In 2024, more than 790,000 kids got early learning, meals, development screenings and health care thanks to Head Start – and more than a million parents rely on the program to look after their kids so they can go to work. It offers relief for areas with few child care options and saves working families almost $12,000 a year. Naturally, eliminating it was a plank of Project 2025, and the Trump regime is trying to quietly strangle the program.
Right now, they’re pushing an “overhaul” putting more than 1400 regulatory provisions of this incredibly successful program on the chopping block. Their new proposed rule would eliminate staff-child ratio and child size requirements, remove limits on suspensions and expulsions, weaken the standards for health and mental health services, lower the qualification standards for teachers, weaken background checks, remove guidelines around supporting children with disabilities, and replace support for bilingual learning with an English instruction requirement for most programs.
🗣️ We need to push back. The Department of Health and Human Services is accepting public comments on the proposal until October 6th. Let’s register our objections here – we can find sample language to work from via the Coalition for Human Needs here. We can also urge our members of Congress to take action to protect Head Start – we can use a call tool from Moms Rising here and an email tool from the National Campaign for Justice here. 🗣️
COMMENT AT THE FEDERAL REGISTER
The fight against the surveillance state is coming to cities and towns across the country, with the spread of automated license plate readers (ALPRs) like Flock. These are dystopian tools that ICE and more than 5,000 law enforcement agencies are using to spy on our movements and track our relationships, currently conducting more than 20 billion scans per month. They’re showing up on our street corners, grabbing our data with little to no explanation of what’s getting collected and who can see it.
Activists are starting to push back. We’re in the midst of a national week of action led by the DeFlock campaign to spotlight efforts to stop the spread of ALPRs. More than 450 communities are participating. 🙋🏻♂️We can find events to attend near us here, sign up to connect with others interested in this fight in our area here, and check out the directory of local groups already in this battle here. 🙋🏻♀️
JOIN THE WEEK OF ACTION NEAR YOU
The ACLU has also rolled out a “Get The Flock Out” toolkit, consulting with the folks who have gotten ALPRs removed in their area and pulling together tools, resources and best practices to help us push back. It will help us find where ALPRs are deployed in our area, give us model bills and tools to pressure our state and local governments to cancel their contracts and outline steps to keep them from expanding their reach. ⚙️ We can check it out and put it to use here. ⚙️
And if we want to learn more about this tool, its uses and abuses and the campaigns against it, Red Wine and Blue is here to help! TONIGHT at 8pm ET, we can join computer scientist and privacy researcher Jen Golbeck to get briefed on how this technology works, how the data gets shared between agencies, and what it means for our privacy rights. We’ll also hear from local residents who are fighting to get these cameras removed from their cities. 🏫 We can join this webinar here. 🏫
Today marks exactly 11 weeks until Election Day. And as we’re burning up the phones and hitting the doors to make sure we get the votes we need, we also need to be putting in the work to make sure those votes matter in the face of Trump’s election subversion.
Local and national organizations across the country alike are wading into the fight, and this is a great moment to skill up and get involved. Tomorrow, Indivisible will be holding the first session of a two-part election protection training at 8PM ET, talking about potential scenarios, being a trusted messenger in the face of disinformation and more of what we can do to ensure every eligible voter can vote, every vote is counted, and the results are honored and the winners seated. 🏫 Let’s sign up to join them here. 🏫
SKILL UP ON ELECTION DEFENSE @ 8PM TMW
Rogan’s List has also pulled together an action page with volunteer opportunities to get folks the information and IDS they need to vote, push decisionmakers to respond aggressively to attacks on our elections, monitor and work the polls, and prepare to take to the streets. 🙋🏻♂️ We can check out and get engaged here. 🙋🏽♀️
VOLUNTEER TO PROTECT THE MIDTERMS
There are a lot of big structural and policy changes we need to make in this country that are out of reach without a stable and sizeable majority in favor of them in the U.S. Senate. And with the Democratic Party having no easy road to victory in a significant number of states across the Midwest and Great Plains, it’s not clear how we can secure that majority. We need to think boldly and creatively about how to change the math.
One emerging theory: we can shake things up by having the Democrats pull out of races and rally behind independent candidates unassociated with their brand. These will be economic populists aiming to bring together Democrats, centrists, anti-system voters and GOPers tired of Trumpism. They won’t be with us on all the issues as senators, but they also won’t be beholden to the right-wing extremists, will be willing to take on the oligarchs and will deny the GOP crucial organizing votes.
We’re testing how this works electorally in multiple states this November, including with former state rep Todd Achilles in Idaho and military veteran Brian Bengs in South Dakota. But our best shot at succeeding is with Dan Osborn in Nebraska. Osborn is a mechanic and union leader who pioneered this strategy last cycle, running well ahead of Kamala Harris and coming within six points of a stunning upset of GOP Senator Deb Fischer. In this year’s much more favorable political environment, he’s challenging billionaire megadonor senator Pete Ricketts: blasting his funding by AI, AIPAC, defense contractors, Big Ag and Big Pharma and pushing for real crackdowns on gerrymandering and insider trading along with banning surveillance pricing and scrapping the cap on Social Security.
🙋🏻♂️ We can sign up to phonebank for Dan Osborn six nights a week here, join his data and research team here and his digital organizing team here. 🙋🏽♀️
The Democratic trifecta in Virginia has produced results for us, and in November they’ve given us the chance to do even more, putting constitutional amendments on the ballot guaranteeing reproductive rights, automatically restoring voter rights to Virginians once they’re released from prison and securing marriage equality. With Virginia providing the closest access to abortion clinics for countless Southern women and the Trump regime continuing to hint that they’ll crack down on access to medication abortion, making sure folks vote Yes on 1 (yes, again) can help us build strong walls to protect this safe haven.
☎️ We can join a Yes on 1 phonebank with the folks at Reproductive Freedom For All TONIGHT from 6-8PM ET here, and sign up for future shifts every Tuesday starting September 1st and every Thursday beginning September 24th. We can also join their volunteer list to learn of textbank and canvassing opportunities here. 🗣️ ☎️
