A grassroots efforts to get our kids fed is taking hold far outside the usual bastions of progressive policy. This fall, North Dakotans will vote on Measure 2, a constitutional amendment that would require public schools to provide free breakfast and lunch to their students daily. The weight of the GOP establishment is working to defeat this initiative, and we’re going to prove that feeding kids is popular everywhere. ☎️ TONIGHT and NEXT MONDAY, Together for School Meals is holding phonebanks to urge voters to support Measure 2. Even as Congress shows a little spine in pushing back against Russell Vought’s proposed rule politicizing billions in federal grants, he’s continued to try to ram it through. In June, the National Science Foundation quietly updated its Proposal & Award Policies & Procedures Guide to align with the not-yet-finalized OMB rule, essentially attempting to implement it before it’s approved. But like the proposal itself, this guidance is subject to public comment.

Over the last four years, 11 states have passed “camping bans” that effectively criminalize being homeless, along with 300 municipalities. In Utah, lawmakers are rallying support behind building a “campus” for “drug and mental health treatment” northwest of Salt Lake City, in what looks an awful lot like a proposal for a homeless detention camp.
This is America in the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s ruling in Johnson v. Grants Pass upholding the criminalization of the unhoused and Trump’s executive order demanding punitive solutions and civil committal over housing first and harm reduction. We’re widely adopting policies pushed by a right-wing think tank founded by Palantir co-founder Joe Lonsdale, who has significant investments in private prisons.
Advocates are fighting back. 🏫 On Wednesday at 8PM ET, the National Homelessness Law Center and the ACLU are holding a mass call on the Housing Not Handcuffs campaign, talking about how this playbook of cruelty against the unhoused is diluting civil rights for all Americans and actions to support policies that protect housing, dignity, and civil rights.
