I’m in France, teaching a permaculture course with my dear friend Alfred Decker, who does amazing work using permaculture to support refugees, train teachers, and has just opened a new Barcelona Permaculture Hub. We’re giving an online talk together on Friday on Why Social Permaculture? Spoiler alert—because people are always the biggest constraining factor in any system. Intentional communities don’t fail because the lettuce bolts, and political movements don’t implode due to a software problem. They fail because of conflict, often caused by communication challenges, misunderstandings, and people being…people! But there are some principles and practices that can help us do better.

Social permaculture is about connection – between people, economies, and governing structures – and creating the conditions for humans to flourish on a societal level. The ethics and principles of permaculture suggest a strong critique of current forms of social organisation and economic relationships. Learning about ecological principles and patterns can help us to transform our human interactions and organisations to be dynamic, responsive to change and a means of flourishing for everyone involved.
