The fourth boat

Someone walked into the shop last week and found three rope coasters sitting on the table — two with an anchor, one with a small sailboat, hand-painted by the youngest pair of hands in the studio.

He wanted four. Specifically, another with a boat.

We had one. So we made one more.

This is a small story, but it tells you something about how the studio actually works. Nobody plans a coaster collection in advance and waits for it to sell. Something gets made because it felt right that day — jute, cotton rope, a motif painted in white or blue, simple enough that a teenager with a steady hand and a free afternoon can do it properly. It sits on the table. Someone notices it. Someone wants more of exactly that one.

So we make more of exactly that one.

There is a version of this business that would scale the anchor motif, print it, standardise it, sell it by the dozen. We have thought about this and decided against it, every time. The hand that paints these is not trying to be consistent. It is trying to make a good anchor, and then another good anchor, and the small differences between them are the entire point. A printed version would be faster and worse.

The cotton rope ones came next, almost by accident — white instead of jute, blue instead of white, a quieter palette for a quieter customer. We made them while we were already set up for the others, which is usually how a new colourway gets born here. Not from a plan. From momentum, and an open jar of paint, and someone willing to keep going for one more round.

A kitchen renovation also started this week — different scale entirely, different part of the studio's work, but the same instinct underneath it. Someone wants something specific. We figure out how to make exactly that, properly, by hand, at whatever scale it needs to be.
