Description: A Danish nonprofit, active in more than 85 countries since 2000, that organizes events where people can “borrow” a real person — a “human book” — for a free, one-on-one conversation about their lived experience with stigma, disability, discrimination, or another difficult topic.

Why it matters: Most efforts to reduce prejudice rely on statistics or campaigns. The Human Library relies on direct conversation between two people, which is harder to dismiss and harder to forget — and it’s been doing this long enough (26 years) to have a real track record.

Strengths: Long-running and internationally established; free to participants; volunteer “books” speak from direct personal experience rather than as spokespeople; hosted by libraries, museums, schools, and community organizations worldwide.

Limitations: Entirely event-based rather than an everyday tool — you have to find an event happening near you, and availability varies a lot by location and season.
