I’ll start.

School starts tomorrow, and for the past few days I’ve had the sense that I need to do everything I wanted to do all summer RIGHT NOW. That’s because once the bell rings, I climb into a greased gerbil wheel and sprint.

No one told me to approach my teaching job this way. I’ve adapted that all on my own. And since I spent the summer renovating a house, I didn’t do much of anything but renovate a house. We pulled up mostly finished three months to the day of when the demo/reno started, and we had a couple of weeks of summer left over. I looked at the kayak and the canoe and had a moment’s panic because I’ve spent very little time in either of them. There was no down time. I was sprinting on a different kind of gerbil wheel.

And then it hit me. I had a life during this renovation, and I do have a life after school starts. I see friends, I read (non-work-related) books, I watch movies, I try new things in the kitchen, I even travel. And this panic I’ve felt every end-of-summer is completely self-induced and I should knock it off.

So I started planning non-work things for this week and the week after and the week after that. Saying goodbye to summer when you haven’t had one is just dumb. Better to extend the season.

Your turn.
