It wasn’t that long ago that “the Justice Department plans to send 1,000 monitors to the polls for the midterms” would have been a reassuring headline. With Trump’s politicization of the Justice Department and ceaseless campaign of election subversion, this announcement is setting off alarm bells instead. While their deployment during the Arizona, Michigan and Minnesota primaries did not prove disruptive, we should be prepared for them to be used to lay the groundwork for claims of stolen elections.
The best thing we can do right now is make sure we have our own people in place to watch the watchmen, document any disturbances, make sure we have evidence to disprove false allegations, and serve as an early warning system for the public.
🙋🏻♂️ We can volunteer to be poll monitors with the nonpartisan Election Protect/866-OUR-VOTE program here at protectthevote.net. Other opportunities to be poll monitors are likely to be offered locally through either our state’s chapter of Common Cause or the League of Women Voters or ACLU affiliate. While these will be particularly important in swing states, they’re useful anywhere there’s competitive elections! 🙋🏽♀️

In the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s gutting of the Voting Rights Act, Black voters across the South are facing dilution of their voting power as racist redistricting makes gains. We’ve seen some heartening signs that they’re responding by showing up at the polls in significantly higher numbers, and we need to do what we can to keep that trend going and help them break through the obstacles being placed in their way.
One way we can help is by sending voter information via personalized postcards to Black voters in North Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, Texas and Alabama. We can do this through the Center for Common Ground’s Reclaim Our Vote campaign. 📬 Let’s get started: 📬

MAKE CALLS WITH CENTER FOR COMMON GROUND
One of the bright spots in our fight against ICE during this bloody summer has been the success of the De-ICE Citizens Bank campaign. Organizers successfully pushed Citizens into winding down its financial relationship with CoreCivic and The GEO Group with a combination of public and monetary pressure, convincing at least two cities and multiple major civic institutions to threaten to divest if the bank continued to do business with the concentration camp operators. Now activists are starting to think more broadly about how we can make crimes against humanity bad business.
The De-ICE Citizens Bank team, writer and educator Sarah Towle, and others are coming together Sunday to launch the Coalition for Values-Based Investment, focusing on how our pension and retirement fund investments are supporting the deportation machine and how we as individuals and collectively can start the process of changing that. 🫱🏾🫲🏼 If we’re interested in how the people can wield financial power, let’s sign up for their launch workshop this SUNDAY at 3PM ET here. 🫱🏻🫲🏿
The Democratic base is increasingly calling for big changes to take on the oligarchs and give working folks a fair shot at the good life, including nominating candidate after candidate committed to Medicare for All. Polling from Data for Progress suggests 63% of voters would support Medicare for All even after being told it would eliminate private insurance and raise taxes, with CBS reporting 90% of Democrats are on board, and a new study out of Yale indicates shifting to this system could save 114,000 lives and more than $1 trillion a year.
In this context, House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries’s stepping back from his pre-leadership support of Medicare For All has been met with frustration. The groundwork for what we can accomplish on health care in the next Democratic trifecta is being laid right now, and we need to make it clear to our leaders that we want them to be bold instead of compromising in advance. 🗣️ National Nurses United is urging folks to reach out to Rep. Jeffries to make it clear how many Democrats want to see this as party policy. We can use their email tool here or borrow the language to call his office here. 🗣️
NO SURRENDER IN ADVANCE ON HEALTH CARE
We have our general election matchups in Florida! Republicans’ extreme gerrymander of congressional lines in Florida have left the GOP hoping for big gains, multiple Democratic incumbents in trouble and not much in the way of pick-up opportunities. But there were concerns from the beginning that their scheming might backfire its way into creating more competitive districts, and we’ll be keeping an eye on emerging possible flips. Here’s a rundown of where we’re starting:
The big surprise of the night came in the Florida Senate race, where progressive state rep. Angie Nixon defeated Lieutenant Colonel Alex Vindman for the Democratic nomination despite being outraised by more than 16:1. Nixon is a former union leader who and voting rights advocate who’s fought to expand child care access and stop corporate price gouging in Tallahassee and is running on Medicare For All and universal free child care, paid family and sick leave, taxing the billionaires and getting corporate money out of our politics and public financing in. She’s in for a tough fight in an increasingly red state, but incumbent Republican Ashley Moody is an appointed replacement for Marco Rubio and a relative unknown. 🙋🏽♀️ We can check out her Mobilize page for upcoming volunteer opportunities here. 🙋🏻♂️
Democratic Rep. Darren Soto is fighting for re-election in the new Florida Ninth District, which saw the largest shift of any district during gerrymandering, from Democratic-leaning to one Trump would have won by 17. His opponent will be Dan Green, a former Trump Defense Department official. Soto has been a voice against offshore drilling during his congressional tenure and led opposition to the citizenship question on the census. 🙋🏻♂️ We can sign up to phonebank for Congressman Soto here. 🙋🏽♀️
Over in the Florida 14th, Congresswoman Kathy Castor’s seat would now have gone to Trump 55-44. Despite this shift, the Center for Politics just moved it from lean GOP to toss-up, and she may benefit from the platform of her opponent. Her GOP challenger will be former state Rep. Mike Beltran, a hardline right-winger who thinks Florida’s six-week abortion ban is insufficient and wants a constitutional amendment ending birthright citizenship and dubs himself MAGA Mike. (He would also be the latest congressional multi-millionaire, with a net worth of $156 million.) Castor has been a leading voice on climate policy and environmental protection. 🙋🏽♀️ Let’s help her stay in office by signing up for volunteer opportunities here. 🙋🏻♂️
Rep. Jared Moskowitz, one of the more centrist Democrats in Congress, held off a primary challenge in the new 25th District and heads into November in what’s widely considered to be a toss-up race. He’ll be up against the GOP’s former Boca Raton Mayor Scott Singer, who has campaigned in lockstep with Trump’s agenda of cuts for social services and tax cuts for the wealthy while Moskowitz has called for a restoration of the ACA tax credits and Medicaid. 🙋🏻♂️ We can help spread his message on social media here. 🙋🏽♀️
One of the few seats where Democrats are immediately seeing opportunity is the Florida 27th, a heavily Hispanic seat that shifted sharply to Trump in 2024 and in this political environment may shift just as sharply back. Incumbent Congresswoman Maria Elvira Salazar, notable for talking a good game about pushing back on Trump while quietly voting for his economically destructive agenda, will face Democratic challenger and longtime TV news anchorman Eliott Rodriguez in November. He’s emphasized the cost of living, the Florida insurance crisis and MAGA politics of cruelty towards immigrants in his campaign. 🙋🏽♀️ We can sign up for volunteer opportunities for him here. 🙋🏻♂️
In the Florida Seventh, Rep Cory Mills, who may well be the first-ever member of the U.S. House of Representatives to serve with an active restraining order against him, was defeated in the GOP primary, suggesting that somewhere between the multiple domestic abuse claims, alleged revenge porn threats, stolen valor, violations of campaign finance laws and armed deals with foreign nations Republicans finally found an uncrossable line. Former TV journalist Ryan Elijah will be the Republican nominee in a district Trump would have won by 13 points, and will be a tougher opponent for Democratic pick Navy captain and former NASA chief of staff Bale Dalton. 🙋🏻♂️ We can sign up to volunteer for Bale here. 🙋🏽♀️
We also saw one of the most hate-filled members of Congress, notorious Islamophobe Rep. Randy Fine, win his primary against another noxious hatemonger, notorious antisemite and Holocaust denier Dan Bilzerian in the Florida Sixth. The tagline to Alien vs. Predator comes to mind.
