The insured list was short: forty-three clocks, one answering machine, one microwave, two table fans, three lamps, one wall thermostat with a manual dial, and assorted paper records, no declared value. The model priced everything at two hundred and eighty-six dollars. A number like that was a little sleeping pill in a file. It told the company to lower its eyelids and pass on.

The beneficiary was the Civic Time Restoration Society. Its public page showed a bronze clock face and three smiling volunteers in gloves. They restored old public clocks and preserved timekeeping heritage. The sentences had that rinsed, grant-tested shine, like apples under supermarket mist.

The system gave me the green path: low-value contents, beneficiary documentation sufficient, salvage requested, close with no action.

I read the file again. The second pass was the real work. The first pass was just verifying the drone’s focal length, which was usually fine. The second pass was where you looked for the names the system had skipped.

I reached out and adjusted the angle of the tablet on my desk until it was parallel to the edge of the blotter. Then I moved it again. “The elevator goes out a lot?” I asked.

“It’s more religious than mechanical,” Rafi said. “It observes private holidays.”

“Does it stop at 2:16?”

Rafi looked at me, waiting for the question to become normal. I let it die there.

The answering machine sat on a small table. Grey plastic. Dead red light. I pressed play. Static, room tone, a click, and then a faint mechanical hum that rose and stopped.

Mara Doss from Civic Time arrived at 3:30. She was small and neat, wearing blue nitrile gloves and paper covers over her shoes.

“The record is clean,” I said. “The clocks are still slow.”

“They won’t be once they’re in the crates,” she said.

I pressed the square plastic buckle of my bag strap until the corner bit into my palm. “The logs in the kitchen drawer are part of the physical claim.”

Mara Doss put the folded hold into her coat pocket. “The Trust has already approved the transfer, Mr. Vance. We aren’t here to dispute the margins.”

The company moved the clocks to evidence storage. At 5:04 true time, the forty-three clocks entered Bay 12. Every face disagreed.
