Anthropic has introduced Claude Opus 5, a new flagship model positioned just below its top-tier Fable 5 model while costing about half as much. The company says Opus 5 sets new state-of-the-art results on several coding, software engineering, and knowledge-work benchmarks, offers stronger scientific reasoning and visual capabilities, and improves reliability through better self-verification and iterative problem solving. Anthropic also emphasizes enhanced alignment and safety, keeping pricing unchanged from Opus 4.8 ($5/M input tokens and $25/M output tokens) while adding developer features such as automatic model fallbacks and mid-conversation tool changes.

Microsoft and Mistral AI have expanded their partnership to strengthen sovereign AI offerings in Europe. Microsoft will use Mistral’s European AI infrastructure, powered by Nvidia Rubin GPUs, while Mistral’s Medium 3.4 model and OCR 4 are now available through Microsoft Foundry and Copilot Studio. The collaboration gives European enterprises more flexibility to deploy AI in the cloud or on-premises while meeting regional data sovereignty, security, and compliance requirements. Analysts say the deal reinforces Mistral’s position as Europe’s leading AI model provider and helps Microsoft deepen its presence in the European market, improve multilingual AI capabilities, and diversify beyond its reliance on OpenAI by adding another strategic AI partner. Success, however, will depend on how well the companies integrate their platforms and satisfy Europe’s strict regulatory and sovereignty expectations.

A U.S. federal judge has granted final approval to Anthropic’s $1.5 billion settlement of a class-action copyright lawsuit brought by authors who alleged the company used pirated books to train its Claude AI models. The settlement—the largest known U.S. copyright settlement—ends the first major AI training copyright case to be resolved. It follows an earlier ruling that training AI on books can qualify as fair use, while separately finding Anthropic liable for storing millions of pirated books in a central repository. More than 91% of eligible authors and publishers have already claimed compensation, and the court awarded plaintiffs’ lawyers about $101.6 million in fees, significantly less than the amount they originally requested.

Gemini 3.6 Flash is the new general-purpose “workhorse” model with stronger coding, reasoning, multimodal, and tool-use capabilities while using significantly fewer output tokens. Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite targets high-volume, latency-sensitive workloads at the lowest cost, and Gemini 3.5 Flash Cyber is a specialized model for detecting, validating, and patching software vulnerabilities. Google also notes that Gemini 3.5 Pro remains in partner testing and will be released once it is ready.
