Dear Soul Friends,
When old versions of us are about to die, we often hold on to the past. These versions have become part of our identity. Whether it is a job title, a role we play in this game of life or simply an image of us that we have created throughout our life, shedding our cloaks of conditions is never easy. In a way, it feels as if this version of us slipped near a cliff, now dangling at the edge, desperately calling for help to stay alive. The more we step into our soul, the harder the ego fights for its place.
When we watch this scenario from the perspective of duality, our initial reaction is to do anything we can to save the version that is hanging at the cliff. Yet we are not merely living in this physical realm, and our soul’s call is relentless. We are intertwined with the spiritual realm and to grow we need to dare to clip the branches.
Tapping in the dark of the suspense of our life-movie’s cliffhanger. What will the next chapter bring? While watching television, we feel drawn to immediately press the forward button, often ending up binge-watch the whole series. Seeing what’s next is addictive. Always a step ahead seems to be the right way. However, when we are stumbling into life with our head leading the way, we create an imbalance that can cause us to topple over. Head first into the dirt. The chance to trip is exponentially higher when we don’t listen to our heart. Maybe we are eager to skip forward to the happy ending, because we expect that this finally will provide us the feeling of joy. Still - arriving at the happily ever after of a season we tend to shout in disbelief “Yeah, this only happens in the movies!”. Is it so hard to believe that things actually work out for us?
What if there is no ending? What if life is a series of cliff-hangers? Tune in next week when change is rattling at the door of each protagonist, sweeping the storm of surprise through the dusty house. Why not simply open the door to let the air through, letting our skin being cooled by the refreshing cold?
When our life shifts and changes, it can seem that different versions of us are caught between two episodes. One ending, the other beginning. The space between often feels quite uncomfortable. The mind urges us to know, to plan, to plot, to control. The body asks us to feel, to experience, to pause and be moved by the dance. Sometimes I wonder: which version fights harder - the old or the new? Faith is the breath that helps us move through. To die actually means to live, and when we courageous connect to our inner creator, the next episode naturally flows together - two streams joining together to ascend into the ocean of rhythm. Here we start to confidently surf the waves, in unison with the song of the sea. When we know how to entwine with our innate creative nature, we can decide which versions of us serve us and which keep us stuck in the small insecure childhood shelf of memory.
Especially when undergoing huge shifts, poetry and visualisation can be incredibly soothing. Poetry helps us to remember that we are creators and awakens our courage. Through poetry we can process our feelings, shift our lens and create a new story if the old one doesn’t suit us well. Cliffhanger My knuckles white my muscles tense I stare into her frightened eyes It will work out all is well I whisper trying to soothe the lies her mind keeps singing traces of memories vanish into the wind What if noone likes me anymore? What if I end up alone a stranded mermaid at this wondrous shore? She fights with all her might and here we remain several days and nights and all my attempts to help her see that I now can take care of this version of me make her wiggle and squirm I refuse to let go my fingers firm I pinch her skin and watch the waves crash against the hard and ragged rocks the flowers on her dress impatiently swirl in the ocean breeze urging me to release her innocent body It's time to let her go The gentle graceful voice touches my shoulders a warm and firm embrace There is no need to protect her she chose her way and who are you to decide her fate But who am I without her I cry What if I am too late to change to shift and create this life anew It's not your past versions but what you decide is true how you show up for your present self is what eventually makes you you Sadhbh Adamea
In this poem I played with several voices. It is a conversation between ego, soul and spirit. This is what poetry does for me - she feels, experiences, clarifies, soothes, guides and supports. I will record it in the next days and share it with you, so that you can hear it as well. For now, I encourage you to read it out loud for yourself. Maybe it stirs some energy in you.
I invite you to a poetic exercise, if you are standing at a threshold yourself or find yourself clinging to old versions of you while your soul wants to pull you towards the sun. Get pen and paper ready, take a deep breath in and breathe out. Now answer these questions without thinking much about them.
What would the old version say to the new version right now?
What does the new version say?
Where are you? Describe your surroundings roughly.
Where do you want to be? What does it smell like, taste like, sound like, how does it feel?
I hope you have a similar beautiful spot to write, and if not, that your writing makes your life even more beautiful!
Have a wonderful weekend!
Lots of Love,
