The fate of the nation in the next few years will in no small way be determined by a handful of voters in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Between the two states, there are at least five prime pick-up opportunities in the House, along with potential Democratic trifectas in state government that will allow us to redraw congressional lines and provide a bulwark against election subversion in 2028. We have less than 11 weeks to identify, persuade and turn out the folks we need.
This weekend marks a special push by the coordinated campaigns in both of these states, with extra door-knocking shifts, organizing events, and volunteer recruitment pushes. They could use some air support. ☎️ We can sign up for phonebank shifts tomorrow and Sunday afternoon for Pennsylvania here and throughout the day all weekend in Wisconsin here. ☎️

We’ve got some momentum behind the push to stop Russell Vought’s proposed rule politicizing billions in federal grants, with Senate Republicans accepting a block on the implementation of this policy during the length of the continuing resolution to fund the government through the midterms. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) reports the GOP explicitly rejected an effort to kill the rule outright, but our voices are clearly being heard on this disastrous measure. It’s time for us to double down. Stand Up for Science is lobbying members of Congress to #RevokeTheRule, and they’re asking us to add our voices. 🗣️ We can find an email tool we can use to reach out to them here. 🗣️
✍🏽 We also have until Monday to submit public comments on another effort to lock in this policy, the National Science Foundation’s update of its Proposal & Award Policies & Procedures Guide to align with the not-yet-finalized rule. We can read more here and weigh in here. ✍🏻
AI companies have been deploying increasingly autonomous systems and recent incidents show these systems slipping out of human control. The technology is advancing more rapidly than humans’ understanding of it, and it’s not just outsiders who are alarmed by the pace: in July, more than 1,300 employees from leading AI companies signed an open letter voicing concerns that AI is developing faster than humans’ ability to understand, oversee, or control it.
H.R. 9917, the AI Kill Switch Act, is a bipartisan bill that would require AI companies to maintain the technical infrastructure to slow down, suspend, or fully shut down their models, report serious safety incidents, and submit systems for mandatory testing before deployment. 🗣️ ControlAI is asking us to reach out to our reps to cosponsor and pass this legislation to ensure these companies are able to reign in their own technology in an emergency. We can urge them to act using scripts from 5Calls here. 🗣️
Facing threats, political pressure and a Supreme Court majority that has frequently not had their backs, lower court judges are still doing vitally important work to keep this administration’s power within the bounds of the law. (Making it all the more important Democrats hold the line on keeping Trump from stacking the courts.) Let’s acknowledge their work and send encouragement to keep fighting.
Judge Christopher Cooper blocked the Department of Health and Human Services from an attempt to gut $17 million funding to teen pregnancy prevention programs. Teen pregnancy has decreased about 70% since these programs were funded in 2010 – a trend the forced birthers apparently want to reverse. ✍🏻 Let’s write a note or postcard to thank Judge Cooper for at least temporarily blocking HHS from further these congressionally-approved initiatives. ✍🏽

Judge Dolly M. Gee has ordered an independent monitor be appointed to oversee the conditions migrant children are being subjected to in ICE captivity, following confirmed reports of many instances of longer-than-legal periods of detention, inadequate medical care, and other unacceptable conditions. Children are not supposed to be detained longer than five days without going through legal process, but some have been held for up to 323 days. ✍🏽 Let’s write a note or postcard to thank Judge Gee for trying to address the appalling abuses of human rights children in detention are being subjected to. ✍🏻
