Have you ever felt that life is guiding you to a particular place? That’s exactly how I felt when I traveled to Morocco – little did I know that the ocean would become my greatest teacher.
When I returned to Morocco in December 2022, what seemed like an instinctive decision turned into something much greater – a transformative experience where surfing taught me some of life’s most important lessons. I never imagined that surfing would become a key to my own trauma healing and personal growth.
Surfing is more than just a sport to me. It’s a reflection of life’s most important lessons: trust in yourself, facing fear, letting go of judgment, and finding humility in nature’s power. In this article, I’ll share how surfing became a tool for trauma healing and how its lessons apply to life beyond the waves. Whether you're an avid surfer or not, these insights could resonate with your own journey of self-discovery and growth.
This journey taught me a lot about myself, and much of it was thanks to surfing. Before I came to Morocco, I had surfed only a few times, but it was never a priority. In my early twenties, I attended a surf camp in Portugal. While I had fun, I mostly surfed because I thought it looked cool, not because I had a deeper purpose. Back then, I never considered that surfing might help me experience personal growth and trauma healing – or that it would play such an important role in developing trust in myself.
In December 2022, I felt an intense pull to return to Morocco. I didn’t know why, but I followed my instincts. When I arrived, I had a profound sense of connection, as if I were exactly where I needed to be.
I spent a few days in Marrakesh before heading to my friend’s house near Agadir, where I was asked to look after her home and dog, Lola. She recommended a surf instructor named Maryam for my first real surf sessions in years. Maryam el Gardoum is a compassionate, passionate woman who has won several Moroccan surfing championships. She founded the Dihya Surf School in Tamraght, a women-led surf school that encourages more women to ride the waves. Read an article about Maryam in Condé Nast Traveler here
What stood out to me was how Maryam seamlessly integrates surfing with life wisdom. She taught me more than how to surf – she guided me through how to navigate life with trust, courage, and the ability to face fears. Her approach helped me experience deep trauma healing through the lessons of the ocean.
One of the most powerful insights I gained through surfing was the importance of self-trust. Can I trust myself to catch the wave, time it right, and get back on my feet when I fall? Maryam taught me that every wave presents a new opportunity. She never gave up on me and expected the same from me. Her belief in my ability to catch every wave helped me develop the same belief in myself.
Surfing is an experience that forces you to feel instead of overthinking. I had to stop analyzing every move and simply connect with the wave. The question wasn’t “Am I doing this right?” but rather “Can I feel the wave beneath me?” Maryam emphasized that surfing is about being in harmony with the ocean’s energy. Over time, I learned to feel the drop, recognize the right moment to rise, and let go of control.
Fear is not only something you encounter in surfing, but also in life. Over and over, I asked myself, “Can I really take this big wave?” The fear of falling or being swallowed by a wave – getting caught in the “washing machine” – can be overwhelming. But the only way to improve is to face that fear directly, step by step. I learned to accept the nervousness and paddle out anyway, trusting that even if I fall, I will rise again. In my work as a coach, I help people face their fears mindfully and build trust in themselves.
At first, I struggled with shame. “Will people laugh at me if they see me on the board?” I thought. But surfing taught me to shed these insecurities. It doesn’t matter what others think; what matters is the joy and fulfillment I feel when riding a wave, no matter how imperfect it may look from the shore.
The ocean has a way of humbling you. No matter how skilled you are, the ocean is always more powerful. It reminded me of my own insignificance – not in a negative way, but in a way that made me acutely aware of nature’s force. It’s a beautiful reminder that we never truly have control. We are merely guests on this planet, and likewise in the world of the ocean.
Timing is everything in surfing. Knowing when to paddle, when to stop, and when to wait. It’s about reading the waves and understanding their rhythm. This lesson applies far beyond surfing. It’s about knowing when to act and when to remain still, trusting that the right moment will come when you are patient enough to read and feel the signs. Just like the waves of the ocean, life’s challenges show us that healing and growth take time. As a coach, I help you find the right rhythm for your journey.
Surfing is more than just a sport to me. It’s a mirror reflecting profound life lessons. From learning to trust myself to embracing fear, letting go of judgment, and finding humility in nature, every wave has taught me something new. Each future wave will continue to offer new lessons.
What began as an instinctive journey became a transformative experience. I’m not only learning to surf better – I’m learning to live better.
