We took a short boat trip out to a small Carribean island off the Placencia peninsula where the Placencia Yacht Club is situated. It’s a kind of long wooden jetty with a turquoise wooden building at the end, raised above the warm blue waters, which houses a bar with tables and hammocks.
It was a humid afternoon, but the ocean breeze kept the warm air moving. We were greeted by the owner, Carolina, and her three lazy dogs who slumber on the deck. She kindly agreed to allow me to play the mixtape, so long as it was part of the Yacht Club vibe. Of course: I curated the mixtape especially for this place, for this moment!
We linked phone to bluetooth speaker and pressed play.
We jumped into the waters, relaxed in the hammocks, ordered Negronis. I had to bring my own Martini because it was difficult to source it in Belize. As I listened to the music overlooking the horizon, I knew that I would miss this place. I was already experiencing a future longing to come back. The mixtape, playing in the background, began almost to spiritually connect me with this time and place, creating an emotional anchor.
Now that I’m 10,000 miles away and a month has already passed, when I listen to the mixtape, I can transport myself to that moment, that meaningful moment that I must remember and that I now long for. Mixtapes are meaningful.
We’ve been looking at alternative woods for the Finisterre baffles. We've now sourced some Mongoy wood, also known as Ovangkol, which originates from the tropical regions of West Africa. This dense, reddish honey-hued hardwood, with its straight grain and subtle dark veins, delivers a hardness that rivals rosewood and a natural resistance to humidity and decay that promises enduring loudspeaker performance.
Its high density dampens unwanted vibrations while enhancing tonal warmth and clarity, allowing midranges to bloom and the highs to sparkle. Keep your eyes out for the first preview.
We've proudly joined forces with the Spain Audio Group, an association of Spanish HiFi producers, manufacturers, and artisans including Ars-Sonum, Perujo Audio, and now Saltwood Sounds - all dedicated to elevating audio craftsmanship. This alliance opens doors to knowledge sharing and innovation. A perfect moment: the sun dipped behind jagged peaks, Ben Harper played, and even prompted a few tears of emotion amongst some of us in the Saltwood Sounds crew. But as the sky became dark, we boogied with the post-show DJ till dawn.
The International Festival of Cultures, Pirineos Sur, is a musical event with more than three decades of history. Every year it is held in the stunning natural surroundings of the Tena Valley, in the heart of the Aragonese Pyrenees. It has become an almost regular pilgrimage for the Saltwood Sounds crew.
