If I had a pound for every time I’ve been asked why a website isn’t getting traffic, I would be stinking rich.
Your website not getting traffic isn’t some mysterious, technical, algorithm-driven tragedy.
It’s usually very obvious.
… but not what people want to hear.
A common enquiry I hear often:
“We’re not getting any traffic, can you look at the SEO?”
Yes, I can, but honestly?
Most of the time the issue isn’t Google, Wix (or other platform), or some mythical SEO setting you’ve missed or a form of black magic.
It’s that no-one is actually being sent to your website.
BY YOU!!!!
No content. No visibility. No activity.
Just a website. Sitting there waiting for them to come (just like in the Kevin Costner movie).
When a business launches a brand new website, it’s an exciting moment. It looks great (hopefully) and everyone’s happy.
Then…
Crickets.
No posts.
No emails.
No updates.
No consistent effort to get people to the site.
But a few weeks later I’ll get an email:
“We’re not getting any traffic…”
Well. Duh.
Because no one knows it exists.
Websites are not shops on the high street.
People don’t just walk past them.
If you actually want traffic, you need to do something about it:
Share your website (regularly, not once)
Write content that gives people a reason to visit
Show up on social media (properly, not just when you remember)
Send emails
Give Google something to index
Traffic is not a setting.
It’s a result of activity.
Oh, and in terms of Google, I even wrote a handy blog post to send to clients about why Google isn’t finding them because this question gets asked so often.
If you’re not putting anything in… You won’t get anything out.
Think of it like having a gym membership, never going to the gym, but expecting results.
And while we’re here…
Paying someone £700 a month for “SEO” while doing absolutely nothing else?
That’s not a strategy either. That’s just outsourcing hope.
And to be honest, a lot of the crazy money people spend on SEO just goes into someone’s pocket, as they know no-one is going to check on them.
So, instead of hoping to be found, please go out there and make it happen.
I can my clients do just that…
