There Are No Ordinary Moments

If you are a spiritual seeker like I am, you may find yourself at times compartmentalizing your time.

This is my spiritual time..
This is my work time
This is my (children, husband, wife, partner, family) time
This is my sleep time
This is my exercise time
etc etc

The temptation here is to deem some of your moments more important than other ones.

Example.

For the first half of this year, my husband and I were the primary caregivers for one of our grandchildren. He is six, and quite energetic. When he was not in school or out with one of the other relatives, I often found that I was spending a great deal of time either helping him with homework or finding ways to entertain him.

Often I would find my inner voice telling me what I needed to get done instead:

You have to write this week’s blog post.
You have an event to prepare for.
You have not meditated today.
You have not exercised today.
There is just not enough time to get all of these things done.

Here is temptation number one:

To deem the "spiritual" things we do more important than the "other" things.

What if we lived every moment completely aware that every moment was precious and extraordinary?

Yes, even those moments we spend washing the dishes. And taking out the trash. Even the ones we spend at work, or sleeping.

Spending almost six months with my six-year-old grandson turned out to be an extraordinary gift for both of us.

I learned he sees auras (he calls them halos).

We once saw the same spirit during the night. It turned out to be his maternal great-grandfather. I did not share with him what I saw. He told me.

I found he could tell when I was in a bad mood. He said to me, “Why is your halo dull, grandma?”

Around the age of seven, these abilities tend to fade. I was so blessed to see his gifts before they went away. (He turns seven this month!)

This is a profound statement:

There are no ordinary moments.

What if, just for today, you realized that every moment is sacred?

Instead of going to work on Monday morning, wishing it was the weekend, and essentially wishing away most of your week, why not try treasuring the time you are at work? Or washing the dishes? Or even sleeping?

I have begun each morning for years as an opportunity to send love to each person I am to meet and interact with that day. Sometimes I send love to people who I will not necessarily interact with, such as sending love to the President (whether I like him or not), or the neighbors, or anyone else who comes across my mind.

Yes I am completely aware that the moments I spent reading to my grandson were important, even if he grows up and doesn’t remember any of it. But somehow, somewhere, deep inside, there would sometimes be a sneaking compulsion that I should be "doing" something else. I should be more productive. I should be I should be…

No. I should be doing exactly what I am doing.

Who am I to believe that any one particular moment of my life is any less precious than any other moment? Are the moments I spend brushing my teeth less valuable than the ones I spend meditating?

Years ago I realized that every thought that went through my mind was a prayer. Essentially, when I think a thought, no matter what it is, I am praying for something. If I am worrying about something or mad about something, I am basically praying for something that I don't necessarily want. However, I believe that our thoughts create our reality. If we change our perspective just a bit, believing that every moment is a precious gift, how differently might our lives become?

Why not look at every moment in your life as a gift? The wonderful life changing moments, the extremely productive moments, the profound sacred connecting with Spirit moments, and the not so wonderful, perhaps mundane, every day, scrubbing the floor moments. All of them are precious. Take the time to thank each moment for the gift it offers you: one more breath of life, one more chance to experience life with all its ups and downs, challenges and triumphs, sunny days and rainy days.

Just wait. Soon you will be looking at life through different eyes. Eyes of wonder and amazement. The sky will look bluer. The grass will look greener. It will not be such a chore to wash the dishes anymore.

Just for today, stop whatever you are doing, and say: "this moment is important. It is not more or less important than any other moment when I might be doing something more or less exciting, productive, spiritual, etc. The moments I spend washing the windows, rocking grandchildren, taking out the trash, or communicating with loved ones of clients on the other side are all equally important. No one moment is more sacred than any other one moment.

I am learning to appreciate all the moments. I can meditate while vacuuming or sweeping or exercising. I can chat with my Council (what I am calling my Spirit Team these days) while washing the dishes or driving in the car or pulling weeds in the garden.

One of my other grandchildren is extremely gifted at Reiki and receiving messages from Spirit. The other day we went out and had a picnic at the park. I asked her if she was still considering an occupation as a tattoo artist. Her answer surprised me.

She said that often people get tattoos because the pain of the needle helps them to process the emotional pain they are experiencing. She practices her art on people and can feel what they are feeling. She channels Reiki into the pens and the ink when she is drawing on them. They often report feeling better after she is done. (She is not using actual needles. She is fourteen.)

I spent thirty-one years at the Post Office channeling healing into the mail that passed through my hands. This is not a new idea. She was a bit disappointed to learn she did not think of it herself but really she did!

There are no ordinary occupations.

There are no ordinary tasks.

I was chatting with one of my Reiki students who drives for a living. He was sharing that he had not had any opportunity to practice his Reiki skills due to his job. I suggested that he send Reiki into his back seat where people sit. Send Reiki into the wheels of his car and ask that the healing energy be spread into the roads he drove on. There are endless opportunities to offer healing without anyone necessarily needing to give permission or to request the healing energy. When we offer healing (Reiki or otherwise), we just need to set the intention that the healing energy will be spread through time and space with the frequency of Divine Love to whoever happens to need it.

We can channel Divine Love into every moment of every day. We can anchor in the Light of the Divine into the ground under our feet and the random items we pick up off the shelves at Walmart.

Let us wake up every day and decide that each moment we are breathing is sacred. Whether we are meditating or having lunch with a friend, we can be a source of Divine Light and Love.

There is nothing we should be doing instead.

As I get older, I am realizing that the amount of time behind me is more than the time I have left to create memories and enjoy life’s incredible, extraordinary moments. I still desire to be of service, but I am consciously creating times with important people in my life. I am spending less time with people or activities that drain me or don’t feel good. It was fairly easy last week to block a potential client for stepping over an invisible line without apology or guilt. I am realizing that just because I want to be of service to others does not mean I have to continually allow bad behavior.

Just for today, do a little self-inventory.

What feels good and what does not?

What can you add into your daily or at least monthly schedule that may be ordinary but feels amazing? (it goes without saying that I am speaking of activities that do not create harm to self or others.)
