This summer field guide session is about black-eyed Susans, the cheery yellow wildflowers that wave from roadside ditches in all 48 contiguous states and every province in Canada. You probably know the ones I’m talking about.
But our drawing/painting technique can be used for any plant you happen to have on hand, so use what you find around you. Monoline is a pared-down technique of drawing a very simple, thoughtful outline and not much else. If you are like me, a person who tends to create extremely detailed drawings most of the time, monoline feels deeply calming and relaxing. Your pencil moves slowly, so your brain slows down as well. The resulting sketches are simple but pleasing. We’ll warm up with some pencil monoline and then use the technique with ink and watercolor.
