Kaylee Kim just completed her first film, Umma’s Cut, a funny and poignant short documentary about her mom, Saehee, who decides to make her first film at the age of 50. Kaylee teaches her mom to edit in a lovely story about the process of aging, reinvention, and staying creative.
Keep an eye out for Umma’s Cut on the festival circuit, it’s worth a watch.

Kaylee is a great assistant editor, and she’s also edited a number of short films. Now, with Umma’s Cut, she’s a director in her own right. I know a lot of assistant editors who are transitioning into different roles, so I wanted to talk to Kaylee about her career trajectory. This interview offers some insights into what that path can look like for young filmmakers today.
This will be the first in a monthly series of conversations with other filmmakers about all things editing.
As a bonus, I used this video as an excuse to teach myself After Effects. So, I hope you all enjoy my totally deranged intro! Theme music by the inimitable Jerrad Moore of Mvskoke Media.
And now, for our feature presentation…
