Description: A nonprofit digital library, founded in 1996, that has archived more than a trillion web pages along with millions of free books, audio recordings, videos, and software programs. Its best-known tool, the Wayback Machine, lets you enter any URL and see snapshots of that page from different dates going back decades.

Why it matters: Web pages disappear or get quietly edited all the time — press releases, news stories, government data. The Wayback Machine lets you check what a page actually said before it changed, and its “Save Page Now” feature lets you archive a page yourself before it’s gone.

Strengths: Free, no login required, enormous scale; run by a nonprofit rather than a platform with an algorithm or ad model to protect; also hosts free digitized books, audio, and video beyond just web pages.

Limitations: Not every page gets captured, and capture frequency varies by site; some publishers block their content from being archived.
