Holly Hinton · So What? Just another website rant

I am a huge fan of spaghetti bolognese - just not on a website.

Seeing a homepage that has turned into a tangled mess is far more common than you may think.

It happens slowly… over time. Usually with the best intentions. “Just add a section for our launch here”, “I’ve got a new idea”, “oh, and can we just add this too?”.

Before you know it, your homepage is trying to do everything, but achieving absolutely nothing.

Your homepage has one very simple job:

Help the right person quickly understand what you do and guide them to the next step

That’s it. Nothing else.

But most homepages try to explain every service, speak to every audience, and include every idea you’ve ever had.

Visitors have no idea where to start with your visual spaghetti and simply leave.

Most of the time this happens when too many people stick their fingers in the pie, or someone decides that telling the world who they are, rather than how they can help is most important.

Unfortunately, I see this all the time.

And quite often the business is OK with it. After all, they built it so why wouldn’t they be?

But having a homepage that tries to be everything to everyone simply ends up being nothing to nobody.

The result? No-one understands why the website isn’t working to bring in new business, but no-one has ever questioned why.

It’s time to convince the dude who signed this off that there’s a better way…

If your homepage is starting to feel like this, strip it right back.

What is the ONE thing you want people to understand immediately?

For example, at Web Goddess, we offer:

Digital strategies with heart, purpose, and impact.

It doesn’t waffle on.

Be specific and crystal clear about who your audience is.

For Web Goddess, this is simple:

Strategic website design for non-profits and ethical SMEs.

Make sure it’s obvious as soon as people find your site so they know they’re in the right place.

Is it to buy something, book a service or get in touch. Don’t confuse it with every option or you’ll lose them.

If your homepage feels like a spaghetti mess that’s trying to do everything, it’s probably doing nothing very well.

Take some time to refocus your message and build something that actually helps your website hit the right people.

I’m more than happy to help - it’s literally what I do for a living.
