical: “It sounded too good to be true. Save the company money, improve employee take-home pay, and provide additional insurance benefits — with no out-of-pocket cost? I had to dig deeper.”

After months of research and verification, Dan discovered it was legitimate. Here’s how it works:

  • Employees contribute pre-tax dollars to the program.

  • They receive equivalent insurance benefits (like telemedicine visits or supplemental Aflac-style coverage) tax-free.

  • Payroll taxes decrease for both employees and the company.

On average, employees save about $100 per month, while companies save $600–$900 per employee per year.

As Dan put it, “It does sound too good to be true, but the payroll taxes are ridiculous — and this simply takes advantage of that.”

The one limitation is scale. Insurance providers usually require at least 10 employees to participate, with a “sweet spot” at 30+. For those who qualify, the benefits are clear: higher employee satisfaction, improved wellness engagement, and stronger financial footing for the company.

Dan left us with this thought: “If you already had this benefit, you’d never cancel it. Employees would revolt if you took away $100 a month in take-home pay. And no CFO would want to go back to paying more in payroll taxes.”

It’s a reminder that true employee delight often comes from the creative middle ground — where financial prudence meets human flourishing.
