The back to school buzz has the topic of closet organization fresh on my mind and has been in lots of my conversations lately with friends and followers.
My closet used to make me anxious. Now it takes 30 minutes to reset.
This is a great time of the year to do a closet edit. We’re between seasons, and getting ready to head into a fuller fall season with back to school, then the holidays. Before things get crazy busy- taking the time to access what isn’t working anymore (and why) what needs to go and what might be is missing, will set you up for a less stress with less stuff.
Here’s The Closet Reset Method™ I created and use in my own closet and with my style clients— it’s just 5 steps, and zero overwhelm. The key to success is to just start!
Step 1: Pull anything untouched in 90 days. As you sort through each piece ask yourself these 3 key questions: Does it fit? Do I love it? Do I actually wear it?
Step 2: Sort into keep / mend / let go — no maybe pile.
Step 3: Only rehang what gets an honest yes. Store what’s not for this of life. Maternity, postpartum, seasonal pieces, special occasion wear-keep them, just don’t let them crowd your everyday wardrobe.
Step 4: Group by outfit, not by category.
A closet reset isn’t about getting rid of everything. It’s about creating a wardrobe that supports the life you’re living today.
When your closet feels lighter, getting dresses becomes easier. Decision fatigue disappears. And you start wearing more of what you own. That is the goal- to be an outfit repeater, what a wardrobe you love and get excited to wear.
You can do this. I’m cheering you on friend.
I am desperately needing rhythms of rest in my weekly schedule again. I used to be much more disciplined in the spiritual practice of sabbath. Taking time each week to be off my phone, be present with my family, spending quality time together- unplugged, unhurried, to rest and remember what really matters.
This has taken a back seat to the fullness of our lives with two demanding jobs (my husband in law enforcement, and owning my own business), kids in the middle years with all the activities, a home to care for, etc. And I am feeling the effects of going hard for the past year- and I’m weary.
I know this is God’s way of getting my attention- pregnancy is forcing me to see the physical limits I now have in my third trimester, forcing me to need to slow down and actually rest. Why is rest so hard?
Being “productive” and “busy” has been the priority and norm for so long, and it’s come with a cost. It’s not sustainable, and this is what I’m learning again- the hard way :)
The Lord has been convicting me the past few months that I need rest and to rely on Him to sustain me. That my striving through productivity is stealing my peace and causing me miss the life God has called me to- one of contentment, joy and love. I started re-reading this book on Sabbath the past few weeks. It’s such a good one with practical tips for how to bring the weekly rhythm of sabbath into your schedule and the importance of why we need soul rest. Jesus offered the simple practice of rest as a natural, and essential companion to our work (He was the ultimate example of this). Learn from me, he invited, and you will find rest for your souls (Matthew 11:28-29).
I’m still working through what our weekly sabbath looks like- it’s different for everyone. For now it looks like choosing a day each week to get off my phone, completely unplug and lay down my work (which is never ending), spending time as a family outside, playing games, eating a delicious meal, focusing on contentment and thanking God for ALL the blessings in our lives right now. Each week is different for us choosing a day to rest, it has to with our schedules, and I’m learning that’s ok. There’s grace in it all- God just wants my undistracted heart.
So here’s to finding new rhythms of rest amongst the fullness of life. The busyness doesn’t ever stop, but I can fight it by choosing to lay down all the distractions to rest my soul, remembering the true author of my peace and contentment- Jesus.
I’m praying for you friend- and you seek rhythms of soul rest, too.
Adding rich tones and textures that “feel” like Fall to my summer outfits makes them seem new and fresh. These suede loafers are the perfect shoe to transition my summer shorts and dresses to jeans and trousers laster this season. And they are insanely comfortable.
Layering creatively this time of year with a cotton sweater tied around your shoulders or waist can bring a styled touch and interesting texture to a basic outfit like a cotton shirt and wide leg pants. This is when getting creative with your accessories, like scarves, jewelry, shoes and handbags can make your repeated outfits feel new and exciting. Shop this look
Adding chocolate brown tones to your outfits when the weather is still warm is another easy way to transition your summer outfits to feel like fall. This woven leather tote is the perfect everyday bag that looks elevated and is so practical for mom and work life. Shop this look
I’ve curated The Brown Edit if you’re looking for some great staples to add to your wardrobe to wear now and into the fall/winter season. This easy to wear color of having a huge moment in fashion right now- and I’m here for it.
As schedules get busy with back to school, I love having easy, hearty, week night dinner recipes to throw in the crockpot when I’m short on time and ideas. This delicious and healthy chili recipe is so good and also makes for great leftovers. Enjoy.
What are you doing to prepare your heart and your home for the upcoming fall season? A closet edit? Finding time of rest in the busy, trying a new recipe?
Until next Thursday…
I hope getting dressed feels just a little easier this week.
Sarah 💛
