Dedication - This was the image hanging above the bed of my disabled niece when she passed in 2023, a few days after her 17th birthday. She had a hard life, as she was severely autistic; she also had diabetes and would sometimes have seizures. However, the love for her helped reunite our somewhat broken family. Caring for her from the age of 9 until she passed on taught my family how to love, forgive, and work together towards a common purpose. I dedicate the article to my niece Katerina, one of God’s Special Forces, who came to earth in a broken body to teach us what selfless love means. What does evil want more than anything in the world? But can never have?
The answer is True Authentic Love.
Authentic love cannot be forced or be manipulated into… It cannot be created with deception… Because as soon as the illusion is broken or the false image is pierced, what might’ve been true authentic love fades away once the betrayal of trust is known.
Evil acts out of a place of emptiness, a place that is absent of love…
The opposite of love is not hate; the opposite of love is power. Or rather the illusion of power.
The Extra Credit answer is?
For evil to find true, authentic love, it must give up the very things it has paradoxically survived on: deception, manipulation, power, and control.
This is so hard to do because it requires vulnerability, and all the armor that evil has put on has been there to protect itself from the pain it is avoiding.
And as soon as it does, it ceases to be evil; it has been transmuted into Good…
True power does not need to control; it waits, it loves from a distance, and it hopes that those who are the object of its love will eventually learn what love actually means. True love is infinite and is ultimately patient.
The Uber extra credit was Why?
Evil cannot have “True Authentic Love” unless it gives up and sacrifices something! That something is integral to its survival up until that point. The identity (Persona or Mask) that uses power and manipulation to control and dominate another’s will. Evil deludes itself into believing it has true power, but that power is based on manipulation, which is ultimately just a deception. It has created an illusion; therefore, it is not true power.
We will revisit all these questions at the very end of the article, but first, let’s revisit the best definition of love I have ever read.
1 Corinthians 13:4-8
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others; it is not self-seeking; it is not easily angered; it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.

What does the most Anti-Social thing humanity ever created harvest…. well… It harvests our attention and attempts to curate our awareness.
What does Madison Avenue Marketing Sell… well… access to our attention, of course. At the same time, these marketing executives try to curate our Awareness.
So let today’s adventure there…
Everything begins with awareness.
If we are unaware of ourselves… our motivations, our wounds, and the patterns that govern our lives… we rarely seek the answers that lead to meaningful change. A person who believes they have nothing to learn seldom begins the journey of transformation.
That is why awareness is the first step.
The deeper question isn’t, “How do I become happier?” Happiness is wonderful, but it is often temporary. Pleasure comes and goes. Success rises and falls. Validation fades.
The greater question is:
How do I find meaning?
Meaning is what allows us to endure suffering rather than be destroyed by it.
Throughout life, I have noticed a pattern. Those who experience deep pain often become seekers. They ask difficult questions. They wrestle with themselves. They search for truth because their suffering demands an answer.
In my experience, many empaths begin this journey first. Their pain sensitivity (both their own and others’) can become the catalyst for growth. If they find meaning within their suffering, they often emerge stronger, wiser, and more compassionate.
Success, however, can become its own trap.
When someone consistently receives rewards for manipulation, control, or self-centered behavior, there is little incentive to examine themselves. If outward success continues, the cycle repeats. They continue pursuing whatever brings admiration, validation, or what some describe as “narcissistic supply.”
Without awareness, there is little reason to seek meaning.
Of course, change is never impossible. With God, all things are possible. Yet for most of us, transformation comes through struggle.
Suffering has always been one of humanity’s greatest teachers.
For someone with narcissistic traits, meaningful change often requires repeated failures. Eventually, the same patterns begin producing the same loneliness, broken relationships, and emptiness.
At some point, if they are willing, they may begin asking a question they never asked before:
“Am I the common denominator?”
That question can become the beginning of awareness.
Many psychologists have written about how early trauma, abandonment, neglect, or emotional wounds can shape personality. While every person’s story is different, it is understandable that some people develop emotional defenses to survive experiences that once felt unbearable.
Those defenses become armor.
The tragedy is that armor designed to protect a frightened child can imprison the adult.
Over time, the armor becomes so familiar that it no longer feels like protection… it feels like identity.
The mask becomes the self.
To remove it feels less like growth and more like death.
That is why genuine transformation is so difficult.
It requires a person to face the very fears they have spent a lifetime avoiding. They must confront their shadow. They must acknowledge their darkness rather than pretend it does not exist.
Only then can healing begin.
So let’s go back to the beginning of the riddle I shared recently:
What does evil desire more than anything?
My answer is:
True Authentic Love.
Not because evil understands love, but because love is the one thing manipulation can never truly possess.
The extra-credit question was:
What must evil surrender?
My answer is:
Power.
Power seeks to control.
Love seeks to give.
This is why I often say that the opposite of love is not hatred.
Hatred is still emotionally attached.
The true opposite of love is domination… the desire to control another person’s will.
Love cannot exist where freedom does not.
One tragic example is rape. At its core, rape is not an expression of love or even passion. It is an abuse of power and a violation of another person’s autonomy. It demonstrates the complete absence of genuine love.
For anyone trapped behind emotional armor, receiving authentic love requires something terrifying.
They must become vulnerable.
They must risk being seen without the mask.
For someone who has built an identity around protection, manipulation, or control, vulnerability feels impossible. It feels like surrendering the very thing that has kept them alive.
Mystics such as John of the Cross described profound spiritual transformation as “the night of the soul,” a period in which the false self is stripped away before something more authentic can emerge.
It can feel like walking through absolute darkness.
Yet darkness does not have the final word.
Sometimes the kindness of another person becomes the first crack in the armor.
An empath’s compassion cannot change another person by itself, but it can become an invitation. It can expose the illusion that love must always be earned through performance or control.
At first, only a little light enters.
Then another crack forms.
Then another.
Eventually, the light begins to flood into places that once seemed unreachable.
It only takes the flame of a single candle to begin pushing back the darkness.
Hope.
Love.
Light.
These endure.
The armor can crack.
The loop can be broken.
But no one can force that transformation.
It begins with free will.
It begins with humility.
It begins with awareness.
As Jesus taught:
“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” — Matthew 7:7–8
Perhaps that has always been the invitation.
Ask.
Seek.
Knock.
Because those who truly seek the truth are already walking the path toward it.
