Libbie Bischoff · Type Du Nord

Hey party people!

I am going to try and resist making any excuses for my lack of newsletters! It’s been a wild year so far! Minneapolis and Minnesota at large are still being used for political theatrics and our people are paying the price. If you have any cash to spare, there are still many people who aren’t able to safely leave their homes and therefore can’t work. Here are three places that are collecting donations for rent relief/mutual aid: Smitten Kitten, Phillips Rent Relief, and Twin Cities Trans Mutual Aid. Every dollar helps!!

Because of the rough start to the year, my productivity has been all over the place. I’ve made some progress though and would love to share!

To ease back into type design work, I bribed myself with some fun things to work on. Stockinette is getting some fun extra glyphs. Most notably, some exaggerated caps and emojis!

Stockinette sketches!

I started by looking through a couple mid-century lettering books that I have and collected (via drawing) some different characters that would be great to include. I used this a reference while adding the new characters.

Some extra caps for Stockinette!

I also heavily expanded Stockinette’s language support. I have a handful of characters to make still but I am feeling good about the progress here!

Emojis + Arrows

It’s always fun to add some emojis and extra characters. The graphic designer in me always appreciates when there are extra things in the Glyphs palette for me to use! I have some more I will be adding but if you have any requests/suggestions, let me know in a comment!

Also, there is an in-progress version of Stockinette on my website if you’d like to buy it now before the price increases with it’s final release!!

And in a shocking turn of events, I have started a completely new typeface! It’s still in the very early stages but I am obsessed so far. It’s based off lettering by Samual Welo. A couple friends showed me his work recently and after I saw his Gothic lettering, I was hooked. I did some research to see if it’s ever been revived by anyone but somehow it hasn’t! It’s from his Studio Handbook circa 1935.

Glyph set so far!

I’ve been wanting to make something with medieval/gothic/uncial vibes for a while and as soon as I saw this, I knew it was exactly what I had imagined. My plan is to revive all his characters but set it up in a slightly more usable way. Some of his forms, like h and k, are more lowercase-esque than some of the others. My approach will divide his letters into upper and “lowercase” and I will fill in the blanks with some additional characters. This is called unicase in the type design world: It’s when you use some lowecase forms as capital letters. I’ve always wanted to do a full unicase typeface!

I don’t have a name for this yet so I am simply referring to it as Welo Gothic. It has been fun to challenge myself with some of these forms and I can’t wait to see how it develops. That’s all for now!

  1. I was recently on Diana Varma’s, Talk Paper Scissors podcast! It was such a great conversation and Diana was a delight!! Check it out here. <3

  2. Two really good Minneapolis bands that deserve a listen:

  3. Okay this one might be divisive!! I’ve been on a mac and cheese kick but I like to add tuna, broccoli or collard greens, and buffalo sauce to it. It’s sooo good. I know tuna is not everyone’s fave but it should be!!

  4. I canceled my Spotify subscription. With their politics, price increases, and lackluster payouts for artists — I’ve had enough!! I revived my pre-Spotify music library from an old hard drive and have supplemented with CDs from the library, thrifting CDs, and buying from artist’s directly. It’s nice to own music again and it was as simple as getting an external hard drive and manually adding things to iTunes/Apple Music (aka the old-fashioned way). If I had realized it would be this easy and inexpensive, I would have done it a long time ago. I also revived my old iPod Video and it still works!! That will have my full music library for on-the-go!

  5. I have still been reading a lot! I’ve been really into the Inspector Gamache series from Louise Penny and I’m currently reading Chain Gang All Stars by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah and am loving it!

XOXO,
Libbie
