Neal Taylor · The Saltwood Sounds Quarterly

We’ve been on the lookout for different woods for the variations of the Finisterre Speaker fronts. Whilst in Guatemala, Neal attempted to source Cocobolo - a rare tropical wood found only in the Central American Pacific coastlines. Cocobolo is used by guitar makers due to its density. It also has a beautiful rich dark reddish colour. It wasn’t easy sourcing cocobolo directly though. The closest he could source the wood was in neighbouring Nicaragua. After discussions with local traders and tree fellers, it was concluded that the minimum amount of lumber that the traders were willing to sell was way beyond Saltwood Sounds current needs. Instead we have now been looking at Oak, Juniper and Rosewood which are more locally sourced in Europe.

We have improved the audio measuring equipment and made updates to the crossover design.

With the latest cross-over design (XOv2), we are measuring a flat frequency response (+/- 3dB) between 35 Hz to 22,000 Hz. A slight dip and lower plateau are seen in the very low frequency (between 20 and 30 Hz). Bass is extended but tamed. The F3 is around 25 - 30 Hz and the F10 is around 19 Hz. The cross-over is around 1250 Hz, with the combined response nicely flat and supported. The low-pass filter is third order and rolls-off smoothly to reduce the cone-break up responses around 5kHz to negligible levels. The high pass filter is a second order and rolls-off smoothly. In other words: it sounds pretty good.

One of the most exciting tracks has been ‘Galaxies’ by Hannes Bieger. Videos of him jamming with the retro synthesizers caught our attention. Upon closer listening on our system, we loved the opening track ‘Apollo’ from his new album with its driving bass, perfect for some powerful drivers.
