A philharmonic performance

I was listening to a performance by an orchestra. I think they were performing Mozart.

Suddenly one note almost brought me to tears. It was a perfect note, a perfect chord.

I couldn’t believe how perfect and harmonious it sounded to me. The way it resonated so delicately through the auditorium, suspended long enough to prompt something in me.

But what overwhelmed me was the realisation and recognition of the combined and cumulative human effort that was required to create that sound.

Somebody had to arrange the orchestra in a particular way.

Somebody had to compose the music with these instruments to achieve the melodies, notes and chords: tension and resolve.

Somebody had to design and standardise the instruments so that the composer can combine the sound of all the instruments into a harmonious note.

Somebody had to design and build the building to make it acoustically suitable.

Somebody had to archive and publish the notes and ensure generations later can play them.

The performers had to practice countless times so that at the exact moment they all move their bows at the same time and replicate that sound.

Somebody had to sponsor all this.

And at every stage, somebody had to have the vision and obsession to achieve that perfect ethereal sound. It wasn’t just a note that moved me, it was the performance, obsession, collaboration and harmony across time that struck me. An empathy with likeminded humans who have endeavoured tirelessly to create a moment to move you. That’s what it’s all about. That’s the spirit of Saltwood too.

This season, Saltwood received a “Highly Commended” award from HiFi+ magazine, with words that made us pause and smile:

“Saltwood Sounds is one to watch.”
“Extremely articulate.”

Articulation is a word we care deeply about.

Like with the orchestra, we’re trying to replicate that perfect articulate sound. It’s about allowing every component: material, driver, cabinet, room, to do its work, so that creativity can emerge naturally, without being pushed.

We are immensely proud to have received an award and the recognition within a recent review.

The Málaga Audio Show unfolded under grey skies and wet pavements, and somehow, that made everything better in a city usually associated with beaches, street cafes and rooftop bars.

Sharing a space with Ars-Sonum, Perujo Audio, and Wires 4 Music and others, we found ourselves part of a broader Spanish ecosystem that values quality, materiality, and musical excellence over spectacle.

We came away with:

• New contacts

• New partnerships forming

• And a growing presence within the Spanish audio scene

We also met the CEO of Audiophile Directory, a platform mapping serious audio makers and listening rooms worldwide, an encouraging sign that Saltwood is increasingly part of a global network.

We’re delighted to share that the Finisterre speakers are now available in Cambridge, in partnership with Criterion Audio - a place that understands listening as a ritual and a combination of all the senses.

In the new year, we’ll be hosting listening events there - small, intentional gatherings where music is chosen carefully, volumes are sensible, and conversation happens after the needle lifts.
